The aim of the study reported in this article was to investigate staff nurses’ perceptions and experiences about structural empowerment and perceptions regarding the extent to which structural empowerment supports safe quality patient care. To address the complex needs of patients, staff nurse involvement in clinical and organizational decision-making processes within interdisciplinary care settings is crucial. A qualitative study was conducted using individual semi-structured interviews of 11 staff nurses assigned to medical or surgical units in a 600-bed university hospital in Belgium. During the study period, the hospital was going through an organizational transformation process to move from a classic hierarchical and departmental organizational structure to one that was flat and interdisciplinary. Staff nurses reported experiencing structural empowerment and they were willing to be involved in decision-making processes primarily about patient care within the context of their practice unit. However, participants were not always fully aware of the challenges and the effect of empowerment on their daily practice, the quality of care and patient safety. Ongoing hospital change initiatives supported staff nurses’ involvement in decision-making processes for certain matters but for some decisions, a classic hierarchical and departmental process still remained. Nurses perceived relatively high work demands and at times viewed empowerment as presenting additional. Staff nurses recognized the opportunities structural empowerment provided within their daily practice. Nurse managers and unit climate were seen as crucial for success while lack of time and perceived work demands were viewed as barriers to empowerment. 相似文献

A fluorometric method using 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid for DNA determination in tissues, cultured cells, nucleated blood cells, and yeast cells is described. The method is general, simple, and rapid, and does not require prior DNA extraction, since tissue is directly solubilized in Triton X-100 and ammonia. The procedure is highly sensitive, and is able to measure rather accurately as little as 10 ng of DNA. It is applicable to all types of DNA structure. The DNA content determined in various tissues and cells was: 2.50 mg/g fresh rat liver, 3.32 mg/g rat diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatoma, 2.49 mg/g fresh mouse liver, 8.76 μg/106 human leukocytes, 3.37 μg/106 chicken fibroblasts, 2.97 μg/108 haploid yeast cells, and 2.84 μg/108 haploid yeast protoplasts. 相似文献

–15N was added to the soil in the absence and the presence of NaClO3, respectively nitrapyrin. The first chemical inhibits only nitrate formation, the second inhibits total nitrification. The accumulation of nitrite nitrogen in the soil at levels up to 5 mg kg–1 increased the loss of nitrogen. Yet, it did not increase the binding of mineral nitrogen into soil organic matter, relative to the control soil. The data suggest that the biochemistry of the nitrite formation process, rather than the levels of nitrite ions formed, are of primary importance in the role of nitrification mediated nitrosation of soil organic matter. 相似文献

Fumarase-free electron particles from Propionibacterium freudenreichii and P. pentosaceum were prepared by discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation, and the influence of 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) and ultraviolet irradiation on the reduction of menaquinone and cytochrome b with l-lactate or glycerol-3-phosphate and the reoxidation by fumarate was studied. In the presence of HQNO the steady state reduction level of menaquinone during fumarate reduction was increased whereas the steady state reduction level of cytochrome b was decreased as compared with the reduction levels measured in the absence of HQNO. The steady state reduction level of menaquinone during electron transport to fumarate was not influenced by ultraviolet irradiation and the steady state reduction level of cytochrome b was decreased at increasing irradiation times. Correct modeling of root water uptake partitioning over depth is an important issue in hydrological and crop growth models. Recently a physically based model to describe root water uptake was developed at single root scale and upscaled to the root system scale considering a homogeneous distribution of roots per soil layer. Root water uptake partitioning is calculated over soil layers or compartments as a function of respective soil hydraulic conditions, specifically the soil matric flux potential, root characteristics and a root system efficiency factor to compensate for within-layer root system heterogeneities. The performance of this model was tested in an experiment performed in two-compartment split-pot lysimeters with sorghum plants. The compartments were submitted to different irrigation cycles resulting in contrasting water contents over time. The root system efficiency factor was determined to be about 0.05. Release of water from roots to soil was predicted and observed on several occasions during the experiment; however, model predictions suggested root water release to occur more often and at a higher rate than observed. This may be due to not considering internal root system resistances, thus overestimating the ease with which roots can act as conductors of water. Excluding these erroneous predictions from the dataset, statistical indices show model performance to be of good quality. 相似文献

The improvement of glass capillary preparation technology has allowed the development of high-resolution and very low-bleeding gas chromatographic columns. Using an all-glass injector and a flame ionization detector, it was possible to get a complete resolution of some of the principal stable oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid (cyclized and aliphatic, i.e., eicosanoids). Due to the low bleeding of the column, detector limits exceed those obtained with previously prepared columns. Total profiling studies have been obtained with small amounts of activated washed platelets after only an ether extraction, allowing for the first time a complete, simultaneous survey of cycloxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. We studied the course of early leaf area expansion and specificleaf area (SLA) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) genotypes and tested whether air temperature explainsdifferences in these courses within different environments.Such knowledge can be used to improve crop growth modelling.The relative rate of leaf area expansion (RL) of potato andwheat decreased with thermal time, but was nearly linear upto a leaf area index (L) of 1.0. TheRL (L < 1; mean: 17.9x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of potato showed an interaction betweengenotype and environment, and varied with year. TheRL (L <1; mean: 7.1 x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of winter wheat was lower thanthat of spring wheat (mean: 10.9 x 10-3°C-1 d-1), and bothvaried with year. SLAof potato increased nearly linearly withthermal time from 5 to 15 m2 kg-1at 50% emergence, to 20 to25 m2 kg-1at 155°Cd, and then decreased slightly. The SLAofboth winter and spring wheat began at 16 to 23 m2 kg-1and inmost cases increased slightly with thermal time. In potato,regression parameters of SLAwith thermal time were affectedby environment (management conditions and year) and genotype;in wheat they were affected by environment (year and site).Treatment effects on RLof potato were not correlated with thoseon SLA , and were only partly correlated for wheat. Thereforewe conclude that the early foliar expansion of potato is associatedwith a strong increase in SLA , and not so for wheat.
