Summary Recent scanning electron microscopic studies confirm the presence of solitary cilia on most epithelial cells along the mammalian nephron and collecting ducts.By transmission electron microscopy we have found that the axonemata of such cilia consist of a maximal number of 9 doublet and no singlet filaments. 10% of the cross-sectioned cilia contain 9 doublets arranged in a peripheral ring (9+0 pattern). 30 % of the cross-sections contain 8 or 7 doublets in peripheral ring and 1 or 2 doublets in the central region (8+1 and 7+2 patterns). Serial sections and goniometer tilt reveal the central doublets to originate as dislodged peripheral doublets. 60% of the sectioned cilia contain filament numbers between 8 and 4. In patterns of 5 and 4 filaments single microtubules predominate.The functional significance of these atypical cilia is discussed.We are indebted to Prof. B. Afzelius and Prof. Th. The isolation of amylin from pancreatic islets has stimulated interest in its potential role in the pathogenesis of type II diabetes mellitus and in its possible physiological roles. Amylin administered intraperitoneally decreased food intake in non-food-deprived and food-deprived diabetic and nondiabetic mice. Amylin also decreased feeding induced by insulin administration without significantly affecting blood glucose levels. Amylin also decreased food intake following intracerebroventricular administration. It is possible that amylin plays a physiological role in appetite regulation and may play a pathophysiological role in the altered appetites seen in some persons with type II diabetes mellitus. 相似文献

Critical point dried and fractured appendicularia of the species Oikopleura dioica have been examined in the scanning electron microscope. The dorsal nerve cord with ganglion cells and peripheral nerve fibres could easily be observed. Thick peripheral nerve fibres leave the nerve cord as bilateral pairs at constant intervals along the tail. Most of these fibres branch from the naked nerve cord, but some evidently originate in ganglion perikarya bulging out from the nerve cord itself. These paired peripheral nerves always have elaborate end-arborizations on the medial surface of the lateral muscle cells. They are accordingly interpreted as motor axons. Some thinner peripheral nerve fibres originate at irregular intervals from both the nerve cord and the ganglion cells. Due to the numerous extracellular fibrils that connect the bilateral layers of the epidermal fins and the muscle cells to each other, these thin nerve fibres can seldom be traced to their termination. A few ones can, however, be traced ventrally between the notochord and the muscle cells and seem to end in singular bulb-like expansions. Clusters of synaptic vesicles are present in transmission electron micrographs of such nerves, and they are accordingly believed to carry efferent impulses. The extracellular fibrils are arranged in a highly ordered pattern with thick bundles crossing the gap between the structures to be interconnected and with numerous radiating insertions on the surface of the tissues. 相似文献

Proteases produced by immune cells have been found to be important components of the immune response to antigen. A protease previously unrecognized as a specific T cell product has been identified which has the gene sequence, serologic crossreactivity, and enzymatic specificity of elastase. T cell elastase, found in combination with the natural elastase inhibitor alpha 1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-protease inhibitor, alpha 1-PI), is produced by both CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, and is found both in a membrane-bound and in a soluble form in murine T cell lines. 相似文献
