The effects of light characteristics on avian mortality at lighthouses   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The generation of artificial light by human activity can have far-reaching detrimental impacts upon a wide variety of organisms. A great deal of attention has been paid to well-lit buildings, television towers, and communication towers as sources of mortality for nocturnally migrating songbirds. However, despite being among the first human structures known to generate migratory bird kills, little is known about the current impact of lighthouses on birds, or the impact of light design. We examined the impact of a lighthouse on nocturnal avian migrants at Long Point, Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada. From 1960–1989, mean annual kills were 200 birds in spring, and 393 in autumn, with kills of up to 2000 birds in a single night. In 1989, the Long Point lighthouse was automated, with a simultaneous change in beam characteristics – the new beam is narrower and less powerful. This change brought about a drastic reduction in avian mortality at the lighthouse to a mean of only 18.5 birds per year in spring, and 9.6 in autumn from 1990–2002. Our results highlight the effectiveness of simple changes in light signatures in reducing avian light attraction and mortality during migration.  相似文献

Acute hypoxia causes hyperventilation and respiratory alkalosis, often combined with increased diuresis and sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate excretion. With a low sodium intake, the excretion of the anion bicarbonate may be limited by the lower excretion rate of the cation sodium through activated sodium-retaining mechanisms. This study investigates whether the short-term renal compensation of hypoxia-induced respiratory alkalosis is impaired by a low sodium intake. Nine conscious, tracheotomized dogs were studied twice either on a low-sodium (LS = 0.5 mmol sodium x kg body wt-1 x day-1) or high-sodium (HS = 7.5 mmol sodium x kg body wt-1 x day-1) diet. The dogs breathed spontaneously via a ventilator circuit during the experiments: first hour, normoxia (inspiratory oxygen fraction = 0.21); second to fourth hour, hypoxia (inspiratory oxygen fraction = 0.1). During hypoxia (arterial PO2 34.4 +/- 2.1 Torr), plasma pH increased from 7.37 +/- 0.01 to 7.48 +/- 0.01 (P < 0.05) because of hyperventilation (arterial PCO2 25.6 +/- 2.4 Torr). Urinary pH and urinary bicarbonate excretion increased irrespective of the sodium intake. Sodium excretion increased more during HS than during LS, whereas the increase in potassium excretion was comparable in both groups. Thus the quick onset of bicarbonate excretion within the first hour of hypoxia-induced respiratory alkalosis was not impaired by a low sodium intake. The increased sodium excretion during hypoxia seems to be combined with a decrease in plasma aldosterone and angiotensin II in LS as well as in HS dogs. Other factors, e.g., increased mean arterial blood pressure, minute ventilation, and renal blood flow, may have contributed.  相似文献

Laboratory microcosms were used to investigate the mud snail Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) bioturbation activities and behavioural changes in response to snail density, algal food, sediment moisture content, light regime and water cover conditions. Density-dependent kinetics of bioturbated muddy areas were described by von Bertalanffy equations, which provided reliable estimates of mud surface covering rates by snail tracks (m2 h−1 snail−1). Snails need a wet habitat to be active either covered by seawater or by moving in fluid layers for low-tide conditions. Light and microphytobenthic biomass, which are less potent to affect snail activity, are positively interrelated to increase covering rates in the tested chl a concentrations within the range of 1-15 μg g−1. Experimental results suggested us the relevance of microphytobenthos migration processes in affecting crawling activities of H. ulvae that appeared to adjust their foraging efforts in response to benthic algal biomass. Behavioural processes of H. ulvae, in terms of floating, crawling, burrowing and inactive snails, were described using a Markov model. Finally, an empirical model based on von Bertalanffy equations was proposed to describe kinetics of sediment covering by snail tracks under the influences of snail density, sediment moisture content, chl a concentrations and the four combinations of presence/absence of light and seawater. This model should provide a base for further development of a hydrosedimentary model to simulate the effects of H. ulvae bioturbation activities on the resuspension of the intertidal cohesive sediment-water interface for various in situ conditions.  相似文献

