Analysis of the haemolymph composition of the semi-terrestrial larva of the dragonfly, Uropetala carovei, yielded the following data. The osmotic pressure of the haemolymph is equivalent to 174.0 mM/1 solution of sodium chloride, the pH 8.2, sodium ion concentration 152.0 mM/1, potassium 4.6 mM/1, calcium 3.8 mM/1, magnesium 3.9 mM/1, bicarbonate 27.6 mM/1, and chloride 121.0 mM/1; total ninhydrin-positive substances 58.7 mM/1 (of which the major components are alanine, glycine, glutamic acid, and leucine); total carbohydrates 8.9 ± 0.4 μg/μl haemolymph (trehalose 7.88 μg/μl and glucose 0.85 μg/μl). Twelve protein bands were found, one of which showed alkaline phosphatase activity, three, acid phosphatase, and four, esterase activity. The significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

The colourful appearance of bird eggshells has long fascinated biologists and considerable research effort has focused on the structure and biochemistry of the avian eggshell matrix. The presence of tetrapyrrole pigments was identified nearly a century ago. Surprisingly, how the concentrations of avian eggshell pigments vary among related species, and whether this variability is associated with either eggshell appearance and/or species life‐history traits, remains poorly understood. We quantified the concentrations of the two key eggshell pigments, protoporphyrin IX and biliverdin, from a diverse sample of eggshells stored at the Natural History Museum, Tring, UK. We explicitly tested how these two pigments are associated with physical measures of eggshell coloration and whether the pigment concentrations and colour diversity co‐vary with phylogenetic affiliations among species. We also tested a series of comparative hypotheses regarding the association between the concentrations of the two pigments and specific life‐history and breeding ecology traits. Across species, the average concentrations of protoporphyrin and biliverdin were positively correlated, and both strongly co‐varied with phylogenetic relatedness. Controlling for phylogeny, protoporphyrin concentration was associated with a higher likelihood of cavity nesting and ground nesting, whereas biliverdin concentration was associated with a higher likelihood of non‐cavity nesting habit and bi‐parental provisioning. Although unlikely to be explained by a single function, the breeding ecology and life history‐dependence of eggshell pigment concentrations in these comparative analyses implies that related species share pigment strategies, and that those strategies relate to broad adaptive roles in the evolution of variation in avian eggshell coloration and its underlying mechanisms. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 657–672.  相似文献

Eighteen populations of Bemisia tabaci, collected from different geographic locations (North & Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe), were studied to identify and compare biological and genetic characteristics that can be used to differentiate biotypes. The morphology of the fourth instar/pupal stage and compound eye structures of adults were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and found to be typical of the species among all biotypes and populations studied. Setae and spines of B. tabaci larval scales from the same colony were highly variable depending on the host plant species or leaf surface characteristics. The location and the morphology of caudal setae, characteristic of all B. tabaci studied to date, were present in all colonies. However, differences in adult body lengths and in the ability to induce phy to toxic disorders in certain plant species were found between biotypes or populations. The recently identified “B” biotype, characterised by a diagnostic esterase banding pattern and by its ability to induce phytotoxic responses in squash, honeysuckle and nightshade was readily distinguished from non-“B” biotype populations. None of the non-“B” biotypes studied, were found to induce phytotoxic responses. Nine populations examined showed typical “B” biotype characteristics, regardless of country of origin. All tested populations, determined as “B” or “B”-like biotypes successfully mated with other “B” biotype colonies from different geographic areas. Non-“B” biotype colonies did not interbreed with other biotypes. The B. tabaci populations were tested for their ability to transmit 15 whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses (WTGs) from different geographic areas with a wide range of symptom types. All WTGs were transmitted by the “B” biotype colonies and by most non-“B” biotype colonies, with the exception of three viruses found in ornamental plants which were non-transmissible by any colony. Some non-“B” biotypes would not transmit certain geminiviruses and some geminiviruses were more efficiently transmitted than were others.  相似文献

