An optimization control procedure is developed to describe the function of the human respiratory controller in determination of the respiratory frequency, the expiratory reserve volume, and the physiological dead space volume at all levels of human activity. The required level of alveolar ventilation is considered to have been determined based on the inputs from the peripheral and central chemoreceptors. The proposed procedure describes the mechanical control of breathing in which the excitation signals are adjusted and transferred from the neuron pools in the brainstem to the respiratory muscles to control the rate and depth of breathing. The criterion of minimum average respiratory work rate is used to find the optimal characteristics of respiration. The respiratory frequency, physiologic dead space volume, and expiratory reserve volume are used simultaneously as the optimization variables to minimize the average respiratory work rate. The optimization procedure has been applied by using different airflow patterns at various levels of ventilation. The theoretical results of the study have been compared with the experimental data in exercise taken from the literature. The results show a close agreement between the experimentally measured data and the theoretical values found by the optimization control procedure. The findings attest to the validity of the minimum average work rate criterion and the proposed multivariable optimization procedure compared with other procedures suggested in the literature in control of respiratory mechanics.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess endothelial function, measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), in an inactive extremity (leg) and chronically active extremity (arm) within one subject. Eleven male spinal cord-injured (SCI) individuals and eleven male controls (C) were included. Echo Doppler measurements were performed to measure FMD responses after 10 and 5 min of arterial occlusion of the leg (superficial femoral artery, SFA) and the arm (brachial artery, BA), respectively. A nitroglycerine spray was administered to determine the endothelium independent vasodilatation in the SFA. In the SFA, relative changes in FMD were significantly enhanced in SCI compared with C (SCI: 14.1 +/- 1.3%; C: 9.2 +/- 2.3%), whereas no differences were found in the BA (SCI: 12.5 +/- 2.9%; C: 14.2 +/- 3.3%). Because the FMD response is directly proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus, the FMD response was also expressed relative to the shear rate. No differences between the groups were found for the FMD-to-shear rate ratio in the SFA (SCI:0.061 +/- 0.023%/s(-1); C: 0.049 +/- 0.024%/s(-1)), whereas the FMD-to-shear rate ratio was significantly decreased in the BA of SCI individuals (SCI: 0.037 +/- 0.01%/s(-1); C: 0.061 +/- 0.027%/s(-1)). The relative dilatory response to nitroglycerine did not differ between the groups. (SCI: 15.6 +/- 2.0%; C: 13.4 +/- 2.3%). In conclusion, our results indicate that SCI individuals have a preserved endothelial function in the inactive legs and possibly an attenuated endothelial function in the active arms compared with controls.  相似文献

The prey capture behaviour of the orb-web spider Argiope keyserlingi Karsch was examined experimentally by subjecting spiders to two different feeding regimes (food deprived and food satiated) and three types of prey: Drosophila, blowflies (Lucilia cuprina) and bees (Apis mellifera). The attack behaviour of the spiders was influenced by both their foraging history and the type of prey. Food deprived spiders attacked Drosophila and bees more frequently than food satiated spiders, and food satiated spiders travelled more slowly to any of the prey types than food deprived spiders. Furthermore, Drosophila were never wrapped in silk but only grasped with the chelicerae, whereas both blowflies and bees were always wrapped. This provides experimental confirmation that feeding history affects the decision of orb-web spiders to accept or reject any given prey.  相似文献

Using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, the early migration of juvenile Fasciola hepatica was examined in naive and resistant rats. In naive rats, the migration of flukes to the peritoneal cavity was uneventful. In resistant rats, flukes were rapidly coated with antibody whilst still in the gut lumen and a proportion of the flukes were unable to penetrate the intestinal wall. Those that did penetrate were unharmed as they crossed the gut wall, but on entering the peritoneal cavity they were coated with antibody and host cells including eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and mast cells. Eosinophils were seen degranulating onto the fluke surface, and this appeared to result in the erosion of the tegumental syncytium.  相似文献

Synthetic routes are described to a new series of nitroxide lipid spin labels useful for studying the effects of unsaturation and chain length on motion experienced by nitroxide spin labels in biological membrane systems. The labels incorporate a terminally-located proxyl nitroxide group on a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid chain. Syntheses utilize as the key step either an alkylation of an acetylide anion with a nitroxide iodide or else a Wittig coupling between a nitroxide ylid and an aldehyde. Spin labels described include 17-proxylstearolic acid, 17-peroxyl-stearic acid, 17-proxyloleic acid, 16-proxylheptadecanoic acid, 9-proxyldecanoic acid and two phosphatidyl choline derivatives.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the structure of the melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) precursor reveals that this sequence has been subjected to a higher selection pressure in mammals than in teleosts, suggesting that the structural constraints have not been the same throughout the vertebrate lineage. In contrast, the MCH peptide sequence has been very well conserved in all species. A sensitive and reproducible eel skin assay was developed and allowed us to define the structural features needed for a full MCH bioactivity. It was shown that the minimal structure carrying the critical residues was the same in fishes and in mammals. A pharmacological approach confirmed that MCH receptor activation decreased the cAMP levels in the fish skin, but this effect appeared to be independent from a Galphai protein. We propose that one of the intracellular signaling pathways of the MCH receptor in fish skin is the activation of one or several cellular phosphodiesterases.  相似文献

MHC class I molecules generally present peptides of 8-10 aa long, forming an extended coil in the HLA cleft. Although longer peptides can also bind to class I molecules, they tend to bulge from the cleft and it is not known whether the TCR repertoire has sufficient plasticity to recognize these determinants during the antiviral CTL response. In this study, we show that unrelated individuals infected with EBV generate a significant CTL response directed toward an HLA-B*3501-restricted, 11-mer epitope from the BZLF1 Ag. The 11-mer determinant adopts a highly bulged conformation with seven of the peptide side chains being solvent-exposed and available for TCR interaction. Such a complex potentially creates a structural challenge for TCR corecognition of both HLA-B*3501 and the peptide Ag. Surprisingly, unrelated B*3501 donors recognizing the 11-mer use identical or closely related alphabeta TCR sequences that share particular CDR3 motifs. Within the small number of dominant CTL clonotypes observed, each has discrete fine specificity for the exposed side chain residues of the peptide. The data show that bulged viral peptides are indeed immunogenic but suggest that the highly constrained TCR repertoire reflects a limit to TCR diversity when responding to some unusual MHC peptide ligands.  相似文献

Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore community had a coastal distribution restricted to waters within 3 km from shore. These animals exhibited a cohesive, fission-fusion social organisation, with repeated resightings within the research area, within a larger coastal home range. The offshore community comprised one or more distinct groups, found significantly further offshore (>4 km) than the inshore animals. In addition, dorsal fin scarring patterns differed significantly between inshore and offshore communities with individuals of the offshore community having more distinctly marked dorsal fins. Specifically, almost half of the individuals in the offshore community (48%) had characteristic stereotyped damage to the tip of the dorsal fin, rarely recorded in the inshore community (7%). We propose that this characteristic is likely due to interactions with pelagic fisheries. Social segregation and scarring differences found here indicate that the distinct communities are likely to be spatially and behaviourally segregated. Together with recent genetic evidence of distinct offshore and coastal population structures, this provides evidence for bottlenose dolphin inshore/offshore community differentiation in the northeast Atlantic. We recommend that social communities should be considered as fundamental units for the management and conservation of bottlenose dolphins and their habitat specialisations.  相似文献
