When species competing for the same resources coexist, some segregation in the way they utilize those resources is expected. However, little is known about how closely related sympatric breeding species segregate outside the breeding season. We investigated the annual segregation of three closely related seabirds (razorbill

) breeding at the same colony in Southwest Greenland. By combining GPS and geolocation (GLS) tracking with dive depth and stable isotope analyses, we compared spatial and dietary resource partitioning. During the breeding season, we found the three species to segregate in diet and/or dive depth, but less in foraging area. During both the post-breeding and pre-breeding periods, the three species had an increased overlap in diet, but were dispersed over a larger spatial scale. Dive depths were similar across the annual cycle, suggesting morphological adaptations fixed by evolution. Prey choice, on the other hand, seemed much more flexible and therefore more likely to be affected by the immediate presence of potential competitors. 相似文献

The lumpy distribution of species along a continuous one-dimensional niche axis recently found by Scheffer and van Nes (Scheffer
and van Ness 2006) is explained mathematically. We show that it emerges simply from the eigenvalue and eigenvectors of the community matrix.
Both the transient patterns—lumps and gaps between them—as well as the asymptotic equilibrium are explained. If the species
are evenly distributed along the niche axis, the emergence of these patterns can be demonstrated analytically. The more general
case, of randomly distributed species, shows only slight deviations and is illustrated by numerical simulation. This is a
robust result whenever the finiteness of the niche is taken into account: it can be extended to different analytic dependence
of the interaction coefficients with the distance on the niche axis (i.e., different kernel interactions), different boundary
conditions, etc. We also found that there is a critical value both for the width of the species distribution σ and the number of species n below which the clusterization disappears.

We report the first and complete nucleotide sequence of a human gamma 3 heavy chain constant region gene (C gamma 3). This gene displays the same organization than the others C gamma genes and exhibits normal RNA splice and polyadenylation sites. A comparison of its primary sequence with those of C gamma 1, C gamma 2 and C gamma 4 genes confirms the high degree of homology (95%) of the human family in both coding and non-coding regions, and the divergence of the hinge region. The C gamma 3 gene we sequenced codes for a Gm(b) gamma 3 chain (EZZ). Comparison with other known protein sequences reveals that only two specific aminoacids are involved in the Gm(b) and Gm(g) allotypes, which suggests an important part of the spatial configuration in the allotypic specificities. 相似文献

Background
The diversity of parasites attacking a host varies substantially among different host species. Understanding the factors that explain these patterns of parasite diversity is critical to identifying the ecological principles underlying biodiversity. Seabirds (Charadriiformes, Pelecaniformes and Procellariiformes) and their ectoparasitic lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) are ideal model groups in which to study correlates of parasite species richness. We evaluated the relative importance of morphological (body size, body weight, wingspan, bill length), life-history (longevity, clutch size), ecological (population size, geographical range) and behavioural (diving versus non-diving) variables as predictors of louse diversity on 413 seabird hosts species. We have isolated and sequenced a full-length cDNA clone encoding rat glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-dehydrogenase (GAPDH, E.C.1.2.1.12). The entire mRNA is 1269 nucleotides long exclusive of poly(A) and contains respectively 71 and 196 bases of 5' and 3' non-coding regions. Primer extension as well as S1 nuclease protection experiments clearly established that a single (or at least a highly prominent) GAPDH mRNA species is expressed in all rat tissues examined. This sequence allowed the determination of the hitherto unknown primary structure of rat GAPDH which is 333 aminoacids long. Comparison between GAPDH sequences from rat, man and chicken revealed a high degree of sequence conservation at both nucleotide and protein levels. 相似文献
