Djinga is a monotypic genus restricted to the Cameroon Ridge (‘Dorsale Camerounaise’) of NW Cameroon. Besides the type locality Mount Djinga (Adamawa Province, near Tignère), it also grows in waterfalls near Mount Oku (NW Province). This paper describes the structure and development of Djinga felicis using scanning electron microscopy and microtome sections. Cusset's protologue is enriched considerably. Roots are green, dorsiventrally flattened and adherent to submerged rocks. They are broad ribbons or crusts (up to 1 cm broad) which branch exogenously. Root‐borne shoots (up to 17 cm) have filamentous leaves with sheaths and (occasionally) attached stipules. Flowers are borne as part of reproductive short shoots which arise exogenously along the stems and endogenously along the roots. Djinga shows non‐axillary stem branching. Reproductive shoots along the main stem usually stay short. They arise from the abaxial side of double‐sheathed leaves, a key innovation of Podostemoideae. These short shoots shift into pocket‐like stem positions clearly below their associated leaves. Each flower bud inside a spathella is erect, but with an inclined ovary. The flowers are unistaminate with a broad connective. Unlike many other Podostemoideae, the tricolpate pollen grains are arranged in both dyads and monads. The ovary is globular and unilocular. We investigated whether domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) influenced the use of space by chilla foxes (Lycalopex griseus) in southern Chile and tested the hypothesis that dogs interfere with chillas. We used scent stations and occurrence of scats within systematically placed plots to assess habitat use by both species and to test whether dogs were associated to the use of space by chillas. Activity data were obtained from captures for both species, and telemetry for foxes. Diet of both species was analysed in order to tease out the potential existence of exploitation competition. We found that, when active, chillas used prairies more and native forest less than expected according to availability, whereas inactive chillas (during the day) preferred native forest, the only habitat type that dogs did not use. The odds of dog occurrence increased at shorter distance to human houses, whereas the inverse pattern was observed for chillas. Poisson models showed that the number of chilla visits to scent stations was negatively correlated with the number of dog visits. We observed dogs persecuting and/or killing chillas which was also corroborated by local people that used dogs to prevent chilla‐related poultry losses, supporting the idea that dogs harass foxes actively. The analysis of scats showed that dogs fed mainly on house food and domestic ruminant carcasses whereas foxes fed on hare, hens, mice and wild birds, thus suggesting that exploitation competition is not a strong alternative hypothesis as a proximate cause for the patterns observed. We conclude that dogs seem to constrain the use of space by wild carnivores via interference.  相似文献

Opening of Cassia fasciculata leaflets was induced in darknessafter application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). This movementwas obtained with concentrations from 10–6 M to 10–4M, after a corresponding time-lag ranging from 120 to 30 min.IAA (5x10–5 M) allowed leaflet opening at all the pH valuestested (from 3·5 to 7·5), the largest aperturebeing obtained at pH 60 in MES 2·5 mM. Our data suggesta functional involvement of calcium in the regulation of theturgor variations occurring in the pulvinar motor cells duringIAA-induced leaflet opening which occurs in darkness: indeed,this movement was inhibited by the Ca2+ chelator EGTA (thisinhibition was reversed by CaCl2) or by antagonists (LaCl3,TMB-8); on the contrary, the IAA-opening was enhanced by ionophoreA 23187. Calcium mobilization through specific channels was tested usingantagonists such as verapamil and nifedipine: at physiologicaldoses, these compounds did not significantly affect leafletresponse. The possibility that calcium could originate frominternal stores was checked using lithium chloride which isknown to block the phosphatidylinositol cycle in animal cells.This compound hindered auxin-induced opening for concentrationshigher than 5x10–4 M. The calcium-binding protein calmodulinwas shown to be implicated in the IAA-induced response sinceopening was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner aftertreatment with compound 48/80 and with W-7. The high mountain plant species Ranunculus glacialis has a low antioxidative scavenging capacity and a low activity of thermal dissipation of excess light energy despite its growth under conditions of frequent light and cold stress. In order to examine whether this species is protected from over-reduction by matching photosystem II (PSII) electron transport (ETR) and carbon assimilation, both were analysed simultaneously at various temperatures and light intensities using infrared gas absorption coupled with chlorophyll fluorescence. ETR exceeded electron consumption by carbon assimilation at higher light intensities and at all temperatures tested, necessitating alternative electron sinks. As photorespiration might consume the majority of excess electrons, photorespiration was inhibited by either high internal leaf CO2 molar ratio (Ci), low oxygen partial pressure (0.5% oxygen), or both. At 0.5% oxygen ETR was significantly lower than at 21% oxygen. At 21% oxygen, however, ETR still exceeded carbon assimilation at high Ci, suggesting that excess electrons are transferred to another oxygen consuming reaction when photorespiration is blocked. Nevertheless, photorespiration does contribute to electron consumption. While the activity of the water –water cycle to electron consumption is not known in leaves of R. glacialis, indirect evidence such as the high sensitivity to oxidative stress and the low initial NADP-malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH) activity suggests only a minor contribution as an alternative electron sink. Alternatively, the plastid terminal oxidase (PTOX) may transfer excess electrons to oxygen. This enzyme is highly abundant in R. glacialis leaves and exceeds the PTOX content of every other plant species so far examined, including those of transgenic tomato leaves overexpressing the PTOX protein. Finally, PTOX contents strongly declined during deacclimation of R. glacialis plants, suggesting their important role in photoprotection. Ranunculus glacialis is the first reported plant species with such a high PTOX protein content.  相似文献