  • 1 Adults of the noctuid moth Autographa gamma undertake seasonal migrations into areas where they are unable to breed continuously. Individuals migrate into Britain each spring, and offspring of these migrants probably return in autumn to over-wintering areas in North Africa and the Middle East. However, the existence of these return migrations has been questioned.
  • 2 Insects usually migrate during the adults' pre-reproductive period (PRP). The length of this period is therefore an index of migratory potential since individuals with longer PRPs have more time to express their potential for flight and to travel further before becoming sexually mature.
  • 3 Offspring of insects from Morocco, Britain and Germany showed that, under both long and short photoperiods, PRP increased with latitude over the range 34–53°N. There were significant genotype—environment interactions in the effect of photoperiod on length of PRP.
  • 4 However, PRPs of offspring from insects collected in Sweden were no different under a long photoperiod from those of offspring collected further south, and were significantly shorter under a short photoperiod than those of insects from Morocco.
  • 5 With the exception of Swedish moths, offspring from insects collected at higher latitudes had longer PRPs and, therefore, the potential to travel further during migrations. The ability of some individuals to respond to environmental cues signalling habitat deterioration will further increase their potential to return to over-wintering areas further south.

Abstract The pre-calling period (PCP), between emergence and first release of pheromone, determines the number of nights over which female Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) can express their migratory potential. In its seasonal migrations in eastern Asia, this armyworm penetrates to latitudes at which it is unable to over-winter but at which reliable photoperiodic and temperature cues anticipate the deterioration of conditions. The effect of these environmental factors on PCP was examined in moths descended from samples collected in Nanjing (32oN) during the summer migration. Under LD 14:10h, a reduction in temperature, from 23oC during larval development to 18oC from 24 h after pupation, resulted in a twofold increase in PCP compared with insects held at 23oC. At 23oC, short days (LD 12:12 h) extended PCP but the magnitude of the response was increased under a regime of decreasing photoperiod, from LD 15:9h, to LD 12:12 h through larval, pupal and adult development. Further experiments demonstrated that the response depended on a decrease in photoperiod from pre-pupal stage to adult emergence (the pupal period is spent below ground). A reduction of 50–60min over the 13–15 day pupal period at 23oC was effective. The significance of decreasing photoperiods, irrespective of absolute levels, as a cue for species whose migrations traverse substantial ranges of latitude is considered and the results are discussed in relation to the genetic determination of PCP in M.separata and to its seasonal migrations in eastern China.  相似文献

Chaenea teres has typical haptorid ultrastructure. The somatic monokinetid has two transverse microtubular ribbons, an overlapping postciliary microtubular ribbon, and a laterally directed kinetodesmal fiber. The evered cytopharynx forms a dome at the apical end of the cell. The base of the dome is surrounded by oral dikinetids. The left, anterior kinetosome of the oral pair is not ciliated and has a transverse microtubular ribbon, a nematodesmata and a single postciliary microtubule. The right, posterior kinetosome is ciliated and has only postciliary microtubules. The kinetosomes at the anterior ends of the somatic kinetics are close together and their transverse microtubules and nematodesmata contribute to the support of the cytopharynx. The transverse microtubules of these oralized somatic kinetosomes, together with those from the oral dikinetids, line the cytopharynx. Accessory or bulge microtubules arise perpendicular to the transverse microtubules. A dorsal brush of three kineties of clavate cilia is found on the cell surface just posterior to the oral region. Mucocysts and a single type of toxicyst are present. The toxicysts are confined to the oral region. There are multiple ovoid macronuclei that stain weakly. Micronuclei were not observed. Cladistic analysis indicates the Chaenea may be most closely related to Fuscheria and Acropisthium. The cladistic analysis also suggests that existing taxonomies of the subclass Haptoria need to be revised. We propose some modifications to Foissner & Foissner's classification that include transferring Helicoprorodon, Actinobolina, the buetschiliids, and the balantidiids to the order Haptorida and recognizing the close relationship between pleurostomes and spathidiids.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The Synhymeniida is characterized both by a band of somatic dikinetids, the synhymenium, extending across the surface of the cell and by a ventral cell mouth lacking specialized feeding cilia but subtended by a well-developed cyrtos. The synhymeniids have been hypothesized to be members of the class Nassophorea but our previous ultrastructural study of the synhymeniid genus Zosterodasys did not show any clear synapomorphies that would permit definitive placement in the Nassophorea or as a sister taxon to any of the other ciliate groups possessing a cyrtos. In the present study, simultaneous analysis of morphological and small subunit rDNA molecular data indicates that the Synhymeniida are sister to the class Phyllopharyngea and that this clade is, in turn, sister to the remaining Nassophorea, although this result is sensitive to dataset inclusion and alignment parameters. While this suggests that taxa with a ventral cyrtos might be united into a named taxon (e.g. resurrecting the Hypostomata), additional data are needed to reach a definitive conclusion.  相似文献
