Sloths are unusual mobile ecosystems, containing a high diversity of epibionts living and growing in their fur as they climb slowly through the canopies of tropical forests. These epibionts include poorly studied algae, arthropods, fungi, and bacteria, making sloths likely reservoirs of unexplored biodiversity. This review aims to identify gaps and eliminate misconceptions in our knowledge of sloths and their epibionts, and to identify key questions to stimulate future research into the functions and roles of sloths within a broader ecological and evolutionary context. This review also seeks to position the sloth fur ecosystem as a model for addressing fundamental questions in metacommunity and movement ecology. The conceptual and evidence-based foundation of this review aims to serve as a guide for future hypothesis-driven research into sloths, their microbiota, sloth health and conservation, and the coevolution of symbioses in general. 相似文献

Summary In individual leeches the flux of labeled serum through the digestive tract was monitored to measure the rate of digestion. A mean value of 10 mg of the original serum (or 2–3 mg of the contents of the foregut) per individual per day was found, which was constant during 10 weeks. On average the serum remained in the intestinum for 20 days. Occurrence and concentrations of eglin and bdellin, specific proteinase inhibitors of Hirudo, were analyzed after various periods following the ingestion of a meal. In the foregut they were present immediately after feeding. Their quantities increased several-fold within a few weeks. In the intestinum the tests for these inhibitors were always negative. The inhibition of the proteolytic activity of intestinum preparations by eglin, bdellin, and foregut extract was tested in vitro. Using azo-albumin as (an unspecific) substrate, inhibition by eglin was maximally 25% and by bdellin 60%. When the quantitative relations presumably representing in vivo conditions were applied, only a slight inhibition of proteolysis occurred. A hypothetical role of the inhibitors in the preservation of the blood stored in the foregut is discussed.Abbreviations BIGGANA

80 male Wistar rats received an oral ad libitum application of N-ethyl-N-butyl-nitrosamine in a concentration of 0.18 g per litre of drinking water. The changes induced in the esophageal mucosa and determined at three intervals (up to 48 days, up to 91 days, and up to 112 days after commencement of carcinogen exposure) were compared by microscopy with the results from a control group of 10 male Wistar rats of the same age. Several histomorphometric parameters were investigated with the aid of a Leitz ocular micrometer. The earliest localized changes found were an increase in the thickness of the epithelium and the horny layer, and an elongation of the papillary bodies and a widening of the parabasal cellular layer. Later--with a substantial increase in the rate of mitosis in all layers of the epithelium, there was a significant thickening of the non-papillomatous and papillomatous epithelium, an enlargement of the nuclei, especially in the middle and upper layers of the epithelium and a thickening of the horny layer, parts of the latter being parakeratotic. The papillomatous changes corresponded in some cases to moderate epithelial dysplasias. As expected, no fully-developed invasive carcinomas occurred in the early period investigated. The histometric data permit the conclusion to be drawn that the lesions described are demonstrable not only at the exophytic-papillomatous epithelium but also in multifocally localized form at the flat, non-papillomatous mucosa, and that they can definitely be regarded as the expression of an incipient field cancerification. 相似文献
