Papillary projections along the anterolateral margin of the tongue were observed in fetal and young stages of the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba. Papillary projections appear in the prenatal period and attain maximum development in the early postnatal period. They almost disappear by weaning. Vestigial eminences remain at the corresponding region, but they completely disappear in the adult. The papillary projections observed differ markedly from the lingual papillae of the general mammalian tongue as they are temporary, localized at the anterolateral margin and large in size. The projections were also present in young individuals of some other dolphins. No taste buds could be seen on the projections in any of the stages of all specimens observed. Such projections may have important mechanical functions during suckling in these mammals. 相似文献

The fatty acid composition, the lipid digestibility and protein profile of Japanese-Saanen goat's milk were characterized. Caprine milk contained substantial quantities of C(4:0) to C(10:0) fatty acids as compared with Holstein cow's milk. The lipids of the former showed significantly higher digestibility in vitro by porcine lipase than those of the latter (P<0.05). As determined by SDS-PAGE, the respective contents of alpha(s1)-casein, one of the major allergens, were 3.9% and 33.7% in caprine and bovine milk. 相似文献

Background
While annexin A1 in nuclei is proposed to be involved in cell transformation, its functions remain poorly understood. Since annexin A1 has the consensus motif, 160LKRD, for SUMOylation as well as Ks, acceptors for ubiquitination that regulates localization and functions of proteins, we investigated SUMOylation and ubiquitination of annexin A1.Methods
SUMOylation and ubiquitination of bovine annexin A1 were biochemically tested in vitro by purified proteins, and were confirmed by cell experiments with L5178 lymphoma cells. Effects of the modifications on DNA helicase activity were measured by ssDNA binding activity and by dsDNA unwinding activity.Results
SUMOylation of annexin A1 was catalyzed by Ubc9, while its ubiquitination was by Rad6-Rad 18. Ubiquitinated annexin A1 had higher affinity for damaged DNA, and promoted in vitro translesion DNA synthesis by Pol β. In mouse lymphoma L5178Y tk(+/−) cells, levels of SUMOylated annexin A1 decreased by DNA damaging agents, MMS or As3+, whereas those of ubiquitinated annexin A1 increased under the same conditions.Conclusion
These observations suggest but do not necessarily prove that ubiquitinated annexin A1 in nuclei may be involved in DNA damage response, while SUMOylated annexin A1 functions in proliferation–differentiation.Significance

Females of the migrant skipper, Parnara guttata guttata, that are reared under lower temperatures lay smaller eggs. The adaptive significance of egg size plasticity in response to temperature is unknown in this species. We suggest, based on the following experimental results, that P. g. guttata uses temperature as an indirect cue to predict the host condition (leaf toughness) of the next generation. First, larvae were reared under the typical conditions of temperature and photoperiod experienced during the immature stages in the first, second, and overwintering (third) generations (LD 16:8 at 25°C, LD 14:10 at 25°C and LD 14:10 at 20°C). Females reared under LD14:10 at 20°C produced more, smaller eggs than those reared under LD14:10 and LD16:8 at 25°C. Secondly, survival rates of first instar larvae derived from females reared under the three photoperiod/temperature treatments were measured on young soft rice leaves (soft), or tough, old rice leaves (tough). Survival rates of hatchlings reared on soft and tough leaves did not differ when females were reared under LD16:8 and LD14:10 at 25°C. However, hatchling survival was significantly higher on soft than on tough leaves when females were reared under LD14:10 at 20°C. Thirdly, we found that egg size plasticity in response to temperature in P. g. guttata may be a threshold response. Temperatures below 20°C experienced during the immature stages may be effective for production of smaller and more eggs in the overwintering generation of P. g. guttata. 相似文献

The effects of difructose anhydride III (DFAIII) on stimulating calcium absorption was investigated in humans. We studied changes in the time-course of characteristics urinary calcium excretion in 12 healthy men given 0.3, 1.0 or 3.0 g of DFAIII and 300 mg of calcium as calcium carbonate. In addition, urinary excretion and urine concentrations of creatinine and deoxypyridinoline were determined. Urine calcium excretion every 2 hours after the intake were higher over than that of the control subjects. The total amount of urinary calcium excretion for 10 hours was significantly greates in the subjects given 1.0 g or 3.0 g of DFAIII than that of the control subjects. However, there were no differences in the urine concentrations of creatinine and deoxypyridinoline between the subjects given DFAIII and the control subjects. These findings suggests that low dose of DFAIII had a stimulating effect on calcium absorption in humans. 相似文献

Methyltransfer reactions are some of the most important reactions in biological systems. Glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) catalyzes the S-adenosyl-l-methionine- (SAM-) dependent methylation of glycine to form sarcosine. Unlike most SAM-dependent methyltransferases, GNMT has a relatively high value and is weakly inhibited by the product S-adenosyl-l-homocysteine (SAH). The major role of GNMT is believed to be the regulation of the cellular SAM/SAH ratio, which is thought to play a key role in SAM-dependent methyltransfer reactions. Crystal structures of GNMT complexed with SAM and acetate (a potent competitive inhibitor of Gly) and the R175K mutated enzyme complexed with SAM were determined at 2.8 and 3.0 A resolutions, respectively. With these crystal structures and the previously determined structures of substrate-free enzyme, a catalytic mechanism has been proposed. Structural changes occur in the transitions from the substrate-free to the binary complex and from the binary to the ternary complex. In the ternary complex stage, an alpha-helix in the N-terminus undergoes a major conformational change. As a result, the bound SAM is firmly connected to protein and a "Gly pocket" is created near the bound SAM. The second substrate Gly binds to Arg175 and is brought into the Gly pocket. Five hydrogen bonds connect the Gly in the proximity of the bound SAM and orient the lone pair orbital on the amino nitrogen (N) of Gly toward the donor methyl group (C(E)) of SAM. Thermal motion of the enzyme leads to a collision of the N and C(E) so that a S(N)2 methyltransfer reaction occurs. The proposed mechanism is supported by mutagenesis studies. 相似文献

Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) is the enzyme that catalyzes the last step of creatine biosynthesis. The enzyme is found in abundance in the livers of all vertebrates. Recombinant rat liver GAMT has been crystallized with S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), and the crystal structure has been determined at 2.5 A resolution. The 36 amino acid residues at the N terminus were cleaved during the purification and the truncated enzyme was crystallized. The truncated enzyme forms a dimer, and each subunit contains one SAH molecule in the active site. Arg220 of the partner subunit forms a pair of hydrogen bonds with Asp134 at the guanidinoacetate-binding site. On the basis of the crystal structure, site-directed mutagenesis on Asp134, and chemical modification and limited proteolysis studies, we propose a catalytic mechanism of this enzyme. The truncated GAMT dimer structure can be seen as a ternary complex of protein arginine methyltransferase (one subunit) complexed with a protein substrate (the partner subunit) and the product SAH. Twenty four reference strains (serotype a-h) belonging to the mutans group of streptococci were compared for DNA fragment patterns of rDNA after treatment with Hind III. It was shown that Streptococcus cricetus (serotype a), S. rattus (serotype b), and S. downei (serotype h) reveals comparatively homogeneous patterns while S. mutans (serotype c, e and f) exhibits differences between the different serotypes as well as within single serotypes. S. sobrinus had an intermediary diversity. These data support the previous findings that S. mutans is heterogeneous at the serological, biochemical and genetical level. 相似文献
