Landscapes influence precipitation via the water vapor and energy fluxes they generate. Biologically active landscapes also generate aerosols containing microorganisms, some being capable of catalyzing ice formation and crystal growth in clouds at temperatures near 0 °C. The resulting precipitation is beneficial for the growth of plants and microorganisms. Mounting evidence from observations and numerical simulations support the plausibility of a bioprecipitation feedback cycle involving vegetated landscapes and the microorganisms they host. Furthermore, the evolutionary history of ice nucleation‐active bacteria such as Pseudomonas syringae supports that they have been part of this process on geological time scales since the emergence of land plants. Elucidation of bioprecipitation feedbacks involving landscapes and their microflora could contribute to appraising the impact that modified landscapes have on regional weather and biodiversity, and to avoiding inadvertent, negative consequences of landscape management.  相似文献

Nature is a rich source of compounds exhibiting biological activity against weeds, plant diseases, insects and mites. Many of these natural products have complex structures, insufficient biological activity and low persistence under field conditions. Thus the share of natural products being used as active ingredients per se in today’s crop protection market is relatively small. In some cases the natural products have been further modified to provide semi-synthetic derivatives with improved biological properties. More importantly, natural products served as lead structures inspiring chemists to prepare new synthetic analogues with often improved biological activity, simplified structures, increased safety towards humans and the environment and an optimized persistence. This article is not an extensive review of natural products in crop protection, but it discusses some examples illustrating the use of natural products per se, their use as starting materials to prepare semi-synthetic products, and their use as lead structures to prepare new synthetic products which may in the end bear no resemblance to the initial lead.  相似文献

The effect of placebo and ACTH-1-17 (Synchrodyn®, Hoechst) upon urinary free cortisol was examined at 5 different circadian stages on 10 men with Steinbrocker Stage II–III rheumatoid arthritis. A mean cosinor analysis of urinary cortisol data from the subjects prior to treatment with either ACTH or placebo revealed a statistically highly-significant rhythm. A circadian variation in a response of urinary free cortisol to a placebo was also seen. Moreover, the response of the midline-estimating statistic of rhythm (rhythm-adjusted circadian average) of urinary free cortisol to ACTH-1-17 by patients with rheumatoid arthritis is circadian rhythmic. This reactivity rhythm is out of phase with the spontaneous rhythm in urinary cortisol acrophases—in the tests limited thus far to midsummer. The further assessment of the circadian component in the context of broader interactions by rhythms with other frequencies in various conditions in health and disease is warranted by the demonstration of rhythms here presented for men with rheumatoid arthritis.  相似文献

A selection of 16 monoclonal antibodies has been produced against a fresh Ewing's sarcoma (ES) tumor mixed with a permanent ES cell line. The majority of antibodies identify an 80-kDa molecule, which is not detected on healthy tissues except on certain cultured monocytes. One antibody recognize the CD2 ligand MIC2 and 2 antibodies (numbers 13 and 16) define a higher-molecular-mass antigen. Antibody 16 is also expressed on mesenchymal fibroblasts of bone marrow or fetal origin. Tumorspecific antigen expression is potentially linked to the chromosome 22 abnormality decribed in Ewing's sarcoma.  相似文献

Formation of gas and of methylated sulfur compounds was observed in anaerobic enrichment cultures with methoxylated aromatic compounds as substrates. Via direct dilution of mud samples in defined reduced media supplemented with trimethoxybenzoate or syringate two new strains of anaerobic homoacetogenic bacteria (strain TMBS4 and strain SA2) were obtained in pure culture. Both strains produced dimethylsulfide and methanethiol during growth on methoxylated aromatic compounds. Growth tests and determination of stoichiometries demonstrated that the volatile sulfur compounds were formed from the methyl group at the aromatic ring and the sulfide added as reducing agent to the medium (R = aromatic residue): 2 R - O - CH3 + H2 S 2 R - OH + (CH3)2SDimethylsulfide was the major organic sulfur compound formed, whereas methanethiol appeared only as intermediate in small quantities. The isolates grew also with trihydroxybenzenes such as gallate, phloroglucinol, or pyrogallol without formation of methylated sulfur compounds. The aromatic compounds were degraded to acetate. The freshwater strain TMBS4 also fermented pyruvate. Other aliphatic or aromatic compounds were not utilized. External electron acceptors (sulfate, nitrate, fumarate) were not reduced. Both strains were mesophilic and formed rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-negative cells. Spore formation was not observed. In this paper we present a model for erythropoiesis under the basic assumption that sufficient iron availability is guaranteed. An extension of the model including a sub-model for the iron dynamics in the body is topic of present research efforts. The model gives excellent results for a number of important situations: recovery of the red blood cell mass after blood donation, adaptation of the number of red blood cells to changes in the altitude of residence and, most important, the reaction of the body to different administration regimens of erythropoiesis stimulating agents, as for instance in the case of pre-surgical administration of Epoetin-α. The simulation results concerning the last item show that choosing an appropriate administration regimen can reduce the total amount of the administered drug considerably. The core of the model consists of structured population equations for the different cell populations which are considered. A key feature of the model is the incorporation of neocytolysis.  相似文献

