Recent, high-resolution palaeoecological records are changing the traditional picture of post-glacial vegetation succession in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the influence of Lateglacial and Early Holocene climatic changes, other factors are critical in the course of vegetation development and we observe strong regional differences. The floristic composition, location and structure of glacial tree populations and communities may have been primary causes of vegetation development. Refugial populations in the Baetic cordilleras would have been a source, but not the only one, for the early Lateglacial oak expansions. From Mid to Late Holocene, inertial, resilient, and rapid responses of vegetation to climatic change are described, and regional differences in the response are stressed. The role of fire, pastoralism, agriculture, and other anthropogenic disturbances (such as mining), during the Copper, Bronze, Iberian, and Roman times, is analysed. The implications of ecological transitions in cultural changes, especially when they occur as societal collapses, are discussed.  相似文献

The parasitoid Tamarixia radiata (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is being used for the biological control of the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae). The parasitoid is strongly synovigenic, as it is born with very few mature eggs. Synovigenic insects need to feed on host haemolymph to mature additional eggs, and are able to resorb mature eggs to allocate resources toward maintenance. We investigated the effect of host feeding on parasitism, longevity and egg load dynamics, and estimated egg maturation and resorption rates. Although host feeding does not increase survival or longevity, it results in increased parasitization rates when parasitoids are seven days old, and that a single host meal leads to an average gain of three eggs. We discuss the importance of these data to predict the foraging and parasitization behavior of T. radiata in the field, and to potentially improve current efforts to control ACP.  相似文献

Lipid metabolism, specifically fatty acid oxidation (FAO) mediated by carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) 1A, has been described to be an important actor of ghrelin action in hypothalamus. However, it is not known whether CPT1A and FAO mediate the effect of ghrelin on the cortex. Here, we show that ghrelin produces a differential effect on CPT1 activity and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism in the hypothalamus and cortex of mice. In the hypothalamus, ghrelin enhances CPT1A activity while GABA transaminase (GABAT) activity, a key enzyme in GABA shunt metabolism, is unaltered. However, in cortex CPT1A activity and GABAT activity are reduced after ghrelin treatment. Furthermore, in primary cortical neurons, ghrelin reduces GABA release through a CPT1A reduction. By using CPT1A floxed mice, we have observed that genetic ablation of CPT1A recapitulates the effect of ghrelin on GABA release in cortical neurons, inducing reductions in mitochondrial oxygen consumption, cell content of citrate and α-ketoglutarate, and GABA shunt enzyme activity. Taken together, these observations indicate that ghrelin-induced changes in CPT1A activity modulate mitochondrial function, yielding changes in GABA metabolism. This evidence suggests that the action of ghrelin on GABA release is region specific within the brain, providing a basis for differential effects of ghrelin in the central nervous system.  相似文献

Jubanyella plemmyris, a new genus and species of aeginid narcomedusan,is described from one complete specimen stranded on Potter Covebeach, King George Island, Southern Ocean. The new genus andspecies is proposed in order to accommodate the specimen describedin the family Aeginidae; Jubanyella gen. nov. contains undividedstomach pouches, therefore necessitating a new diagnosis forthis family.  相似文献

We have designed synthetic peptides that mimic the primary and secondary structure of the cationic lipopeptide antibiotic polymyxin B (PxB) in order to determine the structural requirements for membrane action and to assess possible therapeutic potential. Two analogues with related sequences to that of PxB, but including synthetic simplifications (disulphide bridge between two cysteines in positions 4 and 10, N-terminal nonanoic acid), have been synthesized. Peptide-lipid interactions have been studied by fluorescence resonance energy transfer between pyrene and 4,4-difluoro-5-methyl-4-bora-3alpha,4alpha-diaza-s-indacene-3-dodecanoyl (BODIPY)probes covalently linked to phospholipids, and the possibility of membrane disruption or permeabilization has been assessed by light scattering and fluorescence quenching assays. The synthetic peptide sP-B, which closely mimics the primary and secondary structures of PxB, binds to vesicles of anionic 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylglycero-sn-3-phosphoglycerol (POPG) or of lipids extracted from Escherichia coli membranes, and induces apposition of the vesicles and selective lipid exchange without permeabilization of the membrane. We conclude that sP-B forms functional vesicle-vesicle contacts that are selective, as previously described for PxB. The second analogue, sP-C, has a permutation of two amino acids that breaks the hydrophobic patch formed by D-Phe and Leu residues on the cyclic part of the sequence. sP-C lipopeptide is more effective than sP-B in inducing lipid mixing, but shows no selectivity for the lipids that exchange through the vesicle-vesicle contacts, and at high concentrations has a membrane-permeabilizing effect. The deacylated and non-antibiotic derivative PxB-nonapeptide (PxB-NP) does not induce the formation of functional intervesicle contacts in the range of concentrations studied.  相似文献

