Out of 717 patients with meningococcal disease 53 showed one or more of the three allergic complications: 47 (6·6%) developed arthritis, 12 (1·7%) developed cutaneous vasculitis, and 6 developed episcleritis. These complications, which were often multiple, occurred six to nine days after the beginning of the illness and three to six days after the start of successful antibiotic therapy. Those patients with severe systemic disease were prone to the complications.Histological and bacteriological study of the arthritis and vasculitis showed that these lesions were probably not due to persisting infection and suggested that they might be due to immune complex disease.  相似文献

MWCNTs/TiO2 nanocomposite was prepared by oxidising MWCNT in H2SO4/HNO3 then decorating it with TiO2-p25 nanopowder. The composites were characterised using XRD, TEM, FT-IR PL and UV−vis spectroscopy. The TEM images have shown TiO2 nanoparticles immobilised onto the sidewalls of the MWCNTs. The UV-vis spectrum confirms that the nanocomposites can significantly absorb more light in the visible regions compared with the commercial TiO2 (P25). The catalytic activity of these nanocomposites was determined by photooxidation of MB aqueous solution in the presence of visible light. The MWCNTs/TiO2 (1:3) mass ratio showed maximum degradation efficiency. However, its activity was more favourable in alkaline and a neutral pH than an acidic medium.  相似文献

Background

External nutrient discharges have caused eutrophication in many estuaries and coastal seas such as the Baltic Sea. The sedimented nutrients can affect bacterial communities which, in turn, are widely believed to contribute to release of nutrients such as phosphorus from the sediment.

Methods

We investigated relationships between bacterial communities and chemical forms of phosphorus as well as elements involved in its cycling in brackish sediments using up-to-date multivariate statistical methods. Bacterial community composition was determined by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and cloning of the 16S rRNA gene.

Results and Conclusions

The bacterial community composition differed along gradients of nutrients, especially of different phosphorus forms, from the estuary receiving agricultural phosphorus loading to the open sea. This suggests that the chemical composition of sediment phosphorus, which has been affected by riverine phosphorus loading, influenced on bacterial communities. Chemical and spatial parameters explained 25% and 11% of the variation in bacterial communities. Deltaproteobacteria, presumptively sulphate and sulphur/iron reducing, were strongly associated to chemical parameters, also when spatial autocorrelation was taken into account. Sulphate reducers correlated positively with labile organic phosphorus and total nitrogen in the open sea sediments. Sulphur/iron reducers and sulphate reducers linked to iron reduction correlated positively with aluminium- and iron-bound phosphorus, and total iron in the estuary. The sulphate and sulphur/iron reducing bacteria can thus have an important role both in the mineralization and mobilization of nutrients from sediment.

Significance

Novelty in our study is that relationships between bacterial community composition and different phosphorus forms, instead of total phosphorus, were investigated. Total phosphorus does not necessarily bring out interactions between bacteria and phosphorus chemistry since proportions of easily usable mobile (reactive) phosphorus and immobile phosphorus forms in different sediments can vary. Our study suggested possible feedbacks between different forms of phosphorus and bacterial community composition.  相似文献

A mathematical model is designed to assess the impact of some interventional strategies for curtailing the burden of snakebite envenoming in a community. The model is fitted with real data set. Numerical simulations have shown that public health awareness of the susceptible individuals on snakebite preventive measures could reduce the number of envenoming and prevent deaths and disabilities in the population. The simulations further revealed that if at least fifty percent of snakebite envenoming patients receive early treatment with antivenom a substantial number of deaths will be averted. Furthermore, it is shown using optimal control that combining public health awareness and antivenom treatment averts the highest number of snakebite induced deaths and disability adjusted life years in the study area. To choose the best strategy amidst limited resources in the study area, cost effectiveness analysis in terms of incremental cost effectiveness ratio is performed. It has been established that the control efforts of combining public health awareness of the susceptible individuals and antivenom treatment for victims of snakebite envenoming is the most cost effective strategy. Approximately the sum of US$72,548 is needed to avert 117 deaths or 2,739 disability adjusted life years that are recorded within 21 months in the study area. Thus, the combination of these two control strategies is recommended.  相似文献

