Heart rates of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during a critical swim speed test and subsequent recovery
In this study, heart rate (HR) bio-loggers were implanted in the abdominal cavity of 12 post-smolt Atlantic salmon Salmo salar weighing 1024 ± 31 g and acclimated to 12°C sea water. One week after the surgical procedure, a critical swim speed (Ucrit) test was performed on tagged and untagged conspecifics, whereafter tagged fish were maintained in their holding tanks for another week. The Ucrit was statistically similar between tagged and untagged fish (2.67 ± 0.04 and 2.74 ± 0.05 body lengths s−1, respectively) showing that the bio-logger did not compromise the swimming performance. In the pre-swim week, a diurnal cycle was apparent with HR peaking at 65 beats min−1 during the day and approaching 40 beats min−1 at night. In the Ucrit test, HR increased approximately exponentially with swimming speed until a plateau was reached at the final speed before fatigue with a maximum of 85.2 ± 0.7 beats min−1. During subsequent recovery tagged fish could be divided into a surviving group (N = 8) and a moribund group (N = 4). In surviving fish HR had fully recovered to pre-swim levels after 24 h, including reestablishment of a diurnal HR cycle. In moribund fish HR never recovered and remained elevated at c. 80 beats min−1 for 4 days, whereafter they started dying. We did not identify a proximal cause of death in moribund fish, but possible explanations are discussed. Tail beat frequency (TBF) was also measured and showed a more consistent response to increased swimming speeds. As such, when exploring correlations between HR, TBF and metabolic rates at different swimming speeds, TBF provides better predictions. On the contrary, HR measurements in free swimming fish over extended periods of time are useful for other purposes such as assessing the accumulative burden of various stressors and recovery trajectories from exhaustive exercise. 相似文献

Although parasites and their hosts often coexist in a set of environmentally differentiated populations connected by gene flow, few empirical studies have considered a role of environmental variation in shaping correlations between traits of hosts and parasites. Here, we studied for the first time the association between the frequency of adaptive parasitic common cuckoo Cuculus canorus phenotypes in terms of egg matching and level of defences exhibited by its reed warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus hosts across seven geographically distant populations in Europe. We also explored the influence of spring climatic conditions experienced by cuckoos and hosts on cuckoo-host egg matching. We found that between-population differences in host defences against cuckoos (i.e. rejection rate) covaried with between-population differences in degree of matching. Between-population differences in host egg phenotype were associated with between-population differences in parasitism rate and spring climatic conditions, but not with host level of defences. Between-population differences in cuckoo egg phenotype covaried with between-population differences in host defences and spring climatic conditions. However, differences in host defences still explained differences in mimicry once differences in climatic conditions were controlled, suggesting that selection exerted by host defences must be strong relative to selection imposed by climatic factors on egg phenotypes. 相似文献

Although the identification of organisms to the levelof species is the ideal in studies of marinemacrobenthos, there are situations where such a finelevel of taxonomic discrimination may be eitherimpossible or unwarranted, for example when much thefauna is undescribed, or if the task for which samplesare collected does not require them to be identifiedto the species level. The idea that abundances ofhigher taxa, or particular groups of organisms, may beused as surrogates for the total fauna in such studiesis explored in this paper using data from theNorwegian sector of the North Sea. The generalconclusion is that, in surveys of soft sedimentmacrofauna in disturbed areas of the North Sea wherepollution imposes simple spatial gradients on thebenthic communities, little information aboutinter-sample relationships is lost using data based onfamily, polychaete species, or polychaete familyabundances, rather than species abundances. In morepristine areas where spatial patterns are determinedby a number of processes, correlations betweencalculated diversity indices and similarity in faunalpatterns between species and family abundances arestill very high, but less so for polychaete species orpolychaete family abundances. This suggests thatidentification to the level of family may besatisfactory in many routine monitoring surveys,andidentification of only the polychaetes, either to thelevel of species or family, may also be a possiblealternative if there are clear disturbance gradientsin the survey area. Polychaetes are of importance indisturbed areas because the group contains tolerantand intolerant species, and in undisturbed areasbecause within the taxon species have a greater rangeof trophic and reproductive strategies than withinother taxa. Ultimately it is the distribution ofspecies, their identities, and their interactions witheach other and with the environment, that are ofinterest. The present epidemiological study is based on individual health records from 1984 to 1986 in 70 pig herds in the south-eastern part of Norway. For most of the recorded diseases, the incidence rate was less than 1 % per farrowing. The majority of disease recordings concerned 6 frequently-occurring conditions; the MMA-syndrome, mastitis, metritis, neonatal diarhoea, arthritis and scrotal hernia. A seasonal effect on the incidence rate was shown for several diseases. The incidence rate for the MMA-syndrome of about 17.5 % seems to be of the highest recorded for this disease in a population study. 相似文献

