SYNOPSIS. Severed distal stumps of nerve axons have now beenreported to survive for months to years in both vertebrate andinvertebrate nervous systems While low (>15°C) temperaturesmay increase survival times in some preparations such as unmyelinatedgarfish olfactory axons, temperature between 15 and 25°Cis not the only significant factor determining the time courseof survival in goldfish Mauthner axons and for many invertebrateaxons For example when different axons in a crayfish are allstudied at the same temperature, long term survival differsin different axons In some cases these differences appear tobe due to differences in the nature of the ghal reaction orthe presence of synaptic contacts. The possible cellular mechanisms for long term survival fallinto three general cate gories slow degradation of axonal proteinsde novo axoplasmic protein synthesis, and transfer of proteinsfrom adjacent cells to severed axonal stumps In crayfish andsquid giant axons, there is evidence that proteins are indeedtransferred intact from glia to axons or from axon to axon,possibly via exocytotic/endocytotic processes However cellularmechanisms for long term survival may well differ in differentaxons of the same organism, much less between axons in organismsfrom different phyla In particular the ghal sheaths of myehnatedvertebrate axons which demonstrate long term survival mightbe expected to impede ghal/axonal or axonal/axonal protein transfer. The study of long term survival of severed distal stumps isimportant for studies of axonal regeneration because axons inorganisms having long survival times often show functional reconnectionmuch more rapidly and with higher specificity than do axonsin organisms lacking long survival times The study of long termsurvival is also important to cell biologists for an understandingof the molecular mechanisms which allow a piece of cytoplasmseparated from direct cytoplasmic contact with any nucleus toremain morphologically intact and functionally competent formonths to years.  相似文献

Archaeological and molecular data have revealed that the present day faunas of many island groups in Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia are not representative of the biodiversity generated within this region on an evolutionary timescale. Erroneous inferences regarding the mechanisms of speciation and the significance of long distance dispersal in shaping the present diversity of these island systems have resulted from this incomplete diversity and distributional data. The lizard fauna east of Samoa has been suggested to derive entirely from human‐mediated introductions, a distribution congruent with biogeographic patterns for other Pacific species. Distinguishing between introduced populations and those that result from natural colonization events is difficult, although molecular data provide a useful means for elucidating population history and identifying the likely sources of introductions. We use molecular data (1726 bp of mitochondrial DNA and 286 bp of nuclear DNA) to evaluate a population of arboreal lizards from the Cook Islands and to determine whether this arboreal skink population is the sole endemic component of the lizard fauna east of Samoa or the result of human‐mediated introduction. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 318–328.  相似文献

The fossil Palaelophacmaea criola Donaldson, from the early Ordovician Stonehenge Formation of central Pennsylvania, was described as a patelliform gastropod. A reinterpretation of the type lot and study of a few additional specimens provide the basis for an alternative placement. Palaelophacmaea is here assigned to the Hydrozoa, as a possible chondrophore. It has an exceptionally thin shell or test and concentric but irregular corrugations. Cambrian univalve genera having a more or less circular outline that are currently assigned to the Gastropoda or Monoplacophora should be reexamined to see whether they have the features of fossil chondrophore coelenterates rather than those of molluscs. The late Cambrian Palaeoacmaea Hall & Whitfield is removed from the monoplacophoran Mollusca and left unassigned as to phylum. We judge that at least some early Cambrian species of Scenella are probably coelenterate remains. * Early Ordovician , Palaelophacmaea, Gastropoda, Monoplacophora, Hydrozoa .  相似文献

Karyotypes and G band patterns of Thryonomys gregorianus, Pedetes capensis and Hystrix cristata from Kenya are reported. Both Thryonomys and Pedetes have a diploid number of 40 but differ in the overall pattern of their karyotypes and by the presence of a marker chromosome in Thryonomys. The marker chromosome unites Thryonomys with the ctenodactylids. The karyotype of Hystrix cristata , with a diploid number of 60, bears some resemblance to the African bathyergids and Petromus but none to the erethizontids. The African hystricomorph-hystricognath rodents, with the exception of Pedetes , bear more resemblance to the South American caviomorphs than to any other group of rodents.  相似文献

We report the first discovery since the 1970s of a new extant family (Aenigmatineidae fam.n. ) of homoneurous moths, based on the small Aenigmatinea glatzella sp.n . from Kangaroo Island off southern Australia. It exhibits a combination of extraordinary anatomical characters, and, unlike most homoneurous moths, its larva is a conifer‐feeder (stem mining in Callitris, Cupressaceae). While the adult's mouthparts are strongly regressed, evidence from other morphological characters and from a Bayesian analysis of 25 genetic loci convincingly places the taxon among Glossata (‘tongue moths’). An unexpected tongue moth clade including Acanthopteroctetidae and Neopseustidae, suggested with low support in recent molecular analyses, remarkably becomes strongly supported when Aenigmatinea is included in the molecular analysis; the new taxon becomes subordinated in that clade (as sister group to Neopseustidae) and the clade itself appears as the sister group of all Heteroneura, representing the vast majority of all Lepidoptera. Including Aenigmatinea into the analysis thereby strengthens the surprising indication of non‐monophyly of Myoglossata, and the new phylogeny requires an additional number of ad hoc assumptions of convergence/character reversals in early Lepidoptera evolution. Projecting future fire activity in Amazonia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fires are major disturbances for ecosystems in Amazonia. They affect vegetation succession, alter nutrients and carbon cycling, and modify the composition of the atmosphere. Fires in this region are strongly related to land‐use, land‐cover and climate conditions. Because these factors are all expected to change in the future, it is reasonable to expect that fire activity will also change. Models are needed to quantitatively estimate the magnitude of these potential changes. Here we present a new fire model developed by relating satellite information on fires to corresponding statistics on climate, land‐use and land‐cover. The model is first shown to reproduce the main contemporary large‐scale features of fire patterns in Amazonia. To estimate potential changes in fire activity in the future, we then applied the model to two alternative scenarios of development of the region. We find that in both scenarios, substantial changes in the frequency and spatial patterns of fires are expected unless steps are taken to mitigate fire activity.  相似文献
