All of the marine bacterioplankton-derived 16S ribosomal DNA sequences previously deposited in GenBank were reanalyzed to determine the number of bacterial species in the oceanic surface waters. These sequences have been entered into the database since 1990. The rate of new additions reached a peak in 1999 and subsequently leveled off, suggesting that much of the marine microbial species richness has been sampled. When the GenBank sequences were dereplicated by using 97% similarity as a cutoff, 1,117 unique ribotypes were found. Of the unique sequences, 609 came from uncultured environmental clones and 508 came from cultured bacteria. We conclude that the apparent bacterioplankton species richness is relatively low.  相似文献

柑桔全爪螨为害梨树时春夏种群密度极低但随后却突然爆发,形成一年之中只有秋季一个高峰期之发生规律,这与其在柑桔上一年之中两个发生高峰期的发生特点形成鲜明对照。为阐明柑桔全爪螨在梨树直的这种季节消长规律之成因,本采用对比研究方法分析研究了该螨在梨叶和柑桔叶一年之中的产卵率,成活率以及卵的孵化率等生态学习性。结果表明产卵率在梨叶与柑桔叶之间全年均无显差异;然而其在梨叶上的成活率以及卵的孵化率在八月之产明显低于其在柑桔叶上之值,且差异显或极显,但八月之后以上各项指标在梨叶和柑桔叶上均无显差异。  相似文献

The flagella of Chlamydomonas reinhardi are required for the initiation of mating between opposite mating type gametes. It has been suggested that flagellar length is a crucial factor in a cell's ability to transmit and receive the sexual signals necessary for fusion. Mating type + (mt+) cells of gam-5, a mutant which is characterized by variable length, paralyzed flagella, were mated with wild-type, mt cells. Activation of the mating structures of the gam-5 gametes, and therefore successful signalling, was demonstrated for cells with flagella as short as 1.5 μm (less than 1/6 normal length). Because this mutant displays aberrant axonemal structures, and because various mutants with other defects in axonemal structure are also able to mate, it seems likely that the flagellar membrane may provide the main conduit for gametic sexual signals.  相似文献

While antagonistic species interactions such as predation or competition have a long history of study, positive inter‐species interactions have received comparatively little attention. Mutualisms and commensalisms appear to be widespread in the animal kingdom, with examples of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles from around the world engaging with other species in evidentially beneficial ways. Cleaning mutualism is a specific type positive inter‐species interaction in which one species removes and feeds upon parasites infesting the other. Here, we document a new subset of positive inter‐species “cleaning” interactions, in which one partner benefits from and reduces the abundance of pest species attracted by but not attached to their host. We observed in person and in camera trap footage numerous instances of insectivorous bats associating with white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and feeding on the swarms of biting flies attracted to these large mammals. We call for the increased reporting of positive inter‐species associations to better our understanding of the mechanisms leading to the formation of these interactions and the effects that these relationships may for the structuring of ecological communities.  相似文献

Conclusions No evidence of a definitely pathological nature was found during the course of these studies, although certain findings indicate that there are factors which may be considered as characteristic of mussels, and other similar bivalves, which are highly toxic. The quantities of poison present in the digestive diverticula of a single mussel were so small that its demonstration by histo-chemical methods was impossible. The observations have shown, also, that the mussels are not affected physiologically by the ingestion of this poisonous substance which is so highly toxic to warm blooded animals. However, these findings are taken from observations which have been made in a restricted area, and may be considerably in error if applied to another. Therefore, further studies must be carried on elsewhere and the results compared with these before conclusions may be drawn with any degree of certainty.A direct relationship between the quantity and nature of the stored food material in the digestive diverticula and the seasonal variations in the plankton has been definitely established.Aided by Grants from the James Moffitt Fund.  相似文献

The plasma levels of 8 steroid hormones were studied longitudinally in 20 newborns affected with either 21-hydroxylase (21-OH), 11-hydroxylase (11-OH) or 3 beta-hydroxysteroid deshydrogenase (3 beta-ol) deficiencies during the first month of life. Comparison was also made between the patterns observed according to age at first examination (n = 13 before 8 days of age) and the type of the enzymatic block. The most striking findings were the variability in hormone levels and/or evolution with age and the difficulties in making a definite positive or etiological diagnosis at first examination. In some newborns with untreated 21-OH deficiency, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone levels may start off within the normal range or not so far above it. Also, levels of unconjugated dehydroepiandrosterone and other delta 5 steroids may be so high during the first week of life in all 3 forms that an erroneous diagnosis of 3 beta-ol deficiency could easily be considered. In several cases the etiological diagnosis was only ascertained by multiple steroid determination and/or dynamic tests. These discrepancies were not found in infants studied later on in life. It thus appears that a peculiar steroid pattern is observed in the immediate postnatal period in babies with various enzyme defects, which might be related to the morphological changes occurring in the adrenal cortex at this age.  相似文献

Madagascar is renowned for its unparalleled species richness and levels of endemism, which have led, in combination with species extinction caused by an unprecedented rate of anthropogenic deforestation, to its designation as one of the most important biodiversity hotspots. It is home to 10 650 species (84% endemic) of angiosperms in 1621 genera (19% endemic). During the last two centuries, botanists have focused their efforts on the provision of a taxonomic framework for the flora of the island, but much remains to be investigated regarding the evolutionary processes that have shaped Madagascan botanical diversity. In this article, we review the current state of phylogenetic and biogeographical knowledge of the endemic angiosperm genera. We also propose a new stratified biogeographical model, based on palaeogeographical evidence, allowing the inference of the spatio‐temporal history of Madagascan taxa. The implications of past climate change and extinction events on the evolutionary history of the endemic genera are also discussed in depth. Phylogenetic information was available for 184 of the 310 endemic genera (59.3%) and divergence time estimates were available for 67 (21.6%). Based on this evidence, we show the importance of phylogenetic clustering in the assemblage of the current Madagascan diversity (26% of the genera have a sister lineage from Madagascar) and confirm the strong floristic affinities with Africa, South‐East Asia and India (22%, 9.1% and 6.2% of the genera, respectively). The close links with the Comoros, Mascarenes and Seychelles are also discussed. These results also support an Eocene/Oligocene onset for the origin of the Madagascan generic endemic flora, with the majority arising in the Miocene or more recently. These results therefore de‐emphasize the importance of the Gondwanan break‐up on the evolution of the flora. There is, however, some fossil evidence suggesting that recent extinctions (e.g. Sarcolaenaceae, a current Madagascan endemic, in southern Africa) might blur vicariance patterns and favour dispersal explanations for current biodiversity patterns. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献
