Summary Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is expected to increase plant productivity and alter plant/plant interactions, but little is known about its effects on symbiotic interactions with microorganisms. Interactions between perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne (a C3 plant), and purpletop grass, Tridens flavus (a C4 plant), and their clavicipitaceous fungal endophytes (Acremonium lolii and Balansia epichloe, respectively) were investigated by growing the grasses under 350 and 650 l l 1 CO2 at two nutrient levels. Infected and uninfected perennial ryegrass responded with increased growth to both CO2 enrichment and nutrient addition. Biomass and leaf area of infected and uninfected plants responded similarly to CO2 enrichment. When growth analysis parameters were calculated, there were significant increases in relative growth rate and net assimilation rate of infected plants compared to uninfected plants, although the differences remained constant across CO2 and nutrient treatments. Growth of purpletop grass did not increase with CO2 enrichment or nutrient addition and there were no significant differences between infected and uninfected plants. CO2 enrichment did not alter the interactions between these two host grasses and their endophytic-fungal symbionts.  相似文献

Summary Life-history parameters (growth, reproduction, and survival) were measured from one genetically heterogeneous and three homogeneous populations of tadpole shrimp (Triops longicaudatus) raised under three competitive levels: 5, 10, and 16 shrimp per 38-1 aquarium. Comparisons were made between the homogeneous populations (three monomorphic selfing lines) and a heterogeneous population (a mixture of the three lines) to test for increased productivity in genetically variable populations, a prediction of the tangled bank hypothesis for a short-term advantage to sexual reproduction. In most comparisons, the mixture of inbred lines performed better than expected from their individual performances in pure cultures but did not outperform the best performing line in any comparison. Decomposition of the mixed culture's performance into performances of the component inbred lines showed that not all lines experienced release from competition in the mixed culture. No genotype X environment interaction was found for any of the three fitness correlates, indicating that all three lines performed similarly under the three competitive conditions. These results provide little support for the tangled bank hypothesis and suggest that the levels of heterogeneity necessary for detectable resource partitioning in these shrimp may involve factors not considered in this study.  相似文献

Females from female-biased populations of the notostracan Triops newberryi produce viable eggs when reared in isolation. Clutches produced under such conditions exhibit sex-ratio polymorphism. One category of females (monogenics) produces only female offspring; the second category (amphigenics) produces clutches with a sex ratio of 3 females: 1 male. The relative proportions of the two categories of females varies significantly between populations and is correlated with population sex ratio. This correlation, and the pattern of offspring distribution in amphigenics, suggests that sex is determined by an autosomal Mendelian gene locus for which the male-determining allele is recessive. Limited pedigree analysis of lineages under selfing support the genetic model.  相似文献

The influence of relatively low concentrations of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on phase resetting of spontaneous activity of embryonic chick atrial heart cell aggregates by brief duration current pulses was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The maximal upstroke velocity, Vmax, of the spontaneous action potential was reduced by TTX in a concentration-dependent manner for [TTX] less than 10(-7) M. However, the beat rate was unaffected in this concentration range. Application of a depolarizing current pulse of brief duration during a critical region of the spontaneous cycle annihilated activity in some preparations exposed to [TTX] approximately 10(-7) M. These results were analyzed with the model of electrical activity described in the previous paper (Clay, J.R., R.M. Brochu, and A. Shrier. 1990. Biophys. J. 58:609-621) based on a tonic block of the INa channel by TTX with a dissociation constant, KD, of 50 nM.  相似文献

The influence of brief duration current pulses on the spontaneous electrical activity of embryonic chick atrial heart cell aggregates was investigated experimentally and theoretically. A pulse could either delay or advance the time of the action potential subsequent to the pulse depending upon the time in the control cycle at which it was applied. The perturbed cycle length throughout the transition from delay to advance was a continuous function of the time of the pulse for small pulse amplitudes, but was discontinuous for larger pulse amplitudes. Similar results were obtained using a model of the ionic currents which underlie spontaneous activity in these preparations. The primary ion current components which contribute to phase resetting are the fast inward sodium ion current, INa, and the primary, potassium ion repolarization current, IX1. The origin of the discontinuity in phase resetting of the model can be elucidated by a detailed examination of the current-voltage trajectories in the region of the phase response curve where the discontinuity occurs.  相似文献

At least two species of Amazonian sedges (piripiri, i.e., Cyperus articulatus andC. prolixus, Cyperaceae) are widely utilized for various medicinal purposes, including birth control and induction of labor, and in hallucinogenic preparations. Examination of herbarium specimens collected from throughout South America and of living specimens collected in Ecuador has revealed that plants are infected by the systemic, ascomycetous fungusBalansia cyperi. This fungus is classified in the Clavicipitaceae and is known to infect only six species ofCyperus, including both North and South American species. Pure cultures of the fungus were obtained from two species of piripiri from Ecuador andC. virens from southern USA, and grown in submerged liquid culture. Extracts of the liquid medium revealed several unidentified ergot alkaloids. Current and past pharmacological uses of ergot alkaloids are consistent with uses of piripiri, suggesting a fungal basis for the ethnobotanical utilization of piripiri in Amazonia.  相似文献

Excitatory amino acids have been implicated in the production of calcium mediated neuronal death following central nervous system ischemia. We have used microdialysis to investigate changes in the extracellular concentrations of amino acids in the spinal cord after aortic occlusion in the rabbit. Glutamate, aspartate, glutamine, asparagine, glycine, taurine, valine, and leucine were measured in the micordialysis perfusate by high pressure liquid chromatography. The concentrations of glutamate, glycine, and taurine were significantly higher during ischemia and reperfusion than controls. Delayed elevations in the concentrations of asparagine and valine were also detected. The elevation of glutamate is consistent with the hypothesis that excitotoxins may mediate neuronal damage in the ischemic spinal cord. Increased extracellular concentrations of asparagine and valine may reflect preferential use of amino acids for energy metabolism under ischemic conditions. The significance of increased concentrations of inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitters is unclear.  相似文献
