SUMMARY. 1. The factors influencing the seasonal and inter-annual variations in the numbers of Daphnia hyalina in Esthwaite Water between 1956 and 1972 are analysed. Esthwaite Water has always been eutrophic. but the phosphorus and nitrogen loadings to the lake increased significantly in the mid 1960s. 2. Qualitatively, the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations in the lake changed relatively little during the period of study. Quantitatively, however, eutrophic species of algae became more abundant and the numbers of Eudiaptomus declined as the numbers of Daphnia increased. 3. The seasonal dynamics of the Daphnia was governed partly by the seasonal temperature cycle, and partly by the periodicity of edible algae. The birth rate of the Daphnia was constrained by temperature from January to April and from October to December. At other times their rate of increase was governed by the relative abundance of edible and inedible algae. 4. Edible and inedible species of algae tended 10 appear in a recurring annual sequence. Diatoms such as Asterionella were abundant in the spring, the early summer phytoplankton was dominated by edible flagellates, but inedible algae such as Aphanizomenon and Microcystis become dominant later in the year. 5. Daphnia could only reproduce in late summer when there were periodic regrowths of edible algae. Such regrowths were most likely to occur when there had been some entrainment of deep nutrients by episodic wind mixing. Calm weather encouraged the growth of blue-green algae that effectively‘blocked’the development of the Daphnia for the remainder of the summer. 6. The factors that controlled the seasonal dynamics of the Daphnia also influenced the average number recorded in a particular year. The average number of Daphnia increased in the early sixties when Cryptomonas was abundant and decreased in the late sixties when blooms of Aphanizomenon appeared in mid summer. Detailed analyses showed that a similar increase in the numbers of Aphanizometion had occurred in the late fifties. The critical factor throughout was the prolonged period of calm resulting in stable stratification. 7. This ‘weather’ effect was highlighted by comparing de-trended timeseries of Daphnia and Aphanizometion numbers with a simple measure of thermocline stability. De-trending removed the superimposed effects of progressive enrichment and revealed a 10-year cycle of thermocline stability that matched the temperature cycle recently reported in Windermere, These cycles are related to the movement of weather systems in the Atlantic so could change if the pattern of atmospheric circulation is altered by global warming. 8. The possible effects of climate change on Daphnia dynamics are discussed in relation to the findings in Esthwaite Water.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The first known fossil slime mold with part of the plasmodium preserved, from Eocene-Oligocene amber of the northern Dominican Republic, is described here. We assign it to the myxomycetes on the basis of its cytoplasmic structure. The paleoecological and evolutionary importance of this fossil is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The Signature Series Symposium “Cellular Therapies for Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Disease Proven and Unproven Therapies—Promise, Facts and Fantasy” was held as a pre-meeting of the 26th International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) annual congress in Montreal, Canada, May 2, 2018. This was the first ISCT program that was entirely dedicated to the advancement of cell-based therapies for musculoskeletal diseases. Cellular therapies in musculoskeletal medicine are a source of great promise and opportunity. They are also the source of public controversy, confusion and misinformation. Patients, clinicians, scientists, industry and government share a commitment to clear communication and responsible development of the field. Therefore, this symposium convened thought leaders from around the world in a forum designed to catalyze communication and collaboration to bring the greatest possible innovation and value to patients with musculoskeletal conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The glycerophosphate oxidase (GPO), the unique terminal oxidase of bloodstream trypanosome (TAO), appears to be functionally similar to the alternative oxidases of some plants and higher fungi. Immunoblotting of mitochondrial proteins of bloodstream trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma brucei brucei with monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies to Sauromatum guttatum (voodoo lily) and Symplocarpus foetidus (skunk cabbage) alternative oxidases respectively revealed two proteins of about 33 kDa (p33) and 68 kDa (p68). These proteins are not present in procyclic trypomastigotes. Electrophoresis under rigorous denaturing conditions indicated p68 to be the dimer of p33. Indirect immunofluorescent studies of bloodstream and procyclic trypomastigotes with monoclonal antibody to plant alternative oxidase also showed the localization of 33 kDa protein in the mitochondria of the bloodstream trypomastigotes. The functional TAO activity could be solubilized efficiently from the mitochondrial membrane of the bloodstream trypomastigotes by 1% NP-40 or 10 mM lauryl maltoside. When fractionated by Superose 12 gel filtration chromatography, p33 was co-purified with the TAO enzymatic activity. The apparent molecular size of the active enzyme complex was found to be 160 kDa. Gradual disappearance of the 33 kDa protein and the TAO enzymatic activity were well correlated during in vitro differentiation of the bloodstream to procyclic trypomastigotes. This study implies that the net biosynthesis of p33, an essential subunit of TAO, is decreased during differentiation from bloodstream to procyclic trypomastigotes.  相似文献

