1. The species composition and spatial distribution of small insects (Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera) and arachnids (Araneae, Opiliones, and Pseudoscorpiones) were investigated in three indigenous, upland grasslands identified as the National Vegetation Classification Festuca–Agrostis–Galium typical subcommunity (code U4a), Festuca–Agrostis–Galium, Vaccinium–Deschampsia subcommunity (code U4e), and Nardus stricta species-poor sub-community (code U5a), on which grazing management was manipulated experimentally. 2. Two hypotheses were tested that predicted arthropod diversity in upland grasslands. The habitat heterogeneity hypothesis predicts that the species number and abundance of arthropods will have an asymptotic relationship with increasing numbers of plant species and greater structural heterogeneity in the vegetation. The symbiosis between patches hypothesis states that the species number and abundance of arthropods will express a unimodal relationship with the grain size of sward patches created by grazing. The sward patches must be large enough to be apparent to, and support populations of, arthropods, but small enough that interspersed tussocks provide shelter from weather and a deterrent to disturbance by grazers. 3. The hypotheses were tested by sampling arthropods from the geometrical patterns represented by the individual tussocks and intermediate sward components of three indigenous grasslands produced by different grazing treatments. Paired samples of arthropods were taken by motorized suction sampler, the first of the pair from the grazed sward and the second, the accumulated samples from the surrounding triad of tussocks (U4a and U5a grasslands) or hummocks (U4e grassland). The paired samples were taken from six randomly-selected locations across both replicates of each of the grazing treatments. 4. Arthropod species composition and abundance were compared between the paired sward and tussock samples and in turn with measures of the vertical and horizontal components of vegetation structure, i.e. the variance in vegetation height per unit area and the area covered by tussock compared with sward. 5. There were consistently more species and a greater abundance of arthropods associated with tussocks than with swards and the average species number and abundance for the combined pair of samples declined with increased grazing pressure. The relationship between vertical and horizontal components of vegetation structure and the species number and abundance of selected arthropods was asymptotic as opposed to unimodal, supporting the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis, rather than the symbiosis between patches hypothesis. 6. Small and relatively sedentary insects and arachnids are more sensitive to grazing intensity and species of grazer in these upland, indigenous grasslands than are larger Coleoptera and Araneae, which respond less directly to varied grazing management. The overall linear reduction of small herbivorous and predatory arthropods with increased grazing intensity was buffered in grasslands with substantial tussock patches.  相似文献

Water depth requirements, diet, feeding styles and diurnal activity patterns are described for waterbirds using two brackish water lagoon systems in coastal Ghana, the Songor and Keta Lagoons. We project the habitat and activity data on a guild structure defined on the basis of individual feeding style and the sensory mechanism used to detect food. A total of 3199 flocks containing 118,648 individuals of 36 different waterbird species were examined during October-November 1994. Feeding habitats varied from dry mudflats to wet mud and shallow water of not more than 20 cm. The depth of water selected by waterbirds for foraging (but not for roosting) was correlated with tarsus length. Foraging birds exhibited a wide range of feeding styles using visual and/or tactile means for detecting prey: pecking, probing, stabbing, sweeping and ploughing, sometimes feeding singly, communally or socially in loose or dense flocks. Prey items taken ranged from seeds of Widgeongrass Ruppia maritima to invertebrates (mainly polychaetes, molluscs and crabs) and fish, mainly juvenile Tilapia. The daytime was spent on two main activities, feeding and roosting, with a small fraction of the time (average of 10% for 25 species) spent on comfort activities. The waterbirds exhibited either a circadian (most waders, except Common Sandpipers Actitis hypoleucos and Turnstones Arenaria interpres) or a diurnal foraging activity pattern (herons and terns), with no purely nocturnal species. Some species fed throughout the day, others showed peak foraging at various times of the day. The proportion of time spent foraging was related to guild (highest in visual and tactile surfaceforaging waders) and was negatively correlated with the size of the species. We conclude that the observed patterns in the use of the 24-h day by waterbirds for foraging are not species specific but vary depending on conditions on the feeding grounds. Nocturnal foraging is a normal and a regular strategy used by waterbirds to obtain enough food to fulfill their energetic requirements, so that irrespective of the sensory mechanism used to detect prey and the conditions prevailing on the feeding grounds, waterbirds forage day and night as dictated by their energetic needs. Water depth appears to be the key environmental factor controlling the availability of food for the waterbirds in the Ghanaian lagoons.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question of how close mammalian teeth are to ideal functional forms. An 'ideal' form is a morphology predicted to be the best functional shape according to information of the relationships between shape and function. Deviations from an ideal form are likely to indicate the presence of developmental or genetic constraints on form. Model tools were constructed to conform to functional principles from engineering and dental studies. The final model shapes are very similar to several mammalian tooth forms (carnassial teeth and tribosphenic-like cusps), suggesting that these tooth forms very closely approach ideal functional forms. Further evidence that these tooth forms are close to ideal comes from the conservation over 140 million years, the independent derivation and/or the occurrence over a size range of several orders of magnitude of these basic tooth forms. One of the main functional shapes derived here is the 'protoconoid', a fundamental design for double-bladed tools that fits a large number of functional parameters. This shape occurs in tooth forms such as tribosphenic, dilambdodont and zalambdodont. This study extends our understanding of constraints on tooth shape in terms of geometry (how space influences tooth shape) and function (how teeth divide food).  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Field experiments were carried out in eastern Scotland in 1976-78 to test the ability of granular insecticides, applied to soil at planting, and of insecticide sprays applied to the foliage, to control aphids and spread of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) in potatoes. The three years provided contrasting opportunities for virus spread. In 1976, the main vector of PLRV, Myzus persicae, arrived in early June and multiplied rapidly in untreated plots, and PLRV spread extensively. In 1977, M. persicae arrived 4–6 wk later than in 1976 and most spread of PLRV, which was less than in 1976, occurred after the end of July. In 1978, few M. persicae were recorded but the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, arrived early and very large populations developed in untreated plots. However, little spread of PLRV occurred in 1978, supporting other evidence that M. euphorbiae is an inefficient vector of PLRV in field conditions. In each year, granular insecticides decreased PLRV spread to a quarter or less of that in control plots. Thiofanox gave somewhat better and longer-lasting control of aphid populations than disulfoton, especially of M. persicae, but did not give greater control of PLRV spread. Application of three (1976) or five (1977) sprays of demeton-S-methyl to plots treated with granular insecticides further improved the control of M. euphorbiae but had less or no effect on M. persicae, especially where organophosphorus resistant aphids (R1 strain) were found. These supplementary sprays of insecticide did not further improve the control of PLRV but, in 1978, four sprays of demephion or pirimicarb to plots not treated with granular insecticide decreased PLRV spread. These data, together with previous findings, indicate that the amount of virus spread depends on the date of arrival and rate of multiplication of M. persicae in relation to the timing and effectiveness of removal of PLRV sources in crops. It is concluded that in Scotland insecticide granules should be used routinely only in crops of the highest grade of seed potato. Their use for other grades need be considered only in years following mild winters, when aphids can be expected to enter crops earlier and in larger numbers.  相似文献

