Many factors trigger migraine attacks. Weather is often reported to be one of the most common migraine triggers. However, there is little scientific evidence about the underlying mechanisms and causes. In our pilot study, we used smartphone apps and a web form to collect around 4,700 migraine messages in Germany between June 2011 and February 2012. Taking interdiurnal temperature changes as an indicator for changes in the prevailing meteorological conditions, our analyses were focused on the relationship between temperature changes and the frequency of occurrence of migraine attacks. Linear trends were fitted to the total number of migraine messages with respect to temperature changes. Statistical and systematic errors were estimated. Both increases and decreases in temperature lead to a significant increase in the number of migraine messages. A temperature increase (decrease) of 5 °C resulted in an increase of 19?±?7 % (24?±?8 %) in the number of migraine messages.  相似文献

Ontogeny of diving and foraging behavior in marine top predators is poorly understood despite its importance in population recruitment. This lack of knowledge is partly due to the difficulties of monitoring juveniles in the wild, which is linked to high mortality early in life. Pinnipeds are good models for studying the development of foraging behaviors because juveniles are large enough to robustly carry tracking devices for many months. Moreover, parental assistance is absent after a juvenile departs for its first foraging trip, minimizing confounding effects of parental input on the development of foraging skills. In this study, we tracked 20 newly weaned juvenile southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Islands for up to 338 days during their first trip at sea following weaning. We used a new generation of satellite relay tags, which allow for the transmission of dive, accelerometer, and location data. We also monitored, at the same time, nine adult females from the colony during their post‐breeding trips, in order to compare diving and foraging behaviors. Juveniles showed a gradual improvement through time in their foraging skills. Like adults females, they remarkably adjusted their swimming effort according to temporal changes in buoyancy (i.e., a proxy of their body condition). They also did not appear to exceed their aerobic physiological diving limits, although dives were constrained by their smaller size compared to adults. Changes in buoyancy appeared to also influence their decision to either keep foraging or return to land, alongside the duration of their haul outs and choice of foraging habitat (oceanic vs. plateau). Further studies are thus needed to better understand how patterns in juveniles survival, and therefore elephant seal populations, might be affected by their changes in foraging skills and changes in their environmental conditions.  相似文献

The serpin plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1), as the primary physiological inhibitor of both urokinase-type (uPA) and tissue-type (tPA) plasminogen activator, plays an important role in the regulation of the fibrinolytic system as well as in extracellular remodeling in both physiological and pathophysiological processes. In plasma as well as in the extracellular matrix PAI-1 binds to vitronectin (Vn), an interaction that affects the function of both proteins. As PAl-1/Vn interaction has a significant regulatory function in fibrinolysis, thrombolysis, and cell adhesion in cancer spread, there is a strong interest in defining the binding sites on PAI-1 and Vn as the basis of a rational design of novel drugs that may modulate PAI-1/Vn-mediated effects. In this minireview, we give an overview on the approaches to define the Vn binding site of PAI-1 and vice versa. Although in the case of PAI-1 the region around alpha-helix E and alpha-helix F of PAI-1 has been demonstrated to be important for its interaction with Vn, the precise location of the Vn-binding region has not completely been resolved. The major high-affinity PAI-1 binding region of Vn is localized within the N-terminal somatomedin B (SMB) domain of Vn. There are indications for at least one other low-affinity PAI-1 binding site in the C-terminal region of Vn, which seems to be involved in the formation of larger PAI-1/Vn complexes.  相似文献

Although several X-ray structures have been determined for the mitochondrial cytochrome (cyt) bc(1) complex, none yet shows the position of the substrate, ubiquinol, in the quinol oxidase (Q(o)) site. In this study, the interaction of molecular oxygen with the reactive intermediate Q(o) semiquinone is used to probe the Q(o) site. It has been known for some time that partial turnover of the cyt bc(1) complex in the presence of antimycin A, a Q(i) site inhibitor, results in accumulation of a semiquinone at the Q(o) site, which can reduce O(2) to superoxide (O(2)(*)(-)). It was more recently shown that myxothiazol, which binds close to the cyt b(L) heme in the proximal Q(o) niche, also induces O(2)(*)(-) production. In this work, it is shown that, in addition to myxothiazol, a number of other proximal Q(o) inhibitors [including (E)-beta-methoxyacrylate-stilbene, mucidin, and famoxadone] also induce O(2)(*)(-) production in the isolated yeast cyt bc(1) complex, at approximately 50% of the V(max) observed in the presence of antimycin A. It is proposed that proximal Q(o) site inhibitors induce O(2)(*)(-) production because they allow formation, but not oxidation, of the semiquinone at the distal niche of the Q(o) site pocket. The apparent K(m) for ubiquinol at the Q(o) site in the presence of proximal Q(o) site inhibitors suggests that the "distal niche" of the Q(o) pocket can act as a fully independent quinol binding and oxidation site. Together with the X-ray structures, these results suggest substrate ubiquinol binds in a fashion similar to that of stigmatellin with H-bonds between H161 of the Rieske iron-sulfur protein and E272 of the cyt b protein. When modeled in this way, mucidin and ubiquinol can bind simultaneously to the Q(o) site with virtually no steric hindrance, whereas progressively bulkier inhibitors exhibit increasing overlap. The fact that partial turnover of the Q(o) site is possible even with bound proximal Q(o) site inhibitors is consistent with the participation of two separate functional Q(o) binding niches, occupied simultaneously or sequentially.  相似文献

