Dispersal is thought to be an important process determining range size, especially for species in highly spatially structured habitats, such as tropical reef fishes. Despite intensive research efforts, there is conflicting evidence about the role of dispersal in determining range size. We hypothesize that traits related to dispersal drive range sizes, but that complete and comprehensive datasets are essential for detecting relationships between species’ dispersal ability and range size. We investigate the roles of six traits affecting several stages of dispersal (adult mobility, spawning mode, pelagic larval duration (PLD), body size, aggregation behavior, and circadian activity), in explaining range size variation of reef fishes in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). All traits, except for PLD (148 species), had data for all 497 species in the region. Using a series of statistical models, we investigated which traits were associated with large range sizes, when analyzing all TEP species or only species with PLD data. Furthermore, using null models, we analyzed whether the PLD‐subset is representative of the regional species pool. Several traits affecting dispersal ability were strongly associated with range size, although these relationships could not be detected when using the PLD‐subset. Pelagic spawners (allowing for passive egg dispersal) had on average 56% larger range sizes than nonpelagic spawners. Species with medium or high adult mobility had on average a 25% or 33% larger range, respectively, than species with low mobility. Null models showed that the PLD‐subset was nonrepresentative of the regional species pool, explaining why model outcomes using the PLD‐subset differed from the ones based on the complete dataset. Our results show that in the TEP, traits affecting dispersal ability are important in explaining range size variation. Using a regionally complete dataset was crucial for detecting the theoretically expected, but so far empirically unresolved, relationship between dispersal and range size.  相似文献

Characterization of all chromosomes of the Andean G19833 bean genotype was carried out by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Eleven single-copy genomic sequences, one for each chromosome, two BACs containing subtelomeric and pericentromeric repeats and the 5S and 45S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were used as probes. Comparison to the Mesoamerican accession BAT93 showed little divergence, except for additional 45S rDNA sites in four chromosome pairs. Altogether, the results indicated a relative karyotypic stability during the evolution of the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools of P. vulgaris.  相似文献

Global biodiversity is affected by numerous environmental drivers. Yet, the extent to which global environmental changes contribute to changes in local diversity is poorly understood. We investigated biodiversity changes in a meta‐analysis of 39 resurvey studies in European temperate forests (3988 vegetation records in total, 17–75 years between the two surveys) by assessing the importance of (i) coarse‐resolution (i.e., among sites) vs. fine‐resolution (i.e., within sites) environmental differences and (ii) changing environmental conditions between surveys. Our results clarify the mechanisms underlying the direction and magnitude of local‐scale biodiversity changes. While not detecting any net local diversity loss, we observed considerable among‐site variation, partly explained by temporal changes in light availability (a local driver) and density of large herbivores (a regional driver). Furthermore, strong evidence was found that presurvey levels of nitrogen deposition determined subsequent diversity changes. We conclude that models forecasting future biodiversity changes should consider coarse‐resolution environmental changes, account for differences in baseline environmental conditions and for local changes in fine‐resolution environmental conditions.  相似文献

The entire cytoplasmic contents of 15 highly polyploid nurse cells are transported rapidly to the oocyte near the end of Drosophila oogenesis. chickadee is one of a small group of genes whose mutant phenotype includes a disruption of this nurse cell cytoplasm transport. We have cloned the chickadee gene and found that cDNA clones encode a protein 40% identical to yeast and Acanthamoeba profilin. The nurse cells from chickadee egg chambers that lack ovary-specific profilin fail to synthesize cytoplasmic actin networks correctly. In addition, the nurse cell nuclei in chickadee egg chambers become displaced and often partially stretched through the channels leading into the oocyte, blocking the flow of cytoplasm. We suggest that the newly synthesized cytoplasmic actin networks are responsible for maintaining nuclear position in the nurse cells.  相似文献

High soil P concentrations hinder ecological restoration of biological communities typical for nutrient-poor soils. Phosphorus mining, i.e., growing crops with fertilization other than P, might reduce soil P concentrations. However, crop species have different P-uptake rates and can affect subsequent P removal in crop rotation, both of which may also vary with soil P concentration. In a pot experiment with three soil-P-levels (High-P: 125–155 mg POlsen/kg; Mid-P: 51–70 mg POlsen/kg; Low-P: 6–21 mg POlsen/kg), we measured how much P was removed by five crop species (buckwheat, maize, sunflower, flax, and triticale). Total P removal decreased with soil-P-level and depended upon crop identity. Buckwheat and maize removed most P from High-P and Mid-P soils and triticale removed less P than buckwheat, maize, and sunflower at every soil-P-level. The difference in P removal between crops was, however, almost absent in Low-P soils. Absolute and relative P removal with seeds depended upon crop species and, for maize and triticale, also upon soil-P-level. None of the previously grown crop species significantly affected P removal by the follow-up crop (perennial ryegrass). We can conclude that for maximizing P removal, buckwheat or maize could be grown.  相似文献

