We address the organization of workers in social insect societies. We distinguish between changes in behavioural role over the nurse to forager role sequence, which may depend on changes in physiology, and potentially more rapid changes of task within role. We investigated the association between role and nutrient status in the ant Leptothorax albipennis. Worker lipid stores were quantified using a new body size-controlled method, and were related to worker behaviour. Worker lipid stores were evenly distributed amongst colony members at the end of winter, splitting rapidly into two distinct modes (replete nurses and lean foragers) in spring. The proportion of lean foragers increased throughout spring and summer, until most colonies contained only workers of this type. Callow workers then eclosed with intermediate lipid stores. We developed a computer vision system that tracks all nest ants to extract detailed behaviour of individuals of known lipid stores. Lipid storage was negatively correlated with a worker's foraging propensity, and with measures of spatial occupation in the nest and of activity. Different colonies showed a similar quantitative correlation between lipid stores and behavioural role, suggesting that lipid stores were not only correlated with the relative organization of individuals within each nest, but may also have influenced their absolute role. We reviewed the literature and found evidence that nutrient status influences role predisposition in social insect workers. We conclude that the distribution of worker roles may be linked to the balance between foraging income and energetic consumption within the colony directly via worker nutrient status. The roles of cellular proteases in Moloney murine leukemia virus (MLV) infection were investigated using MLV particles pseudotyped with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) G glycoprotein as a control for effects on core MLV particles versus effects specific to Moloney MLV envelope protein (Env). The broad-spectrum inhibitors cathepsin inhibitor III and E-64d gave comparable dose-dependent inhibition of Moloney MLV Env and VSV G pseudotypes, suggesting that the decrease did not involve the envelope protein. Whereas, CA-074 Me gave a biphasic response that differentiated between Moloney MLV Env and VSV G at low concentrations, at which the drug is highly selective for cathepsin B, but was similar for both glycoproteins at higher concentrations, at which CA-074 Me inhibits other cathepsins. Moloney MLV infection was lower on cathepsin B knockout fibroblasts than wild-type cells, whereas VSV G infection was not reduced on the B-/- cells. Taken together, these results support the notion that cathepsin B acts at an envelope-dependent step while another cathepsin acts at an envelope-independent step, such as uncoating or viral-DNA synthesis. Virus binding was not affected by CA-074 Me, whereas syncytium induction was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner, consistent with cathepsin B involvement in membrane fusion. Western blot analysis revealed specific cathepsin B cleavage of SU in vitro, while TM and CA remained intact. Infection could be enhanced by preincubation of Moloney MLV with cathepsin B, consistent with SU cleavage potentiating infection. These data suggested that during infection of NIH 3T3 cells, endocytosis brings Moloney MLV to early lysosomes, where the virus encounters cellular proteases, including cathepsin B, that cleave SU.  相似文献

A number of alkynols have been prepared by Sonogashira coupling of propargyl alcohol to aromatic halides. Chelation-controlled addition of organometallic nucleophiles to these alkynols was then effected followed by the addition of the sulfur electrophiles, sulfur dioxide or thionyl chloride. The swimming behavior of Acartia clausi within small aquaria containing phytoplankton was videotaped, along with unfed controls. From these videos, aspects such as swimming speed, distance traveled, and 2D (horizontal, X, and vertical, Z) headings were then measured from over 75000 X Z positional data in order to quantify their swimming functional response. There was generally no significant difference in swimming behavior between different food levels, although there was a large difference between feeding and unfed controls. Because feeding bouts moved the copepods a short distance at a slow speed, net vertical displacement decreased as feeding-bout frequency increased. Non-feeding individuals showed longer periods of sinking, interspersed with longer-distance, high-speed jumps, which displaced them farther distances than filter-feeding copepods over the same time interval. For both fed and unfed control copepods, a 1D unbiased random walk was adequate to describe their displacement over these very short time periods (10 s). This behavior is consistent with an area-restricted search foraging strategy. The net vertical displacements predicted by combining the experimental data with a 1D random walk model suggest that A. clausi would be retained within even small 10 cm phytoplankton patches long enough to fill their gut. However, copepods outside of phytoplankton patches must rely on other means to find patches of food greater than 50 cm apart. Potentially, knowledge of a copepod's swimming functional response could enable predictions about the typical spatial and temporal patchiness of its food in situ.  相似文献

