The evolution of visual processing and the construction of seeing systems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This paper is concerned with the evolution of visual mechanisms and the possibility of copying their principles at different levels of sophistication. It is an old question how the complex interaction between eye and brain evolved when each needs the other as a test-bed for successive improvements. I propose that the primitive mechanism for the separation of stationary objects relies on their relative movement against a background, normally caused by the animal's own movement. Apparently insects and many lower animals use little more than this for negotiating through a three-dimensional world, making adequate responses to individual objects which they 'see' without a cortical system or even without a large brain. In the development of higher animals such as birds or man, additional circuits store memories of the forms of objects that have been frequently inspected from all angles or handled. Simple visual systems, however, are tuned to a feature of the world by which objects separate themselves by movement relative to the eye. In making simple artificial visual systems which 'see', as distinct from merely projecting the image, it is more hopeful to copy the 'ambient' vision of lower animals than the cortical systems of birds or mammals.  相似文献

Oogenesis and oviposition can be inhibited in female of Rhodnius prolixus by means of short-term experiment (first reproductive cycle) of a single dose of ethoxyprecocene II given by ingestion. The inhibition is dose-dependent as measured by oocyte growth, egg maturation and egg deposition. In a long-term experiment (second and third reproductive cycles) egg production and oogenesis can be partially or totally re-established by subsequent blood meals without ethoxyprecocene II. These findings suggest that in female R. prolixus, damage caused to corpus allatum by ethoxyprecocene II, in certain cases, is not irreversible.  相似文献

Enterobacter cloacae attached to drinking water distribution particles was subjected to chlorination. Attachment resulted in the protection of these organisms from disinfection. This effect was found to be dependent upon both the level of chlorine in the system and attachment time. The results obtained in this study indicate that attached organisms may play an important role in coliform outbreaks.  相似文献

Crude extracts of filtrates of cultures of Fusarium sambucinum NRRL 13495 were acetylated or hydrolyzed. After chromatography on cartridge columns of silica gel and recrystallization three times from mixtures of ethyl acetate and hexane, 3,4,15-triacetoxyscirpenol (435 +/- 10 mg/liter of filtrate; mean +/- standard error [n = 3]) and the parent alcohol scirpentriol were isolated (261 +/- 29 mg/liter of filtrate; mean +/- standard error [n = 3]) in 68 and 53% yield for a 130- and 14-fold improvement, respectively, over prior reports.  相似文献

Simple and efficient chemical approaches to preparation of DNA probes carrying 2,4-dinitrophenyl, dansyl or biotin residues were developed. The residues were introduced using following DNA derivatization procedures: a) transamination of cytidine residues with O-(4-aminobutyl)hydroxylamine; b) mercuration of pyrimidine residues followed by beta-mercaptoethanol modification. It was shown that 2,4-dinitrophenyl-containing DNA probes can be used for nonradioactive hybridization detection of nucleic acids. DNP-DNA: DNA complexes were detected using mouse antibodies specific to 2,4-dinitrophenyl groups, which were developed with peroxidase-conjugated antimouse immunoglobulins. Peroxidase-catalyzed chemoluminescent reaction of luminol oxidation with hydrogen peroxide allowed to detect 10 picograms of the dinitrophenylated single-stranded DNA probe.  相似文献

Quantitative method is developed for evaluation interproton distances in peptides in solution. The method is based on the measurement of the relative intensities of the cross-peaks in the pure-phase absorption NOESY spectra. The ratios of the cross-peak intensities IN alpha/I alpha N and INN/I alpha N enable to determine the corresponding interproton distances dN alpha, d alpha N and dNN for several amino acid residues. These distances can be used to estimate other distances with cross-peaks in NOESY spectra. As example, the interproton distances are determined in a cyclic hexapeptide, namely cyclic analogue of substance P: cyclo [H-Glu-Phe-Phe-Gly-Leu-Met-NH(CH2)3-NH-]. The spatial structure of the molecule in dimethylsulphoxide solution is established.  相似文献

Summary A spore-free parasporal crystal suspension was prepared fromBacillus thuringiensis subsp.israelensis by an aqueous biphasic separation technique and the waste fractions quantified with regard to spore numbers and insecticidal potencies. The technique proved efficient in selectively removing spores from the spore-crystal mixture. The final crystal suspension was used to develop a novel bioassay system which allowed rapid determination of crystal effectiveness in 1/8 to 1/6 of the time required in the conventional mortality versus concentration bioassay.  相似文献

Ammonium regeneration by micro- (35–153 µm) andmacrozooplankton (> 153 µm) was determined in the Gulfof Maine by measuring the activity of the excretory enzyme glutamatedehydrogenase (GDH) in various size fractions. GDH maxima weregenerally observed to correspond to the depth of the chlorophyllmaximum as previously reported in the Gulf of Mexico and inthe vicinity of the Nantucket Shoals. GDH activity of the microzooplanktonwas considerably lower than the macrazooplankton, suggestingthe microzooplankton made only a minor contribution (1–11%) to the total ammonium regenerated. These results were confirmedby biomass estimates made from counts of individual species.Ammonium excretion by both zooplankton fractions was estimatedto supply 5–31 % of the nitrogen requirements for primaryproduction, with an estimated 59–63% supplied by the verticaltransport of nitrate (new nitrogen) into the euphoric zone.  相似文献
