Effect of Source of Nitrogen on the Growth of Fiskeby Soya Bean: the Carbon Economy of Whole Plants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fiskeby V soya bean was grown from seed germination to seedmaturation with two contrasting patterns of nitrogen metabolism:either wholly dependent on dinitrogen fixation, or with an abundantsupply of nitrate nitrogen, but lacking root nodules. The carbonand nitrogen economies of the plants were assessed at frequentintervals by measurements of photosynthesis, shoot and rootrespiration, and organic and inorganic nitrogen contents. Plantsfixing atmospheric nitrogen assimilated only 2530 percent as much nitrogen as equivalent plants given nitrate nitrogen:c. 40 per cent of the nitrogen of nitrate plantswas assimilated after dinitrogen fixation had ceased in nodulatedplants. The rates of photosynthesis and respiration of the shootsof soya bean were not markedly affected by source of nitrogen;in contrast, the roots of nodulated plants respiredtwice as rapidly during intense dinitrogen fixation as thoseof nitrate plants. The magnitude of this respiratoryburden was calculated to increase the daily whole-plant respiratory loss of assimilate by 1015 per cent over thatof plants receiving abundant nitrate. It is concluded that nodulatedplants grew more slowly than nitrate plants inthese experiments for at least two reasons: firstly, the symbioticassociation fixed insufficient nitrogen for optimum growth and,secondly, the assimila tion of the nitrogen which was fixedin the root nodules was more energy-demanding in terms of assimilatethan that of plants which assimilated nitrogen by reducing nitratein their leaves. 相似文献

We separate the mating systems of odonates into two main groups: non-resource and resource-based systems. These two groups comprise five classes of mating system: encounter-limited mating, free female choice, resource-limitation, resource-control and female-control. These classes are consistent with previous classifications of odonate mating systems and with the overall classification of mating systems by Emlen & Oring (1977: Science, 797: 215–223). Whereas Emlen & Oring's classification of mating systems was concerned with differences in sexual selection between mating systems, our classification of odonate mating systems also addresses the influence of inter-and intra-sexual selection on males within a mating system. Predictions about such relationships are useful in multivariate analysis of odonate lifetime reproduction success. Among most odonate mating systems, much of the sexual selection on males results from male-male competition for access to mates. Sexual selection via female choice is relatively less important or operates indirectly through females' choices of times or places to mate. We place resource-control and resource-limitation at opposite ends of a resource-defence continuum and postulate female choice will have greater influence in mating systems that are more like a resource-limitation system and less influence in mating systems that are more like resource-control. Sexual selection is likely to be weak in species that resort to encounter-limited mating where longevity is likely to contribute strongly to variation in reproductive success. Females have limited opportunity to exercise choice among males in the female-control mating system and in this system selection is most likely to operate on male characters which contribute to their efficiency in searching for and capturing mates. Predictions about the differences in the intensity of sexual selection between different odonate mating systems should be made on the basis of the variation in the number of potential fertilizations per male or even per ejaculate, rather than the number of fertilizable females per male. SUMMARY. 1. The effects of predaceous stoneflies and endoparasilism by mermithid nematodes on the locomotory behaviour of individual mayflies were studied in the laboratory. The effects of predator- and parasite-induced changes in activity on predator encounter, attack and capture rates were also examined.
2. In response to predator presence non-parasitized mayflies decreased activity, while parasitized mayflies increased activity, in comparison to a control group. As a result, the faster-moving parasitized individuals encountered stonefly predators much more frequently. The frequency of attacks per encounter did not change.
3. In view of this and other studies, two predator-avoidance strategies based on mayfly locomotory and defensive capabilities are proposed: (a) Mayflies that are able effectively to flee a predator's attack and those able to employ a behavioural defence may decrease their mean velocity when a predator is detected, thereby reducing the likelihood of an encounter while allowing foraging to continue; (b) Slower-moving or otherwise defenceless mayflies may immediately move away from the area in which a predator is perceived in order to avoid an encounter.

Many facilities for growing plants at elevated atmospheric concentrations of CO2 ([CO2]) neglect the control of temperature, especially of the soil. Soil and root temperatures in conventional, free-standing pots often exceed those which would occur in the field at a given air temperature. A plant growth facility is described in which atmospheric CO2 can be maintained at different concentrations while soil and air temperatures mimic spatial and temporal patterns seen in the field. It consists of glasshouse-located chambers in which [CO2] is monitored by an infra-red gas analyser and maintained by injection of CO2 from a cylinder. Air is cooled by a heat exchange unit. Plants grow in soil in 1.2 m long containers that are surrounded by cooling coils and thermal insulation. Both [CO2] and temperature are controlled by customized software. Air temperature is programmed to follow a sine function of diurnal time. Soil temperature at a depth of 0.55 m is programmed to be constant. Temperature at 0.1 m depth varies as a damped, lagged function of air temperature; that at 1.0 m as a similar function of the 0.55 m temperature. [CO2] is maintained within 20 μmol mol?1 of target concentrations during daylight. A feature of the system is that plant material is labelled with a 13C enrichment different from that of carbon in soil organic matter. The operation of the system is illustrated with data collected in an experiment with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv Tonic) grown at ambient [CO2] and at [CO2] 350 μmol mol?1 greater than ambient. 相似文献

1. Periphytic diatoms are used as indicators of water quality because their ecological tolerances or preferences to environmental variables are thought to be predictable. However, much of the present autecological information for periphytic diatoms has been derived from studies conducted in the northern hemisphere. In this present study we used periphytic diatoms to determine the impacts of inorganic nutrient pollution in a tidal river system in the temperate latitudes of south‐east Australia. In so doing, we assess the suitability of the use of the ‘northern hemisphere’ ecological tolerance/preference data for periphytic diatoms. 2. Artificial substrates were used to collect periphytic diatoms at 35 sites, which were positioned along the riverbanks and the middle of the river at various distances upstream and downstream of the sewage outfall. The sampling design took into account tidal excursions and the observed sewage plume dynamics. Periphytic diatoms were collected during the austral winter month of August and the austral spring months of September and October. We deployed the artificial substrates for 4 weeks to allow the periphytic diatoms to recruit and colonise, before identifying and enumerating the assemblages. 3. Data analysis included two approaches: multivariate visualisations of combinations of environmental and biological data to investigate shifts in species structure of the periphytic diatom assemblage and multimetric indices based on ecological tolerance/preference data. 4. We found that the spatial patterns inferred from multivariate and multimetric analyses were consistent. Temporal variation in the composition of the periphytic diatom assemblage was greater than the spatial variation along horizontal sections of the river (in any one deployment) due mainly to shifts between winter and spring species. 5. Outfall effects were most apparent in winter, possibly because subsequent deployments were swamped by growth of spring periphytic diatoms. The outfall effects included a shift towards pollutant tolerant species and a reduction in the variability of the periphytic diatom assemblage across the river. 6. We conclude that the use of periphytic diatoms and associated ecological tolerance/preference data as a means of assessing impacts of point source inorganic nutrient pollution is effective. An understanding of river and sewage flow patterns is essential to the design of appropriate monitoring programmes and to the interpretation of results, especially as periphytic diatoms are sensitive to many environmental variables. 相似文献