Flowers emit a large variety of floral signals that play a fundamental role in the communication of plants with their mutualists and antagonists. We investigated phenotypic selection on floral scent and floral display using the rewarding orchid species Gymnadenia odoratissima. We found positive directional selection on inflorescence size, as well as positive and negative selection on floral scent compounds. Structural equation modeling showed that “active” compounds, i.e. those that were shown in earlier investigations to be detected by pollinator insects, were positively linked to fitness, whereas “non-active” were negatively linked to fitness. Our results suggest that different patterns of selection impact on different scent compounds, which may relate to the functions of compounds for attracting/deterring insects.  相似文献

Anatomical analysis of the red-purple fruit of the Epiphyllum hybrid with red flowers in the course of its development was performed. Main attention was directed towards the special origin of the fruit pulp tissues by fusion of differentiated ovule funiculi cells. This interesting phenomenon in combination with accumulation of mucilage with a high water binding capacity in fruit pulp may prevent the premature dehydratation of fruits and prolong their exploitability. Thorough pigment analysis in the peel and fruit juice from Epiphyllum fruits and Epiphyllum flowers is reported for the first time. While the total betalain content of fruit was comparable with that of some Opuntia and Hylocereus clones, pigment pattern of Epiphyllum flowers may aid in differentiation of hybrids similar to previous reports on Opuntia and Hylocereus fruits. Overall, the results appear to be promising to extend investigations on Epiphyllum both from a botanical view but also with respect to their bioactive substances.  相似文献

Rationale

High rates of recurrent tuberculosis after successful treatment have been reported from different high burden settings in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about the rate of smear-positive tuberculosis after treatment default. In particular, it is not known whether or not treatment defaulters continue to be or become again smear-positive and thus pose a potential for transmission of infection to others.

Objective

To investigate, in a high tuberculosis burden setting, the rate of re-treatment for smear-positive tuberculosis among cases defaulting from standardized treatment compared to successfully treated cases.

Methods

Retrospective cohort study among smear-positive tuberculosis cases treated between 1996 and 2008 in two urban communities in Cape Town, South Africa. Episodes of re-treatment for smear-positive tuberculosis were ascertained via probabilistic record linkage. Survival analysis and Poisson regression were used to compare the rate of smear-positive tuberculosis after treatment default to that after successful treatment.

Results

A total of 2,136 smear-positive tuberculosis cases were included in the study. After treatment default, the rate of re-treatment for smear-positive tuberculosis was 6.86 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.59–8.41) per 100 person-years compared to 2.09 (95% CI: 1.81–2.41) after cure (adjusted Hazard Ratio [aHR]: 3.97; 95% CI: 3.00–5.26). Among defaulters, the rate was inversely associated with treatment duration and sputum conversion prior to defaulting. Smear grade at start of the index treatment episode (Smear3+: aHR 1.61; 95%CI 1.11–2.33) was independently associated with smear-positive tuberculosis re-treatment, regardless of treatment outcome.

Conclusions

In this high-burden setting, there is a high rate of subsequent smear-positive tuberculosis after treatment default. Treatment defaulters are therefore likely to contribute to the pool of infectious source cases in the community. Our findings underscore the importance of preventing treatment default, as a means of successful tuberculosis control in high-burden settings.  相似文献

Our visual system segments images into objects and background. Figure-ground segregation relies on the detection of feature discontinuities that signal boundaries between the figures and the background and on a complementary region-filling process that groups together image regions with similar features. The neuronal mechanisms for these processes are not well understood and it is unknown how they depend on visual attention. We measured neuronal activity in V1 and V4 in a task where monkeys either made an eye movement to texture-defined figures or ignored them. V1 activity predicted the timing and the direction of the saccade if the figures were task relevant. We found that boundary detection is an early process that depends little on attention, whereas region filling occurs later and is facilitated by visual attention, which acts in an object-based manner. Our findings are explained by a model with local, bottom-up computations for boundary detection and feedback processing for region filling.  相似文献
