Responses of individual roots of the widely cultivated cactus Opuntia ficus-indica to salinity stress were evaluated using a split-root system. Three roots from a plant with at least 20 roots were isolated from the remainder of the root system and exposed to 0, 30 or 100 mol m-3 NaCl for up to 28 d. Cortical cells became shorter and lateral root development was substantially reduced as salinity increased. Compared with the control, the increase in dry weight for the isolated roots was reduced 40% by 30 mol m-3 NaCl and 93% by 100mol m-3 NaCl. The sodium content of roots increased only two-fold with increasing salinity. Respiration rates of roots exposed to 30 or 100 mol m-3 NaCl were higher than those of the control. Carbon accumulation in roots measured 2 d after exposing shoots to 14CO2 was not initially affected by 30 mol m-3 NaCl but was substantially reduced at 100 mol m-3 NaCl. Thus, roots exposed to short periods of moderate salinity stress maintained sufficient carbon sink strength for continued growth of the roots. Moreover, increased salinity led to decreased efficiency of carbon usage for the expansion of root surface area.  相似文献

A microscope mount was designed so that specimen temperaturescould be monitored and controlled without impairing phase contrastoptics and used to measure rates of protoplasmic streaming between0 and 25 ?C in trichome cells of Lycopersicon esculentum, Lycopersiconhirsutum, Citrullus vulgaris, Tradescantia albiflora, Digitalispurpurea, and Veronica persica. Between 10 and 20 ?C the rates of streaming varied from 2–6µm s–1 depending on the temperature, and differencesbetween the species were small. The temperature coefficientof streaming rates was found to increase as the temperaturewas lowered so that the plot of log rate against temperaturehad a steeper slope at the lower temperatures. The largest temperature cofficients were for the warmth-requiringL. esculentum (tomato) and C. vulgaris (water melon), and thesmallest for the temperate-zone plants V. persica (speedwell)and D. purpurea (foxglove). The changes in rate always occurredover a range of temperature; no ‘critical temperature’wasobserved below which streaming abruptly stopped and above whichit was active, although the amount of streaming as well as therate decreased as the lowest temperatures were approached. The temperatures experienced by the specimens during the experimentdid not affect the recovery of normal streaming rates betweenabout 10 and 20 ?C. In a population of a wild tomato, Lycopersicon hirsutum Humb.and Bonpl., collected from different altitudes in Peru and Ecuador,i.e. from locations of different environmental temperature, the rate of protoplasmic streaming at 5 ?C was greatest in thevarieties collected from the highest altitudes. The resultssuggest that streaming rates correlate with genetic adaptationto low temperature in the species examined.  相似文献

The female of a new species of Halticoptera is described from a single specimen from Britain, and the male and female of a second new species are described from material from Britain and Czechoslovakia. Halticop-terina triannulata is recorded from Britain for the first time.  相似文献

1. Predation‐exclusion experiments have highlighted that top‐down control is pervasive in terrestrial communities, but most of these experiments are simplistic in that they only excluded a single group of predators and the effect of removal was evaluated on a few species from the community. The main goal of our study was to experimentally establish the relative effects of ants and birds on the same arthropod assemblage of canopy trees. 2. We conducted 1‐year long manipulative experiments in an organic citrus grove intended to quantify the independent effects of bird and ant predators on the abundance of arthropods. Birds were excluded with plastic nets whereas ants were excluded with sticky barriers on the trunks. The sticky barrier also excluded other ground dwelling insects, like the European earwig Forficula auricularia L. 3. Both the exclusion of ants and birds affected the arthropod community of the citrus canopies, but the exclusion of ants was far more important than the exclusion of birds. Indeed, almost all groups of arthropods had higher abundance in ant‐excluded than in control trees, whereas only dermapterans were more abundant in bird‐excluded than in control trees. A more detailed analysis conducted on spiders also showed that the effect of ant exclusion was limited to a few families rather than being widespread over the entire diverse spectrum of spiders. 4. Our results suggest that the relative importance of vertebrate and invertebrate predators in regulating arthropod populations largely depends on the nature of the predator–prey system.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials in the mistletoe, Ileostylus micranthusgrowing outdoors decreased rapidly during the early part ofthe day but remained relatively steady in the early afternoondespite increases in atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (vpd).Minimum water potentials of the mistletoe were relatively constant. They were held at values lower than those of hosts when thelatter maintained high water potentials but approached or evenexceeded those of hosts when they developed low water potentials. In contrast, cut shoots of Ileostylus usually maintained higherwater contents and leaf water potentials than those of its hostswhen both were desiccated separately in the laboratory. Pressure-volumeanalyses indicated that Ileostylus had lower water potentialat full turgor, a lower water potential but higher relativewater content at turgor loss, and a higher bulk modulus of elasticitythan the following four hosts: the native Kunzea ericoides andCoprosmapropinqua, and the introduced Ribes sanguineum and Teline monspessulana.Water potential at turgor loss (tlp) was strongly correlatedwith the minimum field water potential of both mistletoes andhosts. When tlpof mistletoe and host is similar (as on Kunzeaand Ribes) field water potentials are also similar, but whentlpis lower in the mistletoe (as on Coprosma and Teline), thefield water potential of the mistletoe is lower than that ofits host. Consequently, I. micranthus is likely to be more frequenton hosts that maintain high field water potentials than on hoststhat develop low water potentials.