Detyrosinated and acetylated α-tubulins represent a stable pool of tubulin typically associated with microtubules of the centrosome and primary cilium of eukaryotic cells. Although primary cilium—centrosome and centrosome—Golgi relationships have been identified independently, the precise structural relationship between the primary cilium and Golgi has yet to be specifically defined. Confocal immunohistochemistry was used to localize detyrosinated (ID5) and acetylated (6-11B-1) tubulin antibodies in primary cilia of chondrocytes and smooth muscle cells, and to demonstrate their relationship to the Golgi complex identified by complementary lectin staining with wheat germ agglutinin. The results demonstrate the distribution and inherent structural variation of primary cilia tubulins, and the anatomical interrelationship between the primary cilium, the Golgi apparatus and the nucleus. We suggest that these interrelationships may form part of a functional feedback mechanism which could facilitate the directed secretion of newly synthesized connective tissue macromolecules.  相似文献

A complete skeleton of a new scincomorph lizard from the Early Cretaceous deposits of Tepexi de Rodriguez is described. Tepexisaurus tepexii gen. et sp. nov. is the best preserved early scincomorph and the first known taxon that is morphologically primitive to scincoids and paramacellodid lizards. The presence of pointed ventral parietal downgrowths, the coronoid overlapped anteriorly and posteriorly by the dentary and surangular, a small medial flange on the retroarticular process, and weak zygosphene and zygantrum articulations suggest scincoid relationships, but the absence of ventral and dorsal osteoscutes place Tepexisaurus as sister-group of this taxon. It shares the presence of + 30 closely packed teeth with the poorly known Upper Jurassic genus Saurillus and Pseudosaurillus , but differences in the coronoid structure, Meckelian groove and jaw proportions indicate that both taxa are distinct. Similar to Tepexisaurus , the absence of osteoscutes in Saurillus, Pseudosaurillus and Saurillodon place these taxa in a more primitive position relative to other paramacellodids which should be included within Scincoidea. Thus, Paramacellodidae as previously defined is a paraphyletic assemblage. The late presence of a pre-scincoid lizard in the Albian deposits of Tlayua can be correlated with the presence of sphenodontians and the relictual nature of the basal squamate Huehuecuetzpalli mixtecus. It gives additional evidence to support the hypothesis that Tlayua was a refuge for terrestrial archaic forms during the Albian.  相似文献

The karyotype of the house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus , was examined in 282 specimens from 44 localities, in an effort to gain better understanding of the Robertsonian (Rb) variation known to exist in Greece. We consider that an Rb system exists in Peloponnisos, southern Greece, distributed in an area that is substantially larger than previously known. It consists of at least three Rb races with 2 n  = 30, 2 n  = 24 and 2 n  = 28, respectively, the last being reported for the first time in this paper and carrying Rb(3.6), Rb(8.12), Rb(10.14), Rb(13.15), Rb(9.16) and Rb(11.17) in a homozygous state. Additional instances of variation in this Rb system include individuals with 2 n  = 31 and 32 of variable Rb constitution and hybrids between the Rb races with 2 n  = 30 and 2 n  = 24. In southern Peloponnisos, Rb(10.14) was found in either a homozygous or a heterozygous state (2 n  = 38 or 39). The relationships among the Rb populations of Peloponnisos are discussed and hypotheses for their evolution are proposed. Rb variation was also recorded in two new locations of eastern Sterea Ellas (2 n  = 28 and 29) and one in Ipiros, north-west Greece (2 n  = 38). These findings corroborate the existence of two separate Rb systems in those two areas. Moreover, among a number of islands surveyed, Rb variation was only found in Kythira island, with Rb(10.14) in a heterozygous state (2 n  = 39). Allozyme electrophoresis was used to study genetic diversityamong populations of the freshwater, hermaphroditic snail Biomphalariacamerunensis in Cameroon. Five of 19 loci studied in 15 enzymesystems were polymorphic. Intrapopulation variation was evidentin 8 of 12 populations sampled and heterozygotes were presentin 6 of these. Two populations with large sampled sets werepanmictic. Although results for the remaining 4 populationswith heterozygotes present were inconclusive, our findings supportthe hypothesis that Biomphalaria are out-breeders. The allelesfor two loci, asparate aminotransferase-1 (AAT-1) and 6-phosphogluconatedehydrogenase (6-PGD), showed distribution patterns that suggestthey may be limited by climate or habitat. The slow migratingAAT-1 was the only allele found in the mountainous regions ofthe southwest. This region falls under the Cameroon-type climateand is the wettest region in the country. The faster allelewas restricted to the lowland rain forest of the south. For6-PGD the fast allele was found throughout the range of B. camerunensis,but the slower allele was found only in the mountainous regionswithin the Cameroon-type climate.
