Abstract Many current wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) harvest models assume density-independent population dynamics. We developed an alternative model incorporating both nonlinear density-dependence and stochastic density-independent effects on wild turkey populations. We examined model sensitivity to parameter changes in 5% increments and determined mean spring and fall harvests and their variability in the short term (3 yr) and long term (10 yr) from proportional harvesting under these conditions. In the long term, population growth rates were most sensitive to poult:female ratios and the form of density dependence. The nonlinear density-dependent effect produced a population that maximized yield at 40% carrying capacity. The model indicated that a spring or fall proportional harvest could be maximized for fall harvest rates between 0% and 13% of the population, assuming a 15% spring male harvest and 5% spring illegal female kill. Combined spring and fall harvests could be maximized at a 9% fall harvest, under the same assumptions. Variability in population growth and harvest rates increased uncertainty in spring and fall harvests and the probability of overharvesting annual yield, with growth rate variation having the strongest effect. Model simulations suggested fall harvest rates should be conservative (≤9%) for most management strategies.  相似文献

The work reported here compared cytokinin content and sensitivityin a selection of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivarsusing the following measurements: leaf cytokinins at three timepoints during light-growth and at four 24 h intervals afterlight-grown plants were transferred to darkness; sensitivityof root growth to direct applications of isopentenyl adenosine([9R]iP); and, sensitivity of germination and subsequent rootand shoot growth to 18 h imbibition of seeds in benzyladenine(BA). Accumulation of zeatin riboside-type cultivars was greatestduring light-growth in Tibet Dwarf, a wheat with an extremedwarf phenotype, intermediate in Omar standard and dwarf cultivars,and lowest in the standard and dwarf versions of Itana. Cytokininlevels were otherwise not directly correlated to plant staturein these wheats. There were no cultivar-associated qualitativedifferences in the types of cytokinins detected in this study.During the 16 h light period, the content of zeatin riboside-typecytokinins increased up to tenfold and then declined to basallevels during dark growth. Chlorophyll retention during dark-growthwas correlated with leaf cytokinin content. Data collected ata restricted number of sampling points during dark-growth suggesteda cyclic accumulation of [9R]iP-type cytokinins and the apparentcycle in Tibet Dwarf was offset by 24 h. Tibet Dwarf showedthe greatest root growth inhibition after exposure of seedlingroots to [9R]iP or imbibition of seeds in BA. Neither of thesetreatments affected shoot growth in any of the cultivars. The phytotoxic compound deoxyradicinin, a metabolite of Alternaria helianthi, was isolated from naturally infected leaves of sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The production of this toxin in liquid culture together with 3-epideoxyradicinol is discussed. Production of deoxyradicinin by liquid cultures was observed to decrease after successive sub-culture of the fungus on solid medium. All 10 accessions of Helianthus tested were sensitive to deoxyradicinin although some quantitative differences between lines were noted. Evidence is presented for the metabolism of deoxyradicinin by host leaf tissue.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among 20 nominal species of tropical lutjanine snappers (Lutjanidae) (12 from the western Atlantic, one from the eastern Pacific, and seven from the Indo‐Pacific) were inferred based on 2206 bp (712 variable, 614 parsimony informative) from three protein‐coding mitochondrial genes. Also included in the analysis were DNA sequences from two individuals, identified initially as Lutjanus apodus, which were sampled off the coast of Bahia State in Brazil (western Atlantic), and from three individuals labelled as ‘red snapper’ in the fish market in Puerto Armuelles, Panama (eastern Pacific). Bayesian posterior probabilities and maximum‐likelihood bootstrap percentages strongly supported monophyly of all lutjanines sampled and the hypothesis that western Atlantic lutjanines are derived from an Indo‐Pacific lutjanine lineage. The phylogenetic hypothesis also indicated that oceans where lutjanines are distributed (western Atlantic, eastern Pacific, and Indo‐Pacific) are not reciprocally monophyletic for the species distributed within them. There were three strongly supported clades that included all western Atlantic lutjanines: one included six species of Lutjanus from the western Atlantic, two species of Lutjanus from the eastern Pacific, and the monotypic genera Rhomboplites and Ocyurus (western Atlantic); one that included three, probably four, species of Lutjanus in the western Atlantic; and one that included Lutjanus cyanopterus (western Atlantic), an unknown species of Lutjanus from the eastern Pacific, and three species of Lutjanus from the Indo‐Pacific. Molecular‐clock calibrations supported an early Miocene diversification of an Indo‐Pacific lutjanine lineage that dispersed into the western Atlantic via the Panamanian Gateway. Divergent evolution among these lutjanines appears to have occurred both by vicariant and ecological speciation: the former following significant geographic or geological events, including both shoaling and closure of the Panamanian Gateway and tectonic upheavals, whereas the latter occurred via phenotypic diversification inferred to indicate adaptation to life in different habitats. Taxonomic revision of western Atlantic lutjanines appears warranted in that monotypic Ocyurus and Rhomboplites should be subsumed within the genus Lutjanus. We isolated 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the giant Australian cuttlefish, Sepia apama, from a genomic library enriched for (AAC)n and (AAAG)n repetitive elements. In the nine loci that reliably amplified, the number of alleles ranged from four to 12 per locus with observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.343 to 0.926. These and a previously developed set of six loci will be useful for analysis of genetic structure of populations and determining input to a massive seasonal breeding aggregation in northern Spencer Gulf, Australia.  相似文献

