Diet strongly influences the chemistry of vertebrate soft and hard tissues. Bird bone and eggshell mineral preserve reliable records of prey consumption, even beyond the life of the predator, and analyses of hard tissues have usefully reconstructed avian diet. Here, we assess the feasibility of a non‐destructive method for distinguishing krill‐poor from krill‐rich diets in penguins. Krill (Euphausiaceae) are fluoride‐rich, and penguins that consume krill produce fluoride‐rich bones. The chemistry of bone mineral may be elucidated using Raman spectroscopy without recourse to specialised sample preparation. Published data from the diet of six penguin species were compared to a fluoride‐informative spectral band (phosphate symmetric stretch, ν1‐PO43?) in the Raman spectra of penguin humeri. Penguins that consume abundant krill (e.g. Adélie and emperor) have ν1‐PO43?‐band positions higher than 963 cm?1, whereas penguins that primarily eat teleost fish or cephalopods (e.g. Fiordland crested, Humboldt, little blue and yellow‐eyed) have ν1‐PO43?‐band positions lower than 963 cm?1. A krill‐rich diet can therefore be determined from the Raman spectra of penguin bones. Raman spectroscopy could be a useful supplement to existing diet analysis techniques.  相似文献

The power of hybridization between species to generate variation and fuel adaptation is poorly understood despite long‐standing interest. There is, however, increasing evidence that hybridization often generates biodiversity, including via hybrid speciation. We tested the hypothesis of hybrid speciation in butterflies occupying extreme, high‐altitude habitats in four mountain ranges in western North America with an explicit, probabilistic model, and genome‐wide DNA sequence data. Using this approach, in concert with ecological experiments and observations and morphological data, we document three lineages of hybrid origin. These lineages have different genome admixture proportions and distinctive trait combinations that suggest unique and independent evolutionary histories.  相似文献

Genera of Eutheiini are reviewed and Eutheimorphus is removed from this tribe of ant‐like stone beetles (Scydmaeninae) and transferred to Cephenniini. A monogeneric Marcepaniini trib.n. is described to accommodate Marcepania gen.n. from Malaysia, with five species: M. semengohensis sp.n. (the type species of Marcepania), M. tuberculata sp.n. , M. seramaensis sp.n. , M. minutissima sp.n. and M. elongata sp.n. A phylogenetic analysis of all genera of Cephenniini, Eutheiini and Marcepaniini based on adult morphological characters resulted in recovering a well‐supported monophyletic clade Eutheiini + (Marcepaniini + Cephenniini) and these tribes are included in Cephenniitae stat.n. (Eutheiini and Cephenniini are therefore removed from Scydmaenitae). Only a weak support for monophyly of Eutheiini was found, but morphological characters allow for maintaining this presumably relic group as a separate tribe. Previously proposed monophyletic groups within Cephenniini were recovered as such, but after inclusion of Eutheimorphus, a sister taxon to the ‘Cephennomicrus group’, the latter lineage gained weak statistical support. The evolutionary history of Cephenniitae is discussed, with focus on known northern hemisphere fossils classified in Scydmaenitae and Hapsomelitae, but possibly closely allied to Cephenniitae. Establishing the supertribe Cephenniitae is the first step toward a profound reclassification of Scydmaeninae on a robust phylogenetic basis. The incidence of oestrus (6/46) and ovulation (14/46) in ewes given antisera to androstenedione, oestrone, oestradiol and testosterone either separately or as a mixture of these sera at the time of treatment with progestagen sponges alone or progestagen sponges followed by LH-RH was similar to that of control ewes (2/13 and 6/13 respectively). The number of corpora lutea (CL) recorded for those ewes that did ovulate was, however, greater in the antiserum-treated ewes (22 CL/14 ewes) than in the controls (6 CL/6 ewes) at the first ovulation after sponge withdrawal. This superiority persisted to the second ovulation (53 CL/42 treated ewes compared to 13 CL/13 controls). The results for groups treated with antisera did not differ amongst themselves.  相似文献
