Illegal harvesting and trade are major forces behind population declines of wild slow lorises (genus Nycticebus). The impacts of the wildlife trade on individual slow lorises have not been as well described. In this article, we describe quantitatively the consequences of the wildlife trade for 77 greater slow lorises, N. coucang, who were confiscated en masse and brought to Cikananga Wildlife Center in Indonesia. Medical records indicated that in total, 28.6% of the slow lorises died within the first 6 months, mostly due to traumatic injury, and all the infants died. The greatest sources of morbidity were external wounds (33.1% of 166 total medical events) and dental problems (19.3%). Of the surviving individuals, 25.4% displayed abnormal behavior. Behavioral observations indicated that healthy adults (= 3) spent 48.2% of their active period performing stereotypies. These data illustrate the physical and behavioral impacts of the illegal wildlife trade on the welfare of slow lorises. We suggest that sharing these individual stories may help generate empathy and educate the public about the impacts of the exotic companion-animal (pet) trade on nonhuman animal welfare.  相似文献

Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.  相似文献

The effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and toluene on soil nitrogen-cycling activities were examined. Ammonium oxidation potential (AOP) was reduced after incubation with as little as 1 microgram of TCE ml-1, and the effects were generally greater when toluene was present and increased with longer exposure. Arginine ammonification potential and denitrification enzyme activity were constant regardless of TCE concentration or the presence of toluene, while nitrite oxidation potential (NOP) exhibited variable sensitivity. KCl-extractable ammonium levels increased dramatically after exposure to 30 and 60 micrograms of TCE ml-1 in the presence of toluene, whereas gamma-irradiated or sodium azide-treated soil incubated with the same concentrations of TCE and toluene showed no increase. Alfalfa-amended soils showed similar decreases in AOP and increases in extractable ammonium during incubation with 60 micrograms of TCE ml-1 and 20 micrograms of toluene ml-1, although most probable number estimates of the ammonium oxidizer population showed no difference between exposed and unexposed soil. AOP and extractable ammonium returned slowly to control levels after 28 days of incubation in the presence of TCE and toluene. Activity assays to which various TCE and toluene concentrations were added indicated that AOP and NOP were relatively more sensitive to these compounds than was arginine ammonification potential. These results indicate that the soil microbial populations responsible for nitrogen cycling exhibit different sensitivities to TCE and toluene and that they may be more susceptible to adverse effects than previously thought.  相似文献

It is now generally recognized that hydration forces dominate close interactions of lipid hydrophilic surfaces. The commonality of their characteristics has been reasonably established. However, differences in measured net repulsion, particularly evident when phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) bilayers are compared, suggest there exists a variety of behavior wider than expected from earlier models of hydration and fluctuation repulsion balanced by van der Waals attraction. To find a basis for this diverse behavior, we have looked more closely at measured structural parameters, degrees of hydration, and interbilayer repulsive forces for the lamellar phases of the following lipids: 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-PE (POPE), egg PE, transphosphatidylated egg PE (egg PE-T), mono- and dimethylated egg PE-T (MMPE and DMPE), 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-PC (SOPC), and mixtures of POPE and SOPC. POPE and SOPC bilayers differ not only in their maximum degrees of hydration but also in the empirical hydration force coefficients and decay lengths that characterize their interaction. When mixed with POPE, SOPC effects sudden and disproportionate increases in hydration. POPE, egg PE, and egg PE-T differ in their degree of hydration, molecular area, and hydration repulsion. A single methylation of egg PE-T almost completely converts its hydration and bilayer repulsive properties to those of egg PC; little progression of hydration is seen with successive methylations. In order to reconcile these observations with the conventional scheme of balancing interbilayer hydration and fluctuation-enhanced repulsion with van der Waals attraction, it is necessary to relinquish the fundamental idea that the decay of hydration forces is a constant determined by the properties of the aqueous medium. Alternatively, one can retain that fundamental idea if one recognizes the possibility that polar group hydration has an attractive component to it. In the latter view, that attractive component originates from interbilayer hydrogen-bonded water bridges between apposing bilayer surfaces, arising from correlation of zwitterionic or other complementary polar groups or from factors that affect polar group solubility. The same Marcelja and Radic formalism that accounts so well for the repulsive component also leads to an estimate of the attractive one. We suggest that the full range of degrees of hydration and of interbilayer spacings observed for different neutral bilayers results in part from variable contributions of the attractive and repulsive hydration components.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Summary Neurointermediate lobes from pituitaries of the frog, Rana berlandieri forreri (Rana pipiens, sensu lato), were maintained in organ culture in media with and without serum for up to six months. The cultured tissues were examined periodically by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and by bioassay of the melanophore-stimulating hormone (MSH) secreted and present in the culture media. Light-microscopic observations revealed a high degree of preservation of the pars intermedia at four weeks with isolated areas of some glands maintaining histological integrity for the entire six months. Similarly, at the ultrastructural level the cells appeared morphologically intact and to be actively synthesizing and secreting hormone. Bioassays showed the glands to be continuously secreting MSH; however, larger yields of hormone were obtained in media lacking serum. No significant ultrastructural differences between cells grown in the presence or absence of serum were detected. The difference in concentration of MSH between the two groups therefore apparently results from enzymatic degradation of the hormone by the serum. Organ culture of the vertebrate neurointermediate lobe may provide a unique method for the production of large quantities of MSH and for the study of other melanotropic and opiate peptides as they may be synthesized and secreted by the pars intermedia.  相似文献

