Dolphins are well known for their complex social and foraging behaviours. Direct underwater observations of wild dolphin feeding behaviour however are rare. At mass spawning aggregations of giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) in the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia, a wild female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) was observed and recorded repeatedly catching, killing and preparing cuttlefish for consumption using a specific and ordered sequence of behaviours. Cuttlefish were herded to a sand substrate, pinned to the seafloor, killed by downward thrust, raised mid-water and beaten by the dolphin with its snout until the ink was released and drained. The deceased cuttlefish was then returned to the seafloor, inverted and forced along the sand substrate in order to strip the thin dorsal layer of skin off the mantle, thus releasing the buoyant calcareous cuttlebone. This stepped behavioural sequence significantly improves prey quality through 1) removal of the ink (with constituent melanin and tyrosine), and 2) the calcareous cuttlebone. Observations of foraging dolphin pods from above-water at this site (including the surfacing of intact clean cuttlebones) suggest that some or all of this prey handling sequence may be used widely by dolphins in the region. Aspects of the unique mass spawning aggregations of giant cuttlefish in this region of South Australia may have contributed to the evolution of this behaviour through both high abundances of spawning and weakened post-spawning cuttlefish in a small area (>10,000 animals on several kilometres of narrow rocky reef), as well as potential long-term and regular visitation by dolphin pods to this site.  相似文献

The zwitterionic phospho-forms phosphoethanolamine and phosphocholine are recognized as influential and important substituents of pathogen cell surfaces. PilE, the major pilin subunit protein of the type IV pilus (Tfp) colonization factor of Neisseria gonorrhoeae undergoes unique, post-translational modifications with these moieties. These phospho-form modifications have been shown to be O-linked alternately to a specific, conserved serine residue of PilE. However, the enzymes and precursors involved in their addition are unknown, and the full spectrum of PilE post-translational modifications has yet to be defined. Here, an intact protein-based mass spectrometric approach was integrated with bioinformatics and reverse genetics to address these matters. Specifically we show that a protein limited in its distribution to pathogenic Neisseria species and structurally related to enzymes implicated in phosphoethanolamine modification of lipopolysaccharide is necessary for PilE covalent modification with phosphoethanolamine and phosphocholine. These findings strongly suggest that protein phospho-form modification is mechanistically similar to processes underlying analogous modifications of prokaryotic saccharolipid glycans. We also show that PilE undergoes multisite and hierarchical phospho-form modifications and that the stoichiometries of site occupancy can be influenced by PilE primary structure and the abundance of the pilin-like protein PilV. Together, these findings have important implications for the structure and antigenicity of PilE.  相似文献

The Ciona intestinalis genome harbors three insulin-like genes: INS-L1, -L2 and -L3. Conserved synteny between the Ciona-human genomes predicts that Ciona INS-Ls are orthologous to the vertebrate insulin-relaxin family, but this relation cannot be inferred from molecular phylogeny. A conserved protein core with six cysteines; typical arrangement of B-, C- and A-protein domains; pro-protein maturation mode; and putative insulin receptor-binding sites were identified in Ciona INS-L proteins. ESTs used to assemble exonic sequences of INS-Ls combined with qRT-PCR analysis provided evidence that the predicted genes are expressed in the developing and adult Ciona. Our results support that Ciona INS-L1 is orthologous to the vertebrate insulin-like/relaxin genes, INS-L2 to insulin genes and INS-L3 to IGF genes. Our analysis also implies that the insulin-like/relaxin ancestor switched receptor type from tyrosine kinase- to GPCR-type, whereas insulin-IGF subfamily retained the tyrosine kinase-type of receptor. We propose that this receptor-switch occurred after the time when urochordates branched from the common chordate lineage, but before the two genome-duplications at the root of the vertebrates.  相似文献

Sex is evolutionarily more costly than parthenogenesis, evolutionary ecologists therefore wonder why sex is much more frequent than parthenogenesis in the majority of animal lineages. Intriguingly, parthenogenetic individuals and species are as common as or even more common than sexuals in some major and putative ancient animal lineages such as oribatid mites and rotifers. Here, we analyzed oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida) as a model group because these mites are ancient (early Paleozoic), widely distributed around the globe, and include a high number of parthenogenetic species, which often co‐exist with sexual oribatid mite species. There is evidence that the reproductive mode is phylogenetically conserved in oribatid mites, which makes them an ideal model to test hypotheses on the relationship between reproductive mode and species'' ecological strategies. We used oribatid mites to test the frozen niche variation hypothesis; we hypothesized that parthenogenetic oribatid mites occupy narrow specialized ecological niches. We used the geographic range of species as a proxy for specialization as specialized species typically do have narrower geographic ranges than generalistic species. After correcting for phylogenetic signal in reproductive mode and demonstrating that geographic range size has no phylogenetic signal, we found that parthenogenetic lineages have a higher probability to have broader geographic ranges than sexual species arguing against the frozen niche variation hypothesis. Rather, the results suggest that parthenogenetic oribatid mite species are more generalistic than sexual species supporting the general‐purpose genotype hypothesis. The reason why parthenogenetic oribatid mite species are generalists with wide geographic range sizes might be that they are of ancient origin reflecting that they adapted to varying environmental conditions during evolutionary history. Overall, our findings indicate that parthenogenetic oribatid mite species possess a widely adapted general‐purpose genotype and therefore might be viewed as “Jack‐of‐all‐trades.”  相似文献

Leaf area index (LAI) analysis of deciduous forest trees is usually restricted to seasonal monitoring involving the assessment of distinct leaf phenological stages within definite time intervals of the year. However, continuous LAI monitoring that includes entire leaf periods is necessary to define the ecophysiological characteristics of deciduous trees. Therefore, this study investigated the intra-annual cycle of the LAI for a Platanus orientalis L. stand in the Bart?n watershed of Turkey. A complete cycle involves three periods: foliation, stable, and defoliation. The foliation period comprises budburst, leaf emergence and flushing sessions, whereas the defoliation period consists of leaf senescence and leaf fall sessions. The stable period is in between these two periods when LAI values are at a climax around maximum. Eight points were determined in the field for the analysis of LAI by a hemispherical photography technique. Over a relatively frequent schedule, photographs were taken almost weekly during the foliation period. Both weekly and approximate monthly photographs were applied during the stable period. Finally, near-monthly photographs were taken for the defoliation period. The foliation period lasted for about 1.5 months from mid-April to May with the mean LAI reaching from 0.16 up to 2.38. Mean LAI was between 2.38 and 2.47 for a stable period over 2 months (June and July). For the defoliation period, mean LAI dropped from 2.42 down to 0.35 over 5 months from August to December. The total foliated period was more than 8 months, which is relatively long for a temperate forest. In addition, correlations between mean LAI and maximum, mean and minimum temperatures were highly significant (P < 0.01) with coefficients (r) of 0.79, 0.90 and 0.93, respectively. By describing the intra-annual LAI pattern, this study fills a gap in the literature on the phenology of Platanus orientalis L.  相似文献