The use of OFMSW for biogas and compost production is considered as a sustainable strategy in saving valuable landfill space while producing valuable product for soil application. This study examines the effects of anaerobic and aerobic post-treatment of OFMSW on the stability of anaerobic digestate and compost and soil quality using seed germination tests. Anaerobic digestion of OFMSW was carried out for fifteen days after which the residual anaerobic digestate was subjected to aerobic post-treatment for seventy days. Seed germination tests showed that fresh feedstock and digestates collected during anaerobic digestion and during the early stages of aerobic post-treatment were phytotoxic. However, phytotoxic effects were not observed in soils amended with the fully stabilised anaerobic digestate compost, ADC. It was also found that seed germination increases with dilution and incubation time, suggesting that lower soil application rates and longer lag periods between soil application of ADC and planting can reduce the amount of biodegradable organics in the ADC, thus enhancing the benefits of ADC as soil amendment.  相似文献

Morphine and other opioid agonists induce spinal in vivo release of cholecystokinin (CCK), a neuropeptide with anti-opioid properties. However, so far the opioid receptor subtype responsible for this effect has not been determined. In the present in vivo microdialysis study, the morphine-induced release of cholecystokinin-like immunoreactivity (CCK-LI) in the dorsal horn was completely blocked by the delta-opioid antagonist naltrindole (10 microM in the perfusion fluid). Neither the mu-opioid receptor antagonist D-Phe-Cys-Tyr-D-Trp-Orn-Thr-Pen-Thr amide (CTOP; 10 microM in the perfusion fluid), nor the kappa-opioid receptor antagonist nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI); 10 microM in the perfusion fluid) had any significant effect in this respect. In addition, systemic administration of the delta-opioid receptor agonist BW373U86 (1 mg/kg, s.c.) and spinal administration of the delta(2)-opioid receptor agonist, Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Glu-Val-Val-Gly amide ([D-Ala(2)] deltorphin II) (1 microM in the perfusion fluid) induced a significant increase of the CCK-LI level. The effect of BW373U86 on spinal CCK-LI release was completely blocked by spinal administration of naltrindole. The mu-opioid receptor agonist [D-ala(2)-N-Me-Phe(4)-Gly(5)-ol]-enkephalin (DAMGO) (1 microM in the perfusion fluid or 1 mg/kg, s.c.) failed to alter the CCK-LI level. Peripheral nerve lesions have previously been shown to down-regulate mu- and delta-opioid receptors in the dorsal horn, to increase the gene-expression of CCK and CCK-receptor mRNA in dorsal root ganglion neurons and to alter the potassium-induced spinal CCK-LI release. After complete sciatic nerve transection, administration of the two selective delta-opioid receptor agonists induced a significant release of CCK-LI, which was comparable to controls. In contrast, neither systemic nor spinal administration of morphine and DAMGO altered the spinal CCK-LI release in axotomized animals. The present data indicate that the delta-opioid receptor mediates morphine-induced CCK-LI release in the spinal cord.  相似文献

Resting spores extracted from wart (Synchytrium endobioticum)-infected potato tubers were used for DNA extraction and amplification of 18S rDNA. Analysis of the cloned, sequenced fragment revealed high similarity to members of the Chytridiomycota. Using this information, specific oligonucleotide probes were designed and arrayed onto glass slides for detection of the pathogen. Viral sequence information available in the databank was retrieved, or new viral sequences were generated, and used to design probes for specific detection of important quarantine viruses of potato. To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the oligonucleotide probes, total RNA from infected plants was reverse transcribed, labelled with Cyanine 5, and hybridised with the microarray. A significant number of the oligonucleotide probes exhibited high specificity to S. endobioticum, Andean potato latent virus, Andean potato mottle virus, Potato black ringspot virus, and Potato spindle tuber viroid. Hybridisation signals of sub-arrays within slides were reproducible (r=0.79) with a high correlation coefficient of hybridisation repetitions (0.73). Our results demonstrate the potential of microarray-based hybridisation for identification of multiple pathogen targets, which will find application in quarantine laboratories, where parallel testing for diverse pathogens is essential.  相似文献