Murine hepatitis virus (strain A59), (MHV-A59) is a coronavirus that buds into pre-Golgi compartments and then exploits the exocytic pathway of the host cell to reach the exterior. The fibroblastic cells in which replication of this virus is usually studied have only a constitutive exocytic pathway that the virus uses. MHV-A59 also infects, albeit inefficiently, AtT20 cells, murine pituitary tumor cells with a regulated as well as a constitutive exocytic pathway. Here we examine AtT20 cells at early times after the infection, when the Golgi apparatus retains its morphological and biochemical integrity. We observe that progeny coronavirus and secretory protein destined for the secretory granules of the regulated exocytic pathway traverse the same Golgi stacks and accumulate in the trans-Golgi network. Their pathways diverge at this site, the condensed secretory proteins including the ACTH going to the secretory granules and the coronavirus to post-Golgi transport vesicles devoid of ACTH. On very rare occasions there is missorting such that aggregates of condensed secretory proteins and viruses occur together in post-Golgi vesicles. We conclude that the constitutive and regulated exocytic pathways, identified respectively by the progeny virions and the secretory protein ACTH, diverge at the exit from the trans-Golgi network.  相似文献

The volumetric response of oocytes during rapid alterations of the extracellular osmotic environment were recorded using video microscopy. From these observations, the kinetics of water loss for human and mouse oocytes were determined over the temperature range 37 to 10 degrees C, including 37, 30, 20, and 10 degrees C. The changes in diameter of oocytes were measured over a 5-min period and a computer model was used to derive values for membrane water permeability (Lp) and inactive volume (Vb) and to compare the experimental data to the predicted values. The results for the mouse oocyte Lp were comparable to values determined by other methods. However the human data, for both failed-to-fertilize and fresh oocytes, have a wide range of values with large standard deviations. The Lp values at the various temperatures were used to calculate the Arrhenius activation energy (Ea). An Ea value of 9.48 kcal/mol was found for the fresh mouse oocyte, whereas the activation energy for human oocytes was extremely low, 3.73 kcal/mol for fresh oocytes and 1.93 kcal/mol for failed-to-fertilize oocytes.  相似文献

Significant advances have recently been made in a number of areas concerning central nervous system (CNS) neoplasia. Particularly salient are the following: (1) gene amplification is related to increasing grade of human glioma malignancy and occurs in approximately 40% of the most common and most malignant variety of glioma, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), (2) by far the most commonly amplified gene in glioblastomas is the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene, which is amplified in about one third of GBMs, (3) a small percentage of GBMs amplify N-myc or the novel sequence gli, (4) the EGFR gene is rearranged in at least half of gliomas in which it is amplified, and (5) EGFR gene rearrangement results in external domain deletions that yield truncated EGF receptors. Antibodies specific for the mutant EGF receptor fusion junction have been successfully produced and provide stimulating new potential avenues for tumor imaging and therapy. For pediatric CNS neoplasms, only medulloblastoma has been investigated in adequate numbers; a small percentage exhibit amplification of either the N-myc or c-myc genes.  相似文献