Abstract. It has been shown that atmospheric O2 can either depress or stimulate the rate of apparent photosynthesis of white mustard depending on the environmental conditions: CO2 concentration, light intensity and temperature. Stimulation by O2 was observed only under high photon fluence rate and at high CO2 concentrations. The critical CO2 concentration below which O2 was inhibiting and above which it was stimulating was dependent on the temperature of the assay: for plants grown at 12°C the critical CO2 concentration was 13.35 mmol at 5° C and 21.92 mmol at 10° C. Stimulation by O2 depended also on the growth temperature: for measurements at 26.31 mmol m?3 CO2, O2 was stimulating at temperatures less than 12°C for plants grown at 12°C and less than 19°C for plants grown at 27°C. The efficiency of the O2-dependent stimulation of net photosynthesis was maximum at 9.21 mol m?3 O2 at 26.31 mmol m?3 CO2. Oxygen-stimulation of net photosynthesis was detected in Nicotiana tabacum L. var Samsun, Lycopersicum esculentum L. and Chenopodium album L. At 5°C and under high photon fluence rate, O2 increased the carboxylation capacity of the photosynthetic apparatus of mustard and decreased its affinity for CO2. The O2 inhibition of the net CO2 uptake observed at low CO2 concentrations was the result of a decrease in the affinity for carbon dioxide. The nature of the mechanism which causes the stimulation of photosynthesis is discussed.  相似文献

Maddenia (Rosaceae) has been distinguished from Prunus on the basis of its tepaloid perianth and one‐ to two‐carpellate gynoecium. These distinctive morphological traits nonetheless overlap with several Prunus spp. Maddenia has previously been shown to be nested within Prunus, more specifically within a clade containing members of subgenera Laurocerasus and Padus, but its phylogenetic position within that clade has not been defined precisely. This study clarifies the position of Maddenia within Prunus through phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid ndhF sequences, with an expanded sampling of tropical species of subgenus Laurocerasus and the inclusion of three Maddenia spp. The monophyly of Maddenia is supported by both the ITS and ndhF analyses, but both datasets support the inclusion of Maddenia in Prunus. All trees from the ITS analysis and some trees from the ndhF analysis also support a close alliance of Maddenia with a clade comprising temperate species of subgenera Laurocerasus and Padus. On the basis of these results, all recognized species of Maddenia are herein formally transferred to Prunus, which requires four new combinations and one new name: Prunus fujianensis (Y.T.Chang) J.Wen, comb. nov. ; Prunus himalayana J.Wen, nom. nov. ; Prunus hypoleuca (Koehne) J.Wen, comb. nov. ; Prunus hypoxantha (Koehne) J.Wen, comb. nov. ; and Prunus incisoserrata (T.T.Yü & T.C.Ku) J.Wen, comb. nov. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 236–245.  相似文献

The study of the genetic variation of early height growth traits in seedlings helps to predict the possible outcomes of tree populations in the face of climate change. Second‐year height growth of 10 geographically marginal populations of Patagonian cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis (D. Don) Pic. Ser. et Bizzarri) (Cupressaceae) was characterized under greenhouse conditions. Variation among and within an average of 15 open‐pollinated families (comprising 21 seedlings per family) for each population was analysed for six size and timing traits obtained from fitted Boltzmann growth curves. The among‐family and among‐population variances were 4.03% and 2.74% of the total phenotypic variation, while the residual variance was 84.57% on average. Genetic differentiation among populations was low, except for the maximum growth rate (QST = 0.35) and for growth initiation (QST = 1). For most traits, genetic variation and heritability were variable across populations, except for growth initiation, which showed in general null intra‐population levels of genetic variance. Although no direct associations were found between the additive genetic variation and latitude or altitude, the north range of the distribution was more variable for the pool of the analysed traits. Although most extreme‐marginal populations of A. chilensis would be very limited in their ability to evolve if climate in north‐west Patagonia turns drier and warmer, their long‐term persistence could largely rely on a phenotypic diversification strategy.  相似文献

The bee genus Parapsaenythia Friese (Apidae, Protandrenini) is restricted to South America and characterized by the strongly punctate integument and hairy eyes. In the present work, the species of Parapsaenythia are revised, with seven species recognized, of which three are described as new: P. carinulata sp.n. (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay), P. inornata Moure (Brazil), P. lanata sp.n. (Brazil), P. paspali (Schrottky) (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay), P. puncticutis (Vachal) (Argentina, Bolivia), P. scutellaris sp.n. (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay) and P. serripes (Ducke) (Argentina, Brazil). Lectotypes are designated for Psaenythia (Parapsaenythia) argentina Friese, Anthrenoides paspali Schrottky and Parapsaenythia paraguayae Brèthes. Floral records, distribution maps, illustrations and an identification key are provided. The cladistic analysis of 11 terminal species (all species of Parapsaenythia plus four outgroup species), based on 45 characters of external morphology and male terminalia, produced a single most parsimonious tree. Parapsaenythia was recovered as monophyletic, with the relationships among its species as follows: (P. inornata (P. carinulata sp.n. (P. lanata sp.n. (P. scutellaris sp.n. (P. serripes, P. paspali, P. puncticutis))))). Based on these relationships plus the available distributional data, a cladistic biogeographic analysis was performed, and area cladograms for the Chacoan subregion are presented and discussed.  相似文献
