1. New scientific concepts such as models of chaos, complex dynamics and non-linear interactions have the potential to contribute to an improved understanding of ecological patterns and processes. This paper discusses some of the known dynamics of phytoplankton, pelagic food chains and nutrient cycles in the light of some of these new concepts. The paper brings these new conceptual models together with data from a wide range of sources in an attempt to produce a synthesis of system behaviour which allows us to understand why some things are inherently more predictable than others. In particular it looks at the limnological management tools of empirical biomass models and biomanipulation and at the need for prediction of species composition. 2. The structures observed in ecosystems (nutrient pools, sizes, species, temporal/spatial patterns) show properties at a spectrum of scales, as do the processes (fluxes, grazing, competition). Both respond to a spectrum of external perturbations that may be climatologically or anthropogenically induced. Empirical biomass models work because of the annual averaging of pattern and process and because of some inherent properties of the functioning of pelagic ecosystems. Many aspects of ecosystem pattern and process vary in a regular way with trophic state. Examination of empirical data sets can lead to an improved understanding of system behaviour if questions are asked about why things happen the way they do. 3. Feedbacks between pattern, process and periodicity are seen to be an inherent property of the system. Understanding the fundamental dynamics of non-linear interactions in ecosystems may make it possible to exploit the external spectrum of environmental perturbations and to control system function. For example, by imposing external physical perturbations on pelagic systems it may be possible to manipulate the species composition of the phytoplankton community. Because of the complexity of possible interactions both ‘horizontally’ between species and ‘vertically’ within the food chain, any prediction of species composition will necessarily be probabilistic.  相似文献

Distribution and feeding of larval Chironomidae in a gravel-pit lake   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
SUMMARY. Replicated benthic samples were collected from a wet gravel-pit in the English Midlands at fortnightly intervals during 1978. The aggregation patterns of the four most numerous genera, Chironomus, Polypedilum, Procladius and Tanypus , were analysed by fitting the means and variances of replicated sampling units to Taylor's power law and Iwao's plot of mean crowding against mean density. Chironomus larvae were not aggregated; all other genera showed an increased aggregation with density. The Iwao plots indicated that Tanypus larvae tended to be aggregated at low as well as high densities. Gut contents were analysed in larvae of the above genera and also in Cryptochironomus larvae, to investigate the relationship between dispersion pattern and feeding. Chironomus and Polypedilum larvae fed mainly on detritus, Tanypus on algae, Procladius on algae and crustacea and Cryptochironomus on oligochaetes. The extent of overlap in feeding niche was measured by Levins' index and shown to be low in all except the pair feeding upon detritus. Differences in the feeding niche may partly account for the dispersion patterns of the genera investigated.  相似文献

1. We revisited bumble bee survey data collected by Pyke in 1974 (Pyke, Ecology, 63 , 555–573, 1982) to evaluate seasonal changes in abundances of bumble bees and their floral resources, diel patterns of bumble bee activity, and elevation effects on plant and bumble bee phenology. 2. Bumble bee abundance increased during summer as spring queens founded colonies that produced workers, followed by males and autumn queens. The number of plant species visited by bumble bees increased to a peak in midsummer, then declined. 3. The number of bumble bees recorded per person‐hour peaked later than the number of flowering plant species used by the bees. Few autumn queens were observed. 4. Despite species differences in emergence times of spring queens, there were no apparent phenological differences among species in worker abundances. 5. Because flowering commences later at higher elevation, abundances of workers and males are also shifted later; therefore elevational comparisons must be seasonally adjusted. 6. These analyses provide basic information about important pollinating insects, and permit future investigations of elevational shifts over time to be properly adjusted for phenological and elevation effects in survey data.  相似文献

We used mtDNA and isozyme analysis of a freshwater fish, Galaxias divergens (Osmeriformes: Galaxiidae), to test a hypothesis of drainage evolution in South Island, New Zealand. Geological evidence indicates that the presently north-flowing Kaituna River branch of the Pelorus River system once flowed south into the Wairau River system. The subsequent flow-reversal is thought to have resulted from Pleistocene subsidence in central New Zealand. mtDNA sequence data corroborated this geological hypothesis: rivers draining into Pelorus Sound were found to retain a genetic lineage of G. divergens that is otherwise restricted to the Wairau River system and adjacent coastal drainages (based on current sampling). Other sampled drainages in northern South Island and southern North Island were found to house lineages that were highly divergent from the Wairau–Pelorus clade. Isozyme data yielded groupings based on fixed differences that were largely congruent with mtDNA clades. Standard molecular calibrations suggest that vicariant isolation of Pelorus and Wairau systems (drainage reversal) occurred in the mid-Pleistocene rather than the late Pleistocene as suggested by geology. ABSTRACT. The expression of cysteine proteinases by metacyclic promastigotes of Leishmania mexicana was investigated using gelatin polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Two prominent bands were detected which distinguished metacyclics from multiplicative promastigotes, lacking detectable cysteine proteinase activity, and amastigotes, with a distinct banding pattern composed of multiple enzymes. A correlation between relative activity of the metacyclic-specific bands and the prevalence of metacyclics was found both during the growth cycle in vitro as metacyclogenesis occurred, and by comparison of stationary phase populations from consecutive subpassages in vitro. Irreversible inhibition of the metacyclic activities using N-benzyloxycarbonyl-phenylalanyl-alanyl diazomethane did not inhibit metacyclic to amastigote transformation in vitro. These activities provide a useful biochemical marker for the metacyclic promastigotes of L. mexicana .  相似文献

Abundances of honeyeaters, flowers and flying insects, the daily nectar-energy production per flower and the average size of flying insects were estimated every three weeks for circles of radius 20 m located in three heathland areas near Sydney. Seasonal fluctuations in honeyeater density showed no apparent relationship with seasonal fluctuations in nectar-energy productivity or in biomass of flying insects. Variation between circles in honeyeater density was also unrelated to spatial variation in energy productivity and insect biomass. The relatively low incidence of nectar-feeding and high incidence of flying exhibited by birds observed during troughs in nectar-energy production suggest that many of these birds are transient and that their density may consequently be unrelated to local conditions.  相似文献