Body Area Networks (BANs) consist of various sensors which gather patient’s vital signs and deliver them to doctors. One of the most significant challenges faced, is the design of an energy-efficient next hop selection algorithm to satisfy Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for different healthcare applications. In this paper, a novel efficient next hop selection algorithm is proposed in multi-hop BANs. This algorithm uses the minimum hop count and a link cost function jointly in each node to choose the best next hop node. The link cost function includes the residual energy, free buffer size, and the link reliability of the neighboring nodes, which is used to balance the energy consumption and to satisfy QoS requirements in terms of end to end delay and reliability. Extensive simulation experiments were performed to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using the NS-2 simulator. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm provides significant improvement in terms of energy consumption, number of packets forwarded, end to end delay and packet delivery ratio compared to the existing routing protocol.  相似文献

The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Norway is low, but an endemic-like MRSA clone with Staphylococcal protein A (spa)-type t304 has been established especially in nursing homes in the Oslo region causing several large outbreaks. The challenge was that spa-typing and the gold standard Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) were inadequate in discriminating isolates in outbreak investigations. Additional higher resolution genotyping methods were needed. The aims of this study were a) to evaluate whether Multiple-Locus Variable number of tandem repeat Analysis (MLVA) could differentiate within the PFGE clusters between epidemiologically related and unrelated endemic-like ST8-MRSA-IV-t304-PVL-neg (MRSA-t304) isolates and b) investigate the evolution of the endemic-like MRSA-t304 clone over a 15-year time period. All MRSA-t304 isolates detected in the region from 1998 through April 2013 were included. In total, 194 of 197 isolates were available for PFGE and MLVA analyses. PFGE results on isolates from 1998–2010 have been published previously. Two PFGE clusters subdivided into eight MLVA types were detected. One major outbreak clone (PFGE cluster C2/ MLVA type MT5045) appeared from 2004 to 2011 causing long-lasting and large outbreaks in seven nursing homes and one hospital. Five new MLVA types (N = 9 isolates) differing in only one VNTR compared to the outbreak clone C2/MT5045 were detected, but only one (C2/MT5044) was seen after 2011. We suggest that MLVA can replace PFGE analysis, but MLVA may not be the optimal method in this setting as it did not discriminate between all epidemiologically unrelated isolates. The results may indicate that all eight outbreaks in different locations within the PFGE C2 cluster may be branches of one large regional outbreak. The major outbreak strain C2/MT5045 may now, however, be under control, extinguished or has moved geographically.  相似文献

The African citrus triozid (ACT), Trioza erytreae, is an important pest of citrus. Both nymphs and adults damage the plant by feeding on the sap causing young shoots to die. Trioza erytreae also vectors Candidatus Liberibacter africanus, the bacteria that cause citrus greening disease. Since certain non-host plants are known to repel insect pests, it is important to investigate how such plants can be exploited to manage T. erytreae. Here, we screened effects of odours of three non-host plants namely guava (Psidium guajava), garlic (Allium sativum) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) against T. erytreae's location of a common host plant, rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri) and showed that repellence varied interspecifically with the plants. Using cage assays, we found that guava and garlic decreased the attraction of females but not males of T. erytreae to rough lemon volatiles. Chemical analysis by coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) showed that volatiles of three of the plants were dominated by terpenoids; guava (69% comprised of limonene, 34%, (E)-β-ocimene, 29% and (Z)-β-Ocimene, 6%), lemongrass (56% comprised of geranial, 26%, neral, 19% and myrcene, 11%) and rough lemon (74% comprised of limonene, 53%, sabinene, 11% and (E)-β-ocimene, 10%). On the other hand, the volatile profile of garlic was dominated by benzenoids and saturated compounds (85% comprised of benzaldehyde, 12%, benzyl alcohol, 17%, nonanal, 31%, decanal, 13% and hexadecane, 12%). Our results suggest that non-host plant volatile composition and richness in specific compounds may contribute to influencing T. erytreae response to its host, with garlic and guava as potential non-host plants that can be exploited in the management of the pest.  相似文献