Inheritance of the ovulation rate (OR) in the Lacaune meat breed was studied through records from a small nucleus of 36 hyper-prolific ewes screened on farms on the basis of their natural litter size, and from progeny data of three selected Lacaune sires. These sires were chosen at the AI centre according to their breeding values estimated for the mean and the variability of their daughters'' litter size. Non-carrier Lacaune dairy ewes were inseminated to produce 121 F1 daughters and 27 F1 sons. Twelve sons (four from each sire) were used in turn to inseminate non-carrier Lacaune dairy ewes providing 260 BC progeny ewes. F1 and BC progeny were brought from private farms and gathered after weaning on an experimental farm where ovulation rates were recorded in the first and second breeding seasons. With an average of 6.5 records each, the mean OR of hyper-prolific ewes was very high (5.34), and 38.4% of records showed a rate of 6 or more. F1 data showed high repeatability of OR (r = 0.54) within ewe, with significant variability among ewes. High OR (≥ 4) were observed in each family. A segregation analysis provided a significant likelihood ratio and classified the three founders as heterozygous. BC ewes also displayed high repeatability of OR (r = 0.47) and the mean OR varied considerably between families (from 1.24 to 1.78). Seven of the 12 BC families presented high-ovulating ewes (at least one record ≥ 4) and segregation analysis yielded a highly significant likelihood ratio as compared to an empirical test distribution. The high variability of the mean ovulation rate shown by a small group of daughters of BC ewes inseminated by putative carrier F1 rams, and the very high ovulation rate observed for some of these ewe lambs, confirmed the segregation of a major gene with two co-dominant alleles borne by an autosome. The difference between homozygous non-carriers and heterozygous ewes was about one ovulation on the observed scale and 2.2 standard deviations on the underlying scale.  相似文献

Germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene results in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a heritable form of colorectal cancer. We have previously reported two novel mutations that delete exons 11 and 14 of the APC gene, respectively, at the cDNA level without any splice junction defects at the genomic level. We describe here the precise breakpoints of the two mutations and the possible mechanisms leading to the genomic rearrangement. The first rearrangement is most likely a topoisomerase-I-mediated non-homologous recombination resulting in a 2-kb deletion that deletes exon 11 of the APC gene. Both 5' and 3' breakpoints have two topoisomerase I recognition sites and runs of pyrimidines within the 10-bp sequences in their vicinity. Further, the 3' breakpoint has an adenine-thymidine-rich region. This is probably the first report of a topoisomerase-I-mediated germline mutation in a tumor suppressor gene. The second rearrangement is most likely an Alu-Alu homologous recombination resulting in a 6-kb deletion encompassing exon 14. The Alu elements at the 5' and 3' breakpoints include the 26-bp core sequence thought to stimulate recombination. In both rearrangements, partial sequences from the long interspersed nuclear element family are in the vicinity of the breakpoints. Other than serving as markers for regions of DNA damage, their precise role in the recombination events, if any, is unclear. Both deletions result in truncated APC proteins missing the beta-catenin- and axin-binding domains, resulting in severe polyposis and cancer.  相似文献

Study of mechanisms responsible for regulating populations of living organisms is essential for a better comprehension of the structure of biological communities and evolutionary forces in nature. Aphids (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha) comprise a large and economically important group of phytophagous insects distributed worldwide. Previous studies determined that density-dependent mechanisms play an important role in regulating their populations. However, only a few of those studies identified specific factors responsible for the observed regulation. Time series data used in this study originated from the untreated control plots that were a part of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) insecticide trials in northern Maine from 1971 to 2004. The data set contained information on population densities of three potato-colonizing aphid species (buckthorn aphid, Aphis nasturtii; potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae; and green peach aphid, Myzus persicae) and their natural enemies. We used path analysis to explore effects of weather and natural enemies on the intrinsic growth rates of aphid populations. Weather factors considered in our analyses contributed to the regulation of aphid populations, either directly or through natural enemies. However, direct weather effects were in most cases detectable only at P ≤ 0.10. Potato aphids were negatively affected by both fungal disease and predators, although buckthorn aphids were negatively affected by predators only. Parasitoids did not have a noticeable effect on the growth of any of the three aphid species. Growth of green peach aphid populations was negatively influenced by interspecific interactions with the other two aphid species. Differential population regulation mechanisms detected in the current study might at least partially explain coexistence of three ecologically similar aphid species sharing the same host plant.  相似文献