Temporal patterns of grazer-periphyton interactions in laboratory streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
SUMMARY. 1. The snail Juga silicuta (500 m?2) and the caddisfly Dicosmoecus gilvipes (50 m?2) were introduced into separate laboratory streams on days 1, 9, 16 and 28 of algal development. The mayfly Baetis spp. (500 m?2) was introduced on days 1 and 16, and two streams did not receive grazers. We assessed the interaction between succession in the pcriphyton, herbivore type and time of encounter in a 40-day experiment. 2. In ungrazed streams, the chlorophyte Scenedesmus obliquus was the most abundant early colonizer. The relative abundance of diatoms increased after day 9, and at day 40 the algal assemblage consisted of a thick mat of diatoms and S. obliquus with an overstorey of filaments of the chlorophyte Stigeoclonium tenue. In general, introductions of grazers at any stage altered this pattern by removing biomass, accelerating the replacement of S. obliquus by diatoms, and suppressing the growth of filaments. Grazing also reduced the relative abundance of the larger diatom Nitzschia oregona but increased the relative abundance of the smaller adnate diatoms Nitzschia frustulum var. perpusilla and Navicula minima. 3. Dicosmoecus decreased algal biomass and altered successional trajectories to a greater degree than either Juga or Baetis. Dicosmoecus rapidly grazed the entire substrate, whereas Juga and Baetis only cleared patches in the assemblages. Little alteration in algal development was observed in the Baetis streams after day 16, probably because (he periphyton assemblages attained a size and structure that prevented effective grazing by Baetis. 4. The patchy grazing patterns of Juga and Baetis resulted in more diverse algal assemblages than either the Dicosmoecus grazed or ungrazed streams. In natural streams, the temporal and spatial pattern of grazing relative to the developmental stage of the periphyton may contribute to maintaining a mosaic of algal patches in different serai stages.  相似文献

Hybridization is an important cause of abrupt speciation. Hybrid speciation without a change in ploidy (homoploid hybrid speciation) is well-established in plants but has also been reported in animals and fungi. A notable example of recent homoploid hybrid speciation is Senecio squalidus (Oxford ragwort), which originated in the UK in the 18th Century following introduction of hybrid material from a hybrid zone between S. chrysanthemifolius and S. aethnensis on Mount Etna, Sicily. To investigate genetic divergence between these taxa, we used complementary DNA microarrays to compare patterns of floral gene expression. These analyses revealed major differences in gene expression between the parent species and wild and resynthesized S. squalidus . Comparisons of gene expression between S. aethnensis , S. chrysanthemifolius and natural S. squalidus identified genes potentially involved in local environmental adaptation. The analysis also revealed non-additive patterns of gene expression in the hybrid relative to its progenitors. These expression changes were more dramatic and widespread in resynthesized hybrids than in natural S. squalidus , suggesting that a unique expression pattern may have been fixed during the allopatric divergence of British S. squalidus . We speculate that hybridization-induced gene-expression change may provide an immediate source of novel phenotypic variation upon which selection can act to facilitate homoploid hybrid speciation in plants.  相似文献