Plant synthetic biology is still in its infancy. However, synthetic biology approaches have been used to manipulate and improve the nutritional and health value of staple food crops such as rice, potato and maize. With current technologies, production yields of the synthetic nutrients are a result of trial and error, and systematic rational strategies to optimize those yields are still lacking. Here, we present a workflow that combines gene expression and quantitative metabolomics with mathematical modeling to identify strategies for increasing production yields of nutritionally important carotenoids in the seed endosperm synthesized through alternative biosynthetic pathways in synthetic lines of white maize, which is normally devoid of carotenoids. Quantitative metabolomics and gene expression data are used to create and fit parameters of mathematical models that are specific to four independent maize lines. Sensitivity analysis and simulation of each model is used to predict which gene activities should be further engineered in order to increase production yields for carotenoid accumulation in each line. Some of these predictions (e.g. increasing Zmlycb/Gllycb will increase accumulated β‐carotenes) are valid across the four maize lines and consistent with experimental observations in other systems. Other predictions are line specific. The workflow is adaptable to any other biological system for which appropriate quantitative information is available. Furthermore, we validate some of the predictions using experimental data from additional synthetic maize lines for which no models were developed.  相似文献

1. The ability of hyporheic sediments to exchange water and retain ammonium and phosphate in the Riera Major stream ,North-East Spain, under different discharge conditions was measured by conducting short-term nutrient and chloride additions. 2. The mean exchange coefficients from free-flowing water to the storage zone (k1) and vice versa (k2) were 0.82 × 10–4 s??1 and 7 × 10??3 s??1, respectively. The ratio of storage zone cross-sectional area to stream cross-sectional area (AS/A) averaged 2.8 × 10–2 and was negatively correlated with discharge (r = –0.85, d.f. = 13, P < 0.001). 3. The percentage of hyporheic zone water which came from surface water varied as a function of discharge and hyporheic depth, ranging between 33% and 95% at 25 cm depth, and between 78% and 100% at 10 cm depth. 4. The nutrient retention efficiency in the hyporheic zone at 10 cm depth measured as uptake length (Swh) was less than 3.3 cm for ammonium and 37 cm for phosphate. Higher nutrient retentions were measured in the sediments at 10 cm depth than at 25 cm, indicating that near-surface sediments were involved more actively in phosphate retention than the deeper hyporheic sediments. The lack of ammonium at any depth of the hyporheic zone showed that ammonium was very rapidly taken up in the surfacial sediments.  相似文献

Planktonic cladocerans of the genus Daphnia are an example of organisms whose ability to disperse among aquatic habitats is limited to dispersal of dormant eggs, encapsulated in protective structures called ephippia. In the present study, we aimed to quantify the production of floating and sinking ephippia in lakes to test the hypothesis that, even if they eventually sink, most of them are first floating at the surface. In addition, we checked the egg content status of the ephippia. The results of this study revealed numbers of ephippia floating at lakes surface reaching thousands per square metre at the time of ephippia production, and constituting substantial share of that production. In studied shallow lowland lakes and in a deep mountain lake, most ephippia were first floating at the water surface, while in deep lowland lakes the proportion was reversed. Approximately half of ephippia that appeared initially at the water surface sank during the six-week sampling period. The egg content status did not differ between floating and sinking ephippia. High numbers of ephippial females staying in the surface layers at night in a mountain lake, and a laboratory experiment with ephippial females indicated that ephippia are actively oviposited to the water surface by gravid females.  相似文献