An efficient synthetic approach to the core structure 5 of the novel polyketide antibiotic tetrodecamycin (1) was developed. This approach features the acid-catalyzed cyclization of a tert-butyldimethylsilyl protected methyl alpha-(gamma-hydroxyacyl) tetronate, leading to the novel tricyclic ring skeleton exhibited by 5, and an efficient strategy for the parallel introduction of the cis-diol and exo-methylene function. In addition to 5, diastereomer 26, analogue 6 and several derivatives (16, 27-29) were prepared and evaluated for their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Enterococcus faecalis and for their cytotoxic activities against human leukemia cell lines (HL-60, Jurkat T-cells). While compound 5 did not inhibit the growth of the Gram-positive pathogens (MICs >128 microg mL(-1)), analogue 6 and 2-naphthoyl derivative 27 showed promising antibacterial activities with MICs of 4-16 microg mL(-1). Remarkably, the antibacterial activity of these compounds was paralleled by cytotoxicity (IC(50) 10-23 microM). The reactive exo-methylene moiety was shown to be crucial, but not sufficient by its own, for both the antibacterial and the cytotoxic activities.  相似文献

Organelle genomics has become an increasingly important research field, with applications in molecular modeling, phylogeny, taxonomy, population genetics and biodiversity. Typically, research projects involve the determination and comparative analysis of complete mitochondrial and plastid genome sequences, either from closely related species or from a taxonomically broad range of organisms. Here, we describe two alternative organelle genome sequencing protocols. The "random genome sequencing" protocol is suited for the large majority of organelle genomes irrespective of their size. It involves DNA fragmentation by shearing (nebulization) and blunt-end cloning of the resulting fragments into pUC or BlueScript-type vectors. This protocol excels in randomness of clone libraries as well as in time and cost-effectiveness. The "long-PCR-based genome sequencing" protocol is specifically adapted for DNAs of low purity and quantity, and is particularly effective for small organelle genomes. Library construction by either protocol can be completed within 1 week.  相似文献

The genus Tulasnella comprises important orchid mycobionts. Molecular phylogenetic studies on nrITS-5.8S sequences of Tulasnella species previously isolated from mycorrhizas of epiphytic orchids from a tropical Andean forest showed genomic variability among clones which was difficult to interpret as intra- or interspecific variations or to correlate with described Tulasnella species. To improve this situation, we collected basidiomata of Tulasnella in an Andean forest, studied part of the sequences of fungal ribosomal genes and correlated molecular data with the morphology of the specimens. Within five basidiomata displaying slight morphological variability, we found inter-specimen nrITS1-5.8S-ITS2 variability corresponding to proportional differences of less than 1% except for one clone with 5.1% divergence. Results indicate that the slightly variable basidiomata should be considered as one species, which is morphologically tentatively assigned to the Tulasnella pruinosa complex. However, comparison of nrITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences, including sequences of T. pruinosa from other origins, indicate that Tulasnella sp. is only distantly related to the T. pruinosa specimens included in the analyses. Sequences of all morphologically similar and taxonomically well-identified species are required to decide whether the basidiomata analyzed in the present study represent a new species. The new sequences are rather similar to sequences obtained previously from mycorrhizae of epiphytic orchids of the same area indicating mycorrhizal potential of this fungus.  相似文献