Calpains are Ca(2+)-dependent, intracellular cysteine proteases involved in many physiological functions. How calpains are activated in the cell is unknown because the average intracellular concentration of Ca(2+) is orders of magnitude lower than that needed for half-maximal activation of the enzyme in vitro. Two of the proposed mechanisms by which calpains can overcome this Ca(2+) concentration differential are autoproteolysis (autolysis) and subunit dissociation, both of which could release constraints on the core by breaking the link between the anchor helix and the small subunit to allow the active site to form. By measuring the rate of autolysis at different sites in calpain, we show that while the anchor helix is one of the first targets to be cut, this occurs in the same time-frame as several potentially inactivating cleavages in Domain III. Thus autolytic activation would overlap with inactivation. We also show that the small subunit does not dissociate from the large subunit, but is proteolyzed to a 40-45k heterodimer of Domains IV and VI. It is likely that this autolysis-generated heterodimer has previously been misidentified as the small subunit homodimer produced by subunit dissociation. We propose a model for m-calpain activation that does not involve either autolysis or subunit dissociation.  相似文献

The tactile and thermal sensitivity of diverse regions of the human body have been documented extensively, with one exception being the scalp. Additionally, sensory changes may accompany the hair loss from the scalp in androgen-related alopecia (ARA), but formal quantitative sensory testing (QST) has not been reported in respect of this. Therefore, light touch detection thresholds were obtained at nine scalp sites and one forehead site, using Semmes-Weinstein filaments (Von Frey hairs), and for warming and cooling from skin baseline temperature, using 28 and 256 mm(2) thermodes. Affective, thermal, and nociceptive sensations experienced at thermal detection threshold were quantified. Thirty-two male participants were recruited, 10 of whom had normal hair coverage, 12 of whom had shaved scalp but with potentially normal hair coverage, and 10 of whom exhibited ARA to some extent. The scalp was relatively insensitive to tactile and thermal stimulation at all tested sites, especially so along the midline and near the apex of the skull. Threshold level warm stimuli were rated less pleasant, the less sensitive the test site. After correction for age-related changes in sensitivity, bald scalp sites were found more sensitive to cooling than the same sites when shaved, consistent with prior informal reports of increased sensitivity for some scalp sensations in ARA. QST on hair-covered sites was subject to methodological issues that render such testing non-ideal, such as bias in measurement of resting skin temperatures, and the near impossibility of delivering filament stimuli to the scalp skin without disturbing neighboring hairs.  相似文献

Establishment of long-lived cellular reservoirs of HIV-1 represents a major therapeutic challenge to virus eradication. In this study, we utilized a human primary cell model of HIV-1 latency to evaluate the requirements for efficient virus reactivation from, and the selective elimination of, latently infected human T cells. Ectopic expression of BCL2 supported the replication and spread of R5-tropic HIV-1 in activated CD4+ T cells. After IL-2 withdrawal, the HIV-1-infected T cells survived as resting cells for several months. Unexpectedly, these resting T cells continue to produce detectable levels of infectious virus, albeit at a lower frequency than cells maintained in IL-2. In the presence of HIV-1 inhibitors, reactivation of the resting T cells with γc-cytokines and allogeneic dendritic cells completely extinguished HIV-1 infectivity. We also evaluated the ability of the bacterial LukED cytotoxin to target and kill CCR5-expressing cells. After γc-cytokine stimulation, LukED treatment eliminated both HIV-1-infected resting cells and the non-infected CCR5+ cells. Importantly, complete clearance of in vitro HIV-1 reservoirs by LukED required a lower threshold of cytokine signals relative to HIV-1 inhibitors. Thus, the primary T cell-based HIV-1 latency model could facilitate the development of novel agents and therapeutic strategies that could effectively eradicate HIV-1.  相似文献
