The prevalence of obesity among African American women approaches 50% and greatly exceeds rates for Caucasian women. In addition, black women lose less weight than white during obesity treatment and gain more weight when untreated. This study assessed resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition in obese white (n=122) and black (n=44) women to explore the relationship between biological variables and these observed differences. REE and body composition were assessed by indirect calorimetry and densitometry, respectively, before weight loss. REE was significantly lower in black subjects (1637.6 ± 236.9 kcal/d) than in white (1731.4 ± 262.0) (p=0.04). REE remained significantly lower in blacks than whites after adjusting for body weight (p=0.02). REE, adjusted for fat-free mass, was also significantly lower in blacks than whites (p<0.0001), although the overestimation of fat-free mass by densitometry in blacks may have contributed to this finding. There were no differences between the groups in respiratory quotient. These results suggest that a decreased REE may exist in obese black women, and it may be related to the observed differences between black and white women in the prevalence of obesity and in the response to weight loss treatment. These crosssectional findings await confirmation in longitudinal studies.  相似文献

The addition of serum to uterine secretions was shown to opsonize Streptococcus zooepidemicus and significantly enhance bacterial phagocytosis by equine neutrophils. Treatment of serum by heat inactivation at 56 degrees C, EDTA treatment, and C3 consumption reduced phagocytosis and therefore demonstrated that the process was complement-dependent. The amount of C3 present in uterine secretions was measured in a series of 14 mares infected with Streptococcus zooepidemicus . Ten of the 14 mares had detectable amounts of C3; however, the C3 had been cleaved and rendered nonfunctional. The importance of these findings in relationship to chronic uterine infections in the mare is discussed.  相似文献

Expanded leaves of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. performingC3 photosynthesis were induced to perform pronounced Crassulaceanacid metabolism (CAM) by exposing the plant roots to higherNaCl concentration. Levels of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylaseactivity increased 10-fold during the 7-day induction period.Densitometric analysis of Coomassie-stained sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) polyacrylamide gradient slab gels of leaf extracts, preparedduring the course of CAM induction, revealed that at least fivebands of polypeptides increased in content (kilodalton valuesof 98, 91, 45, 41, 38). Higher levels of three additional polypeptides(kilodalton values of 102, 76, 33) became apparent after tissuehad been grown for 2 weeks at 400 mM NaCl. Of these polypeptides,that having a mass of 98 kilodaltons was identified as the subunitof PEP carboxylase by comparison with the corresponding bandfrom partially purified PEP carboxylase from the same tissue.Only a faint 98 kilodalton band was evident on SDS gels fortissue operating in the C3 mode; staining intensity at thislocation increased with increasing NaCl-salinity in the rootingmedium until CAM was fully induced. Activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase in leaf extracts of the constitutive Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. decreased with increasing leaf age, whereas the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase increased. Changes in enzyme activities were associated with changes in the amount of enzyme proteins as determined by immunochemical analysis, sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and SDS gel electrophoresis of leaf extracts. Young developing leaves of plants which received high amounts of NO 3 - during growth contained about 30% of the total soluble protein in the form of RuBP carboxylase; this value declined to about 17% in mature leaves. The level of PEP carboxylase in young leaves of plants at high NO 3 - was an estimated 1% of the total soluble protein and increased to approximately 10% in mature leaves, which showed maximum capacity for dark CO2 fixation. The growth of plants at low levels of NO 3 - decreased the content of soluble protein per unit leaf area as well as the extractable activity and the percentage contribution of both RUBP carboxylase and PEP carboxylase to total soluble leaf protein. There was no definite change in the ratio of RuBP carboxylase to PEP carboxylase activity with a varying supply of NO 3 - during growth. It has been suggested (e.g., Planta 144, 143–151, 1978) that a rhythmic pattern of synthesis and degradation of PEP carboxylase protein is involved in the regulation of -carboxylation during a day/night cycle in CAM. No such changes in the quantity of PEP carboxylase protein were observed in the leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) The immunoglobulins IgA, IgG, IgG(T) and IgM were measured in uterine secretions from mares with normal uterine defense capability against bacterial contamination, and in mares with lowered resistance. Samples were collected for analysis at two stages of estrus and two stages of diestrus. All mares were then challenged with a pathogenic culture of Streptococci inoculated into the uterus. The immunoglobulins were quantitated on a similar schedule post-inoculation. Generally higher amounts of IgA, IgG and IgG(T) were found in the uterine secretions of mares which had an imparied resistance to endometritis than in mares with an efficient defense mechanisms. IgM was not detected in enough samples to suggest any differences.  相似文献

1. Sendai virus causes permeability changes when added to freshly isolated brain cells (cerebellum or ependymal cells) or to a culture of forebrain cells. 2. Sendai virus causes permeability changes when added to organ cultures of ferret lung or nasal turbinate. Influenza virus causes no permeability changes under these conditions. 3. Rabies virus and vesicular-stomatitis virus, in contrast with Sendai virus, do not cause permeability changes in BHK cells or Lettrée cells. 4. Serum from patients suffering from viral hepatitis does not cause permeability changes in human leucocytes; addition to Sendai virus causes permeability changes. 5. It is concluded that permeability changes accompanying viral entry occur only with certain types of paramyxovirus, but that there is little restriction on cell type. 6. MDBK cells infected with Sendai virus show permeability changes during viral release, similar to those that occur during viral entry. Because these changes do not appear to be restricted to paramyxoviruses, they may have considerable clinical significance.  相似文献

Summary We present a quantitative theory that relates the fluorescence intensityvs. temperature (I vs. T) profile of a fluorescent-labeled two-component lipid bilayer to the phase diagram of the bilayer and the partition coefficientK of the fluorophore between fluid and solid phases of the bilayer. We show how the theory can be used to evaluateK from experimentalI vs. T profiles and the appropriate phase diagrams as well as to understand the different shapes ofI vs. T profiles obtained with particular fluorophores and phase diagrams. Using calculatedI vs. T graphs, we discuss the meaning of parameters, such as midpoint of the phase transition and onset and termination of a transition, which are often used to characterize phase transitions on the basis of fluorescence intensityvs. temperature profiles.  相似文献

Cervical extensibility increased from Day 16 to term in the pregnant rat. Following ovariectomy on Day 16 of pregnancy the cervix became as inextensible by Day 20 as that of non-pregnant animals. Fetal growth was maintained in rats ovariectomized on Day 16 if given oestradiol benzoate plus progesterone but cervical extensibility only increased to a small extent. Relaxin given to these animals further increased cervical extensibility, suggesting a role for this hormone.  相似文献

Summary The transposition of Tn10 from the E. coli chromosome to pDU202 (a TcS deletion mutant of R100-1) was selected by a mating technique: it took place at a frequency of 10-7 in both rec + and recA hosts. Seventeen transfer deficient mutants of pDU202 caused by the insertion of Tn10 into the R factor's transfer genes were analysed. Insertion of Tn10 occurred at at least eight sites, with some apparent clustering in the second part of the transfer operon, and with equal numbers in each orientation. Both strongly and weakly polar insertions were observed, and the strength of the polarity was correlated with the Tn10 orientation. The map order of the second part of the transfer operon was confirmed as traC traF traH traG traS traD, analogous to that of F. The strongly polar insertion mutants still expressed traI at wild-type levels, providing further evidence that this gene does not belong to the transfer operon of R100.  相似文献