Early independence from parents is a critical period where social information acquired vertically may become outdated, or conflict with new information. However, across natural populations, it is unclear if newly independent young persist in using information from parents, or if group-level effects of conformity override previous behaviours. Here, we test if wild juvenile hihi (Notiomystis cincta, a New Zealand passerine) retain a foraging behaviour from parents, or if they change in response to the behaviour of peers. We provided feeding stations to parents during chick-rearing to seed alternative access routes, and then tracked their offspring''s behaviour. Once independent, juveniles formed mixed-treatment social groups, where they did not retain preferences from their time with parents. Instead, juvenile groups converged over time to use one access route­ per group, and juveniles that moved between groups switched to copy the locally favoured option. Juvenile hihi did not copy specific individuals, even if they were more familiar with the preceding bird. Our study shows that early social experiences with parents affect initial foraging decisions, but social environments encountered later on can update transmission of arbitrary behaviours. This suggests that conformity may be widespread in animal groups, with potential cultural, ecological and evolutionary consequences.  相似文献

In this study, we compared the genomes of three metal-resistant bacteria isolated from mercury-contaminated soil. We identified diverse and novel MGEs with evidence of multiple LGT events shaping their genomic structure and heavy metal resistance. Among the three metal-resistant strains, Sphingobium sp SA2 and Sphingopyxis sp SE2 were resistant to multiple metals including mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead. Pseudoxanthomonas sp SE1 showed resistance to mercury only. Whole genome sequencing by Illumina and Oxford Nanopore technologies was undertaken to obtain comprehensive genomic data. The Sphingobium and Sphingopyxis strains contained multiple chromosomes and plasmids, whereas the Pseudoxanthomonas strain contained one circular chromosome. Consistent with their metal resistance profiles, the strains of Sphingobium and Sphingopyxis contained a higher quantity of diverse metal resistance genes across their chromosomes and plasmids compared to the single-metal resistant Pseudoxanthomonas SE1. In all three strains, metal resistance genes were principally associated with various novel MGEs including genomic islands (GIs), integrative conjugative elements (ICEs), transposons, insertion sequences (IS), recombinase in trio (RIT) elements and group II introns, indicating their importance in facilitating metal resistance adaptation in a contaminated environment. In the Pseudoxanthomonas strain, metal resistance regions were largely situated on a GI. The chromosomes of the strains of Sphingobium and Sphingopyxis contained multiple metal resistance regions, which were likely acquired by several GIs, ICEs, numerous IS elements, several Tn3 family transposons and RIT elements. Two of the plasmids of Sphingobium were impacted by Tn3 family transposons and ISs likely integrating metal resistance genes. The two plasmids of Sphingopyxis harboured transposons, IS elements, an RIT element and a group II intron. This study provides a comprehensive annotation of complex genomic regions of metal resistance associated with novel MGEs. It highlights the critical importance of LGT in the evolution of metal resistance of bacteria in contaminated environments.  相似文献

Habitat loss and fragmentation as a consequence of human activities is a worldwide phenomenon and one of the major threats to global biodiversity. Habitat loss and fragmentation is particularly a concern in the biodiverse tropics, where deforestation is occurring at unprecedented rates. Although insects are one of the most diverse and functionally important groups in tropical ecosystems, the quantitative effect of landscape features on their gene flow remains unknown. Here, we used a robust landscape genetics approach to quantify the effect of ten landscape features (deforestation, mature forests, other forest types, the River Chagres, streams, stream banks, roads, sea, lakes and swamps) and interactions between them, on the gene flow of a neotropical forest keystone species, the army ant Eciton burchellii. The influence of landscape on E. burchellii's gene flow reflected the different dispersal capability of its sexes; aerial for males and pedestrian for females, and the different depths of population history inferred from microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA. In contrast to the gene flow‐facilitating effect of mature forests, deforested areas were found to be strong barriers for E. burchellii's gene flow. Other forest types were found to be gene flow facilitators but only when interacting with mature secondary forests, therefore indicating the importance of mature forests for the survival of E. burchelii and its associate species. The River Chagres was identified as a major historical gene flow barrier for E. burchellii, suggesting that an important loss of connectivity may occur because of large artificial waterways such as the Panama Canal.  相似文献
