Sinusoidal oscillation transmission through branched metabolic pathways is studied. Two systems are analyzed, which are composed of two convergent reaction branches and differ in the length of one of them. Linear kinetics is assumed first. Michaelis-Menten enzymes are then considered by using previous results that suggest their behavior with respect to propagation of oscillations is close to linearity around the mean input flux. As a result, there exist ways to modulate the activity of the enzymes so that propagation is equivalent for branched and specific unbranched pathways. Cells may have taken advantage of such a possibility in cases where oscillations have a biological role. 相似文献

Are there enough mast cells in denervated skeletal muscle to account for autopharmacological mediation of the antigen potentials (APs) elicited by microtaps? Through rough qualitative estimations, some authors have suggested a positive answer to this question. However, in view of measurements performed in this investigation of both the density of mast cells and the diffusion coefficient of antigens, the probability of such mediated effects was found to be relatively low:P=0.016 for egg albumin andP=0.004 for ferritin. Therefore, most APs induced by microtaps should be attributed to the direct effect of antigen over the sensitized muscle fibers. Yet, both the density of mast cells found in this work and the known amount of histamine they are capable of releasing when challenged with antigen, support the hypothesis regarding the involvement of these cells when antigen is massively superfused so as to induce Schultz-Dale reactions in muscle strips. Under this circumstance, the direct and mediated mechanisms may coexist. 相似文献

Abstract: Specific endothelin (ET) binding sites were characterized in membranes prepared from human cerebral cortices using binding assay and cross-linking analysis. The presence of immunoreactive (IR) ET-1 was studied by radioimmunoassay. Saturation binding experiments revealed that the K D and B max for 125 I-ET-1 and 125 l-ET-3 to membranes from gray matter were 25 ± 6 pM and 115 ± 15 fmol/mg of protein and 24 ± 5 p M and 108 ± 13 fmol/mg of protein, respectively. Similar results were obtained for white matter. In the presence of 10 n M sarafotoxin-6c, which is selective for ETB receptors, 125 I-ET-1 and 125 l-ET-3 binding was totally abolished. However, in the presence of 1 μ M BQ123, which is selective for ETA receptors, both bindings were not affected. These results suggest that the human cerebral cortex contains only ETB receptors. Cross-linking of 125 I-ET-1 and 125 l-ET-3 to membranes with disuccinimidyl suberate resulted in the labeling of two bands of 48 and 31 kDa. Concentrations of IR-ET-1 in the gray and white matter were 7.0 ± 3.2 and 2.5 ± 1.7 fmol/g wet weight, respectively. The demonstration of high-affinity ETB receptors and the presence of IRET-1 suggest that the peptide may act as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the human cerebral cortex. 相似文献

Management goals in protected areas and/or communities usually include diversity as one of the most valuable and confident criteria. Nevertheless, the use of diversity and related indices as a means of evaluating successful management practices could produce conflicting results. Here we report a case study in one of the most important European protected areas. After 6 years of intensive conservation management of the Don~ana National Park, the general abundance and numbers of the target single-species conservation plan (the Iberian lynx) increased, although carnivore community diversity and evenness decreased. This was a result of a disproportionate increase of an oportunistic native species, the red fox. We propose the combined use of diversity, richness and evenness indices when monitoring management practices such as those reported here. 相似文献

Although the role of the blood group antigens in the gastrointestinal tract is not well understood, alterations in blood
group-related antigens have been described in some pathological processes. Thus, the knowledge of their expression under normal
conditions is of special interest. Those individuals expressing their ABO blood group in exocrine epithelia and secretions
are called secretors. The aim of the present study was the localization of H antigen expression in the normal human gastric
epithelial cells of non-O blood group individuals. For this, a monoclonal anti-H antibody was examined by immunocytochemical
methods at both the light and electron microscopic levels. In combination with enzymatic and chemical treatments, the nature
of the oligosaccharide chains containing the H antigen was characterized. The selected cases were four A secretors, three
A non-secretors, and three B non-secretors. The labeling of the anti-H antibody in the human stomach is described, irrespective
of the blood group of the individuals. The staining was abolished when O-linked oligosaccharides were removed. Since commercially available anti-H antibodies usually also recognize other H-related
antigens, the labeling of the antibody by H-related antigens cannot be dismissed. Our findings suggest the existence of H
or H-related antigens in the O-linked oligosaccharides of the secretory granules of the surface, gastric pit, mucous neck, and transitional cells of the
fundic mucosa, and in the intracellular canaliculi and tubulovesicular system of parietal cells. The H or H-related antigens
were also localized in the apical membrane of all the cell types of the epithelial cells of the human fundic mucosa. The overall
distribution of the H or H-related antigens in the stomach in non-O blood group individuals suggests the constitutive expression
of an α(1,2)fucosyltransferase.

The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and margay (L. wiedii) are sister-species of Neotropical cats which evolved from a lineage that migrated into South America during the formation
of the Panamanian land bridge 3–5 million years ago. Patterns of population genetic divergence of each species were studied
by phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences in individuals sampled across the distribution
of these taxa. Abundant genetic diversity and remarkably concordant phylogeographic partitions for both species were observed,
identifying parallel geographic regions which likely reflect historical faunal barriers. Inferred aspects of phylogeography,
population genetic structure, and demographic history were used to formulate conservation recommendations for these species.
In addition, observed patterns of sequence variation provided insight into the molecular evolution of the mtDNA control region
in closely related felids.

Schistosoma mansoni: SmLIMPETin, a member of a novel family of invertebrate-only regulatory proteins

Eukaryotic LIM domain proteins contain zinc finger forming motifs rich in cysteine and histidine that enable them to interact with other proteins. A cDNA clone isolated from an adult schistosome cDNA library revealed a sequence that coded for a novel class of proteins bearing 6 LIM domains and an N-terminal PET domain, SmLIMPETin. Phylogeny reconstruction of SmLIMPETin and comparison of its sequence to invertebrate homologues and to the vertebrate four-and-a-half LIM domains protein family (FHLs), uncovered a novel LIM domain protein family, the invertebrate LIM and PET domain protein family (LIMPETin). Northern blots, RT-PCR and Western blot showed that SmLIMPETin gene was less expressed in sexually mature adult females compared to sexually immature adult females and sexually mature and immature adult males, and not expressed in schistosomula. 相似文献