With whole cells of a hydrogen cyanide-producing bacterium strain C, of the genus Pseudomonas, it was found that the oxygen necessary for the oxidation of glycine to cyanide could be replaced by various artificial electron acceptors. The order of reactivity was: oxygen > phenazine methosulphate > methylene blue > 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol > ferricyanide. Cyanide production was inhibited by pyrrolnitrin, a well-known inhibitor of many flavine enzymes. The molar ratio of added glycine to cyanide produced was found to be 1.09. With whole bacteria the apparent K(m) (glycine) for the cyanide production was found to be 5.0 x 10(-4) M. 相似文献

Summary Most passerines have all-purpose territories in which both breeding and feeding take place. However, Ortolan Buntings (Emberiza hortulana) in Norway seem to depend on foraging areas outside nesting territories. We used radio transmitters to study patterns of
farmland use by Ortolan Buntings nesting on a burned forest area. Territories on the forest burn were located closer to farmland
than expected by chance. Males were absent from territories on average 27 % of the time and used foraging areas up to 2.7
km away from their territories. Males had to fly over an average of 1.4 territories of other males to reach those foraging
areas. The distance between territory and closest area of farmland (range 40–460 m) did not affect the proportion of time
absent from territories, or other measures of farmland use. However, there was a trend that duration of absences increased
with territory-farmland distance among mated males, and duration of absences were shorter during the nestling period than
before. Thus, it seems that minimizing travel costs may be a behavioural strategy. Even so, males with territories close to
farmland were not more often paired than males further away from farmland. These findings indicate that the spatial distribution
of one habitat (farmland) affects territory establishment and foraging behaviour of Ortolan Buntings nesting in another habitat
(a forest burn).

Zusammenfassung Bei den meisten Singv?geln ist das Revier sowohl Brut- als auch Nahrungsraum. Bei Ortolanen (Emberiza hortulana) in Norwegen, die auf Brandflachen brüten, scheint dies aber anders zu sein. Radiotelemetrische Untersuchen zeigten, dass sie von Nahrungsgründen au?erhalb der Brutterritorien abh?ngig sind. Die Nester auf den Brandflachen h?uften sich am Rand zum benachbarten Ackerland. M?nnchen waren durchschnittlich 27 % der Zeit vom Brutrevier abwesend und gingen his zu 2,7 km vom Brutplatz entfernt auf Nahrungssuche, wozu sie durchschnittlich 1,4 Reviere anderer M?nnchen überfliegen mussten. Der Abstand zwischen Brutrevier und n?chstem Nahrungsplatz (zwischen 40 und 460 m) hatte keinen Einfluss auf den Zeitanteil au?erhalb des Brutreviers. Die Dauer der Abwesenheit stieg jedoch bei verpaarten M?nnchen mit der Entfernung zwischen Brutrevier und Ackerland und sie war kürzer w?hrend der Nestlingsphase. Dies wird als Verhaltensstrategie zur Minimierung der Flugkosten interpretiert. M?nnchen mit Revieren n?her am Ackerland waren nicht h?ufiger verpaart als mehr entfernte Revierinhaber. An easy method to deoxygenize protein or detergent containing buffer solutions by stirring and sparge flushing with an inert gas is described. The deoxygenation of buffers and the establishment of anaerobic conditions in a column chromatography system was followed continuously with an oxygen electrode at the outlet. All polyethylene tubes were placed inside stainless steel tubes and the interspace flushed with nitrogen. A peristalic pump with silicone rubber tubing, mounted in a small plastic box, was likewise flushed with nitrogen. By this method a very unstable cyanide-producing enzyme preparation, solubilized with Triton X-100 from a Pseudomonas species, could be fractionated on a phenyl Sepharose CL-4B column without loss of activity. 相似文献

Recapture of marked juvenile and adult wood frogs in five Appalachian Mountain ponds showed adults to be 100% faithful to the ponds in which they first bred, but approximately 18% of the juveniles dispersed to breed in ponds other than the one of origin. Effective population sizes were generally smaller than the population censuses and genetic neighborhoods had an average radius of 1,126 meters. Values of standardized genetic variance based on effective population size and mating success were relatively small. Genetic population structure estimated from the dispersal data suggested that ponds within about a 1,000 meter radius should show little genetic differentiation; ponds separated by a distance greater than 1,000 meters should experience little gene flow and show higher genetic differentiation.