The thymus supports differentiation of T cell precursors. This process requires relocation of developing thymocytes throughout multiple microenvironments of the organ, mainly with thymic epithelial cells (TEC), which control intrathymic T cell differentiation influencing the formation and maintenance of the immunological synapse. In addition to the proteins of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), this structure is supported by several adhesion molecules. During the process of thymopoiesis, we previously showed that laminin-mediated interactions are involved in the entrance of T-cell precursors into the thymus, as well as migration of differentiating thymocytes within the organ. Using small interference RNA strategy, we knocked-down the ITGA6 gene (which encodes the CD49f integrin α-chain) in cultured human TEC, generating a decrease in the expression of the corresponding CD49f subunit, in addition to modulation in several other genes related to cell adhesion and migration. Thymocyte adhesion to TEC was significantly impaired, comprising both immature and mature thymocyte subsets. Moreover, we found a modulation of the MHC, with a decrease in membrane expression of HLA-ABC, in contrast with increase in the expression of HLA-DR. Interestingly, the knockdown of the B2M gene (encoding the β-2 microglobulin of the HLA-ABC complex) increased CD49f expression levels, thus unraveling the existence of a cross-talk event in the reciprocal control of CD49f and HLA-ABC. Our data suggest that the expression levels of CD49f may be relevant in the general control of MHC expression by TEC and consequently the corresponding synapse with developing thymocytes mediated by the T-cell receptor.  相似文献

Artificially induced cessation of egg laying caused regression of the reproductive tract in hens, as well as changes in circulating concentrations of sex steroids. Hens were bled at several stages during and after artificial moult induced by fasting or overfeeding a diet low in calcium or high in zinc. Hens received a single injection of 200 i.u. of horse LH at Day 0, 7, 21, 35 and 77 (Exp. 1) or Day 0, 8, 23, 35 and 71 (Exp. 2) after start of the treatment to induce moult. Blood samples were taken before and 20, 40 and 60 min (Exp. 1) or 15, 30 and 45 min (Exp. 2) after LH injection. Hens which were fasted or given the diet high in zinc had low plasma progesterone concentrations and the response to LH was reduced or delayed. In hens fed low calcium the reduction in plasma progesterone was less pronounced and the responsiveness to LH was more or less maintained. Conversely, there was no response of oestradiol to LH in laying hens. However, oestradiol concentrations increased in moulting hens after LH injection, due to the high oestradiol secretion from the small white follicles, since all yolky follicles were atretic.  相似文献

Normal fed and 2 days fasted Warren chickens were injected intravenously with 100 micrograms of ovine growth hormone (GH) and ovine prolactin and plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones were assayed prior and up to 2 h after injection. Fasting alone decreases T3, but increases T4. An injection of GH resulted in increases of plasma T3 concentrations in two fasting experiments by 40% (after 3/4 h) and 104% (after 1 h). In normal fed animals no increase is observed in the first experiment, whereas a 35% increase occurs in the second one. An injection of 100 micrograms prolactin does not influence T3 in normal fed or fasting animals. Both GH and prolactin, however, may decrease plasma concentrations of T4. In a separate experiment 50 micrograms and 200 micrograms of GH raised the decreased T3 levels after fasting by 39% and 60% respectively 1 h after injection and by 24 and 61% respectively in normal fed chicken, whereas prolactin was ineffective in this regard. Using Hisex chickens, the influence of an injection of 100 micrograms GH on plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones could be confirmed. At the same time GH increases the liver 5'-monodeiodinase activity by 330% after 1 h and by 147% after 2 h. The peroxidase activity is not influenced in normal fed chickens, but GH decreases this activity in food deprived animals after 1 h and 2 h. It is concluded that ovine GH, but not prolactin, stimulates the peripheral conversion of T4 into T3 in both normal fed and food deprived chicken and that this effect is dose dependent.  相似文献

The morphogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) nuclear inclusions (NIs) was investigated using unadapted clinical isolates and adapted laboratory strains. Both adapted and unadapted strains of CMVs induced NIs whose morphologic appearance was similar in human fibroblastic cells. Early NIs appeared as ring-like structures composed of dense granular and fibrillar material, while late NIs appeared to consist of multiple electron-lucent areas containing coarse granules and bounded by electron-dense fibrillar material (cellulae). Capsids and nucleocapsids were associated primarily with the electron-dense fibrillar material; however, developing nucleocapsids were most often observed at the interface of the electron-dense and -lucent areas. Although there was some variation in the rate of development and maturation of the NIs with the intensity of infection, all CMVs examined produced late NIs with similar organizational patterns consisting of cellulae. Substitution of human fibroblastic cells derived from various tissues as cellular substrate did not appreciably affect the results. Thus, the unique organization of the CMV late NI, consisting of multiple cellulae, appears to be an intrinsic feature of CMV replication since it seems to be independent of the extent of laboratory adaptation, the virus strain, the intensity of infection, or the cell type.  相似文献
