G6PD Cagliari: A new low activity glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase variant characterized by enhanced intracellular lability

Summary A new variant of human erythrocyte glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), designated G6PD Cagliari, has been characterized. It is associated with severe enzyme deficiency and can be placed in Class 2 of the usual tabulation of G6PD variants. The specific activity of this variant is near normal, while its decay within the circulating erythrocytes is very rapid compared with normals. Genetic analysis of the family of the propositus indicated that the two available females are heterozygotes characterized by extremely unbalanced mosaic phenotypes.     

Effect of rye embryo ribosome nuclease on double-stranded RNA

In extracts obtained by treating rye embryo ribosomes with 0.5 M NH₄Cl, nuclease activity was noted towards double-stranded RNA from virus of Penicillium chrysogenum and towards synthetic poly (A)-poly (U) and poly (I)-poly (C) complexes.     

Cell free synthesis of some storage protein subunits by polyribosomes and RNA isolated from developing seeds of pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Polyribosomes which have template activity in the wheat germ system have been isolated from developing pea seeds. Some of the translation products have identical mobilities to the vicilin and legumin subunits by SDS-PAGE. Certain products were specifically immunoprecipitated with antisera prepared against purified vicilin and legumin fractions. Various RNA fractions including poly A-rich RNA have also been isolated from polyribosomes and shown to direct the synthesis of polyripeptides whose properties are similar to the storage protein subunits. Pollination and Breeding System of Vellozia squamata (Liliales: Velloziaceae): A Species of the Brazilian Cerrados

The pollination biology and breeding system of Vellozia squamata (Velloziaceae), a species of cerrado vegetation in Central Brazil, were studied. V. squamata is unusual in being pollinated by a few, generalist bee species despite having very large flowers, and having a distinctive pulsed flowering phenology. The species is self-incompatible but with a late-acting, post-fertilization rejection mechanism.     

The protein phosphatase inhibitor, okadaic acid, potentiates the stimulatory effect of phorbol ester on phosphatidylcholine synthesis, but not on phospholipid hydrolysis, in fibroblasts.

The potent protein phosphatase inhibitor, okadaic acid, was used to determine the possible role of protein phosphorylation reaction(s) in phorbol ester-induced synthesis and hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho) in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts. Okadaic acid (2 microM) was found to enhance the stimulatory effects of lower concentrations (2.5-25 nM) of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) on PtdCho synthesis, but not on PtdCho hydrolysis, after treatments for 30-60 min. These data support a view that in fibroblasts PMA stimulates only PtdCho synthesis, and not PtdCho hydrolysis, by a protein phosphorylation-dependent mechanism.
