Research into dolphin swimming historically was guided by false assumptions pertaining to maximum speed. Accurate measurements on swimming speed and duration of effort of free-ranging dolphins are rare. To examine the variance of maximum swimming speeds, nearly 2,000 speed measurements were obtained for both captive and free-ranging dolphins, including Tursiops truncatus, Pseudorca crassidens, Delphinus capensis , and Delphinus delpbis . Measurements were made from videotapes of dolphins trained to swim fast around a large pool or jumping to a maximum height, videotapes of captured wild dolphins immediately after release, and sequential aerial photographs of a school of free-ranging dolphins startled by a passing airplane. Maximum horizontal speeds for trained animals were 8.2 m/sec for T. truncatus , 8.0 m/sec for D. delphis , and 8.0 m/sec for P. crassidens . Maximum speeds for T. truncatus swimming upwards, prior to vertical leaps ranged from 8.2 to 11.2 m/sec. Wild T. truncatus demonstrated a maximum speed of 5.7 m/sec. Maximum swimming speed of free-ranging D. capensis responding to multiple passes by a low flying airplane was 6.7 m/sec. There was no evidence that the freeranging dolphins have superior swimming capabilities to captive animals. The results of this study imply that realistic maximum swimming speeds for dolphins are lower than previous reports which were based on sparse data and imprecise measurement techniques.  相似文献

In an institution for the mentally retarded, an uncontrolled study was made on the effects of d-amphetamine, d-amphetamine followed by trifluoperazine, and of combined d-amphetamine and trifluoperazine on stuttering. Of 28 patients to whom d-amphetamine was given, 14 showed improvement after one month''s treatment. Eight more showed improvement when trifluoperazine was given for one month to those who did not improve on d-amphetamine. In many cases, improvement was sustained at least six months after treatment was discontinued.Treatment with d-amphetamine was apparently more effective in patients with functional than with organic retardation.  相似文献

Pinnipeds are amphibious mammals with flippers, which function for both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion. Evolution of the flippers has placed constraints on the terrestrial locomotion of phocid seals. The detailed kinematics of terrestrial locomotion of gray (Halichoerus grypus) and harbor (Phoca vitulina) seals was studied in captivity and in the wild using video analysis. The seals exhibited dorsoventral undulations with the chest and pelvis serving as the main contact points. An anteriorly directed wave produced by spinal flexion aided in lifting the chest off the ground as the fore flippers were retracted to pull the body forward. The highest length‐specific speeds recorded were 1.02 BL/s for a gray seal in captivity and 1.38 BL/s for a harbor seal in the wild. The frequency and amplitude of spinal movement increased directly with speed, but the duty factor remained constant. Substrate did not influence the kinematics except for differences due to moving up or down slopes. The highly aquatic nature of phocids seals has restricted them to locomote on land primarily using spinal flexion, which can limit performance in speed and duration.  相似文献

Deoxycholate C. diphtheriae extract was separated into fractions differing in the size of their molecules. Correlation between the molecular weight of each fraction, its specific protein content and its immunogenicity was observed. The most effective electrical stimulus to the calf muscles which prevents stasis in the soleal veins during operation was determined. Seventeen alkaliphilic halomonads were examined for the presence of plasmids. Of these, eight strains harbored one or more from 5.3 to 33 kb in size, the first plasmids to be identified from an alkaliphilic halomonad source. Restriction and hybridization analysis revealed three strains that maintained an identical 5.9-kb plasmid which we named pAH1, two that had an identical 33-kb plasmid, and three others, of which one carried two plasmids of 5.3 and 15 kb, the former being designated pAH2. The two final strains maintained plasmids of 15 and 20.5 kb. Restriction mapping of both pAH1 and pAH2 indicated that they have a number of unique restriction sites and are of a small enough size to make them suitable for vector construction.  相似文献