Soyabean, cowpea, and white clover, inoculated with effectiverhizobia, were grown singly with a standard mineral nutritionand light regime in controlled environments until seed maturation(in soyabean and cowpea) or late vegetative growth (white clover).Day/night temperature regimes were 23/18, 30/24, and 20/15 °Cin soyabean, cowpea, and white clover, respectively. The respiratorylosses of CO2 from the nodulated root systems were studied inrelation to the concurrent rate of fixation of atmospheric nitrogen.Despite differences in development, the effectiveness of thesymbioses, and the temperature of growth, all three legumesexhibited similar respiratory losses from nodulated roots perunit of nitrogen fixed. During intense nitrogen fixation, theaverage respiratory losses for the three legumes varied between6·3 and 6·8 mg C mg–1 N; within each species,the losses varied more widely at different stages of development.These respiratory burdens reflect the total cost to the plantof the nodule/nitrogen fixation syndrome including the subtendingroots. The results are discussed in relation to the respiratoryeffluxes from nodules and roots, and to biochemical investigationsof the costs of nitrogen fixation.  相似文献

The first flush of young canes of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) was removed at different dates in spring, using the contact herbicide dinoseb. In comparison with untreated plots, cane removal increased fruit yield, controlled excessive cane vigour, and improved the health status of vegetative canes in a plantation infested by raspberry cane midge (Resseliella theobaldi). At the end of the growing season vegetative canes on treated plots were shorter and thinner, and sustained less physical injury than those on untreated plots. Access to the fruit at harvest was also improved. Reduced competition between fruiting and vegetative canes increased yield in the year of treatment by an average of 35%. Yield was not affected by date of cane removal, but growth of replacement cane was reduced below optimum when first flush cane was removed after mid-May. The later the canes were removed, the less was the incidence of pest and diseases. Cankers and lobate vascular lesions (‘patches’) resulting, respectively, from the feeding of first and second generation midge larvae (with associated fungi) affected fewer canes in treated than in untreated plots. Significantly fewer live larvae of R. theobaldi were recovered in the following winter from soil in plots treated on or after 11 May than from untreated plots. The main effect of vigour control on R. theobaldi and midge blight was that replacement canes provided fewer egg-laying sites (natural splits) than did the first flush canes on untreated plots. The incidence of spreading vascular lesions (‘stripes’) attributed to Leptosphaeria coniothyrium infecting either physical wounds (cane blight) or midge feeding wounds (midge blight) was substantially less in treated than untreated plots. Cane botrytis (Botrytis cinerea) and spur blight (Didymella applanata) were also less common in treated plots. Interactions between vigour control and pest and disease incidence are discussed in relation to the efficient management of cv. Glen Clova in eastern Scotland.  相似文献

A quantitative analysis of the 14C-labelled assimilate suppliedby the expanded leaves on the primary shoot to growing leaves,stem, lateral shoots (branches or stolons) and roots in redand white clover was conducted during vegetative growth. Stem growth of the primary shoot was inhibited in both cloversand utilized no energy resources. The growing leaves at theprimary shoot apex of white clover imported 4 per cent of theshoot's assimilate compared with 10 per cent in red clover.At the basal end of the primary shoot, the tap root of whiteclover imported 16 per cent of the shoot's assimilate comparedwith 22 per cent in red clover. Branches in red clover and stolonsin white clover were by far the largest sinks for primary shootassimilate, importing 39 per cent and 63 per cent of the labelledassimilate, respectively. Analyses of the translocation of assimilate from individualprimary shoot leaves demonstrated that in both clovers olderleaves exported more of their assimilate to branches or stolons,whereas younger leaves exported more of their assimilate toroots, and possibly in white clover, to growing leaves at thetip of the shoot. Of the labelled assimilate exported to branchesor stolons, each primary shoot leaf exported preferentiallyto the branch or stolon in its own axil, but in addition exportedsubstantial quantities of assimilate to all other axillary shoots,particularly those arising from basal axils where the subtendingleaf had died.
