Nectaries and reproductive biology of Croton sarcopetalus (Euphorbiaceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Flower morphology, nectary structure, nectar chemical composition, breeding system, floral visitors and pollination were analysed in Croton sarcopetalus , a diclinous-monoecious shrub from Argentina. Male flowers have five receptacular nectaries, with no special vascular bundles, that consist of a uniserial epidermis with stomata subtended by a secretory parenchyma. Female flowers bear two different types of nectaries: inner (IN) and outer (ON) floral nectaries. IN, five in all, are structurally similar to the nectaries of male flowers. The five ON are vascularized, stalked, and composed of secretory, column-shaped epidermal cells without stomata subtended by secretory and ground parenchyma. In addition, ON act as post-floral nectaries secreting nectar during fruit ripening. Extrafloral nectaries (EFN) are located on petioles, stipules and leaf margins. Petiolar EFN are patelliform, stalked and anatomically similar to the ON of the female flower. Nectar sampled from all nectary types is hexose dominant, except for the ON of the female flower at the post-floral stage that is sucrose dominant. The species is self-compatible, but geitonogamous fertilization is rarely possible because male and female flowers are not usually open at the same time in the same individual, i.e. there is temporal dioecism. Flowers are visited by 22 insect species, wasps being the most important group of pollinators. No significant differences were found in fruit and seed set between natural and hand pollinated flowers. This pattern indicates that fruit production in this species is not pollen/pollinator limited and is mediated by a wide array of pollinators.  相似文献

Tragopogon cazorlanum (Asteraceae: Lactuceae) is proposed as a new Spanish species with distribution restricted to the Baetic mountains (south-eastern Spain). Physical anthropology consists of two interdependent types of study: (1) the biological history of man and (2) general biological processes in man (such as mechanisms of evolution and growth). Popular interest may focus on the former, the fascinating story of the origin of man and of specific people, but the latter affords physical anthropology potential practical value in respect to medicine, dentistry, public health, and population policy. The study of general processes is the study of human beings in particular situations, not for what we can learn about these particular populations but for the sake of generalization about mankind anywhere in comparable situations. This is, of course, the purpose of experimental science in general, but in anthropology the method is usually comparative. Long ago the study of the growth of the two sexes and of children in different countries was started on a comparative basis as was the study of the so-called secular change in adult stature. By 1911 Franz Boas had compared the changes in stature and head form of children of several different immigrant groups in the United States. There have since been comparative studies of the amount and distribution of body fat (but not yet adequate comparative measurements of the relation of tissue components to diet and to diseases). Demographic patterns, inbreeding, outbreeding, and their effects are other general problems. The Human Adaptability Project of the International Biological Program promises studies of human response to heat, cold, altitude, and other conditions on a wide international basis. If supported, these could turn physical anthropology's search in a useful direction. The functional biology of people of even out-of-the-way communities will be compared with each other. These studies can yield general statements concerning human response to types of ecological situation including such sociocultural conditions as those of hunting-gathering tribes and urban slums.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships between the families of the infraorder Culicomorpha were investigated by using partial 28S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. All families traditionally placed in this infraorder were investigated and confirmed as clades. On the other hand, some of the morphological relationships between these families were found to be in disagreement with phylogenies based on molecular characters. Our results did not support the generally accepted division of the Culicomorpha into two superfamilies, the Culicoidea (Culicidae + Corethrellidae + Chaoboridae + Dixidae) and the Chironomoidea (Chironomidae + Ceratopogonidae + Simuliidae + Thaumaleidae). Precisely, if the sister-group relationship between Culicidae, Chaoboridae and Corethrellidae was clearly confirmed, the Dixidae, traditionally considered as closely related to these two families, were not placed close to them on our trees. On the other hand, strong evidence was found for grouping together the Simuliidae and the Thaumaleidae, in spite of the cytological and morphological differences between these two families. The position of the Ceratopogonidae was uncertain, and the Chironomidae appeared as a possible sister group to the rest of Culicomorpha. The phylogenetic positions of the groups characterized by feeding on vertebrate blood or insect haemolymph (the Culicidae, Chaoboridae, Ceratopogonidae and Simuliidae) suggest that haematophagy has appeared at least twice in the evolution of Culicomorpha.  相似文献

