We designed and synthesized a series of haptens to elicit catalytic antibodies with phosphatase activity against nerve agents. The design is based on the novel concept of multiple reactive immunization which aims to afford two or more catalytic residues within the antibody's binding cleft. The hypothesis that phosphorylation of the minor photosystem II antenna complex CP29 (CP34 formation) in Zea mays (cv. Dekalb DK300), under conditions of illumination and low temperature stress, may constitute a protective mechanism against photoinhibition, has been investigated. It is demonstrated that illumination at low temperature induces a marked increase in reversible non‐photochemical quenching yield of chlorophyll fluorescence, together with CP34 formation. These two parameters, however, are not related as CP34 dephosphorylates to CP29 in the dark, with a half‐time of about 10 min, while the enhanced non‐photochemical quenching yield is stable for many hours. The enhanced non‐photochemical quenching yield seems to correlate with zeaxanthin formation. The influence of CP34 formation on photoinhibition was also directly investigated. No measurable effect on this parameter could be observed after treatment with high light. It is concluded that CP34 is probably not directly involved in photoprotective processes.  相似文献

Little is known about the vegetation and fire history of Sardinia, and especially the long-term history of the thermo-Mediterranean belt that encompasses its entire coastal lowlands. A new sedimentary record from a coastal lake based on pollen, spores, macrofossils and microscopic charcoal analysis is used to reconstruct the vegetation and fire history in north-eastern Sardinia. During the mid-Holocene (c. 8,100–5,300 cal bp), the vegetation around Stagno di Sa Curcurica was characterised by dense Erica scoparia and E. arborea stands, which were favoured by high fire activity. Fire incidence declined and evergreen broadleaved forests of Quercus ilex expanded at the beginning of the late Holocene. We relate the observed vegetation and fire dynamics to climatic change, specifically moister and cooler summers and drier and milder winters after 5,300 cal bp. Agricultural activities occurred since the Neolithic and intensified after c. 7,000 cal bp. Around 2,750 cal bp, a further decline of fire incidence and Erica communities occurred, while Quercus ilex expanded and open-land communities became more abundant. This vegetation shift coincided with the historically documented beginning of Phoenician period, which was followed by Punic and Roman civilizations in Sardinia. The vegetational change at around 2,750 cal bp was possibly advantaged by a further shift to moister and cooler summers and drier and milder winters. Triggers for climate changes at 5,300 and 2,750 cal bp may have been gradual, orbitally-induced changes in summer and winter insolation, as well as centennial-scale atmospheric reorganizations. Open evergreen broadleaved forests persisted until the twentieth century, when they were partly substituted by widespread artificial pine plantations. Our results imply that highly flammable Erica vegetation, as reconstructed for the mid-Holocene, could re-emerge as a dominant vegetation type due to increasing drought and fire, as anticipated under global change conditions.  相似文献

Knox and Parson have objected to our previous conclusion on possible negative entropy production during primary photochemistry, i.e., from photon absorption to primary charge separation, by considering a pigment system in which primary photochemistry is not specifically considered. This approach does not address our proposal. They suggest that when a pigment absorbs light and passes to an excited state, its entropy increases by hν/T. This point is discussed in two ways: (i) from considerations based on the energy gap law for excited state relaxation; (ii) using classical thermodynamics, in which free energy is introduced into the pigment (antenna) system by photon absorption. Both approaches lead us to conclude that the excited state and the ground state are isoentropic, in disagreement with Knox and Parson. A discussion on total entropy changes specifically during the charge separation process itself indicates that this process may be almost isoentropic and thus our conclusions on possible negentropy production associated with the sequence of reactions which go from light absorption to the first primary charge separation event, due to its very high thermodynamic efficiency, remain unchanged.  相似文献