This paper examines invasion of grasslands on Cape York Peninsula, Australia, by Melaleuca viridiflora and other woody species, and the role of storm‐burning (lighting fires after the first wet season rains) in their maintenance. Trends in disturbance features, fuel characteristics, ground layer composition, and woody plants dynamics under combinations of withholding fire and storm‐burning over a 3‐year period were measured on 19 plots in three landscape settings. Population dynamics of M. viridiflora are described in detail and 20‐year population projections based on transition matrices under different fire regimes generated. Numerous M. viridiflora suckers occurred within the grass layer, increasing each year regardless of fire regime, and were rapidly recruited to the canopy in the absence of fire. Storm‐burning had little impact on fuel, ground layer or woody plant composition, but maintained open vegetation structure by substantially reducing recruitment of M. viridiflora suckers to the sapling layer, and by reducing the above‐grass‐layer abundance of several other invasive woody species. Population projections indicated that withholding fire for 20 years could cause a sevenfold increase of M. viridiflora density on Ti‐tree flats, and that annual to triennial storm‐burning should be effective at maintaining a stable open vegetation structure. These findings argue against vegetation thickening being an inevitable consequence of climate change. We conclude that a fire regime that includes regular storm‐burning can be effective for maintaining grasslands and grassy woodlands being invaded by M. viridiflora.  相似文献

Bud morphology, bud activity, and shoot growth dynamics were studied over 13 months in four species of Mediterranean subshrubs growing along an altitudinal gradient in north-east Spain. The species selected were representative of the main functional types of subshrubs that grow naturally along altitudinal gradients on Mediterranean mountains. All species bore naked buds as their renewal structures, but the degree of protection of the buds varied between species, increasing with altitude. The period of morphogenesis and the level of shoot pre-formation also varied along the gradient. The species growing at low altitude had partially neoformed shoots, longer shoot growth periods, and started morphogenesis earlier than those growing at high altitude. These differences may indicate different morphological and phenological adaptations of Mediterranean subshrubs in response to increased winter cold along the gradient. At low altitudes, brachyblast-bearing species with partially neoformed shoots may be favoured because of the plastic shoot growth these structures confer. However, as the climate becomes colder and more predictable, brachyblast-bearing species may be replaced by species without brachyblasts, with tightly protected buds and more constrained patterns of shoot development.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 527–539.  相似文献

Correlations in behavioural traits across time, situation and ecological context (i.e. ‘behavioural syndromes’ or ‘personality’) have been documented for a variety of behaviours, and in diverse taxa. Perhaps the most controversial inference from the behavioural syndromes literature is that correlated behaviour may act as an evolutionary constraint and evolutionary change in one’s behaviour may necessarily involve shifts in others. We test the two predictions of this hypothesis using comparative data from eighteen populations of the socially polymorphic spider, Anelosimus studiosus (Araneae, Theriidae). First, we ask whether geographically distant populations share a common syndrome. Second, we test whether population differences in behaviour are correlated similarly to within‐population trait correlations. Our results reveal that populations separated by as much as 36° latitude shared similar syndromes. Furthermore, population differences in behaviour were correlated in the same manner as within‐population trait correlations. That is, population divergence tended to be along the same axes as within‐population covariance. Together, these results suggest a lack of evolutionary independence in the syndrome’s constituent traits.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the leafhopper genus Apogonalia was conducted based on a matrix of 40 terminal taxa and 147 morphological characters. The analysis yielded 1391 equally most‐parsimonious trees, which do not support the monophyly of Apogonalia in the strict consensus. A successive weighting procedure yielded 62 trees in which the genus appeared as a monophyletic group. The strict consensus of these 62 trees is almost entirely dichotomous, showing only two polytomies. The test of phylogenetic integrity was applied for distinct variations of three species: A. germana, A. sanguinipes, and A. histrio. Only for the first species was the conjecture that its variations belong to the same entity corroborated. The best‐supported clade within Apogonalia, which has several synapomorphies and high branch support indices, comprises nine Antillean endemic species. This distributional pattern probably was originated by vicariance in the Late Cretaceous, when the Proto‐Antillean archipelago was pushed north‐eastward by the Caribbean Plate to become the modern Greater Antilles. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 163 , 548–570.  相似文献
