Summary We have studied the effects of cocultivation on the frequency of mitomycin C (MMC)-induced chromosomal aberrations. This was carried out by cocultivating Fanconi anemia (FA) cells from the genetic complementation groups A and B with both normal mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells and the derived FA-like mutant cells, MCN-151 and MCE-50, assigned to complementation groups I and II, respectively. The results show a partial complementation of the defect (i.e. a reduction in the frequency of chromosomal aberration) in FA group A cells cocultured with normal or group II mouse cells, and a partial correction of mouse group I cells cocultived with normal or FA group B human cells. No reciprocal effects were observed between FA group A cells and mouse group I mutant cells; the frequencies of MMC-induced chromosomal aberrations in these cells remained unchanged by cocultivation. Moreover, no complementation was observed for both FA group B cells and mouse group II cells, after cocultivation with normal cells of either mouse or human origin. This implies that a diffusible factor released by normal human and mouse cells, and by FA group B and mouse group II mutant cells, can correct at least in part the chromosomal defect of FA group A and mouse group I mutant cells. With normal human or mouse cells, the frequency of chromosomal breakage after cocultivation remains the same as that observed in non-cocultived cells. Elephant seals are known from long-term behavioral studies tobe highly polygynous and to show high variance in reproductivesuccess among males. However, genetic studies have determinedthat the level of polygyny varies between the closely relatednorthern and southern elephant seals. In the present study,we investigate paternal success at the Sea Lion Island southernelephant seal colony in the Falkland Islands by using both behavioralmeasures and genetic markers. We find that the average successof harem holding males at Sea Lion Island is significantly higherthan both the northern species and the nearby southern elephantseal population at Punta Delgada. We compare genetic paternitywith various behavioral indices of male mating success, andwe find that the behavioral measures provide a good estimateof the variance in male reproductive success. Only 28.2% ofmales achieved paternities, and among these, harem holders accountedfor 89.6%. We discuss the implications of our results in thecontext of the demographic and physical environment. Specifically,a comparatively high variance in resource holding potentialamong males, differences in male social behavior, and a smalltidal cycle limiting peripheral male access during female departurefrom the harem at this colony may be important factors leadingto the comparatively high variance in male reproductive successat Sea Lion Island. 相似文献

The present investigation aimed to establish whether noncompetitive rock climbing fulfills sports medicine recommendations for maintaining a good level of aerobic fitness. The physiological profile of 13 rock climbers, 8 men (age, 43 +/- 8 years) and 5 women (age, 31 +/- 8 years) was assessed by means of laboratory tests. Maximal aerobic power (VO2peak) and ventilatory threshold (VT) were assessed using a cycloergometer incremental test. During outdoor rock face climbing, VO2 and heart rate (HR) were measured with a portable metabolimeter and the relative steady-state values (VO2 and HR during rock climbing) were computed. Blood lactate was measured during recovery. All data are presented as mean +/- SD. VO2 was 39.1 +/- 4.3 mL.kg.min in men and 39.7 +/- 5 mL.kg.min in women, while VT was 29.4 +/- 3.0 mL.kg.min in men and 28.8 +/- 4.6 mL.kg.min in women. The VO2 during rock climbing was 28.3 +/- 1.5 mL.kg.min in men and 27.5 +/- 3.7 mL.kg.min in women. The HR during rock climbing was 144 +/- 16 b.min in men and 164 +/- 13 b.min in women. The aerobic profile was classified from excellent to superior in accordance with the standards of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The exercise intensity (VO2 during rock climbing expressed as a percentage of VO2peak) was 70 +/- 6% in men and 72 +/- 8% in women. Moreover, the energy expenditure was 1000-1500 kcal per week. In conclusion, noncompetitive rock climbing has proved to be a typical aerobic activity. The intensity of exercise is comparable to that recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine to maintain good cardiorespiratory fitness. 相似文献

Abstract. Question: Which are the structural attributes and the history of old‐growth Fagus forest in Mediterranean montane environments? What are the processes underlying their structural organization? Are these forests stable in time and how does spatial scale affect our assessment of stability? How do these forests compare to other temperate deciduous old‐growth forests? Location: 1600–1850 m a.s.l., Fagus forest near the tree line, central Apennines, Italy. Methods: An old‐growth Fagus forest was studied following historical, structural and dendroecological approaches. History of forest cover changes was analysed using aerial photographs taken in 1945, 1954, 1985 and 1994. The structural analysis was carried out in the primary old‐growth portion of the forest using 18 circular and two rectangular plots. Dendroecological analyses were conducted on 32 dominant or co‐dominant trees. Results: These primary old‐growth Fagus remnants consist of four patches that escaped logging after World War II. Both living and dead tree components are within the range of structural attributes recognized for old‐growth in temperate biomes. Dendroecological analyses revealed the roles of disturbance, competition and climate in structuring the forest. We also identified a persistent Fagus community in which gap‐phase regeneration has led to a mono‐specific multi‐aged stand at spatial scales of a few hectares, characterized by a rotated‐sigmoid diameter distribution. Conclusion: Even at the relatively small spatial scale of this study, high‐elevation Apennine Fagus forests can maintain structural characteristics consistent with those of old‐growth temperate forests. Leaf glucosinolates of 42 Diplotaxis and 21 Eruca accessions were studied. Total content ranged from 0.25 to more than 70 g kg(-1) dry wt. The 13 clusters, defined on the basis of glucosinolate composition, belonged to two glucosinolate-rich groups, characterised by the prevalence of a single component, and one low-glucosinolate group, with a profile not dominated by any individual component. A sinigrin-rich cluster (D. ibicensis, D. berthautii, D. ilorcitana, D. siettiana, D. tenuisiliqua, D. brevisiliqua, and D. virgata) and a gluconapin-rich cluster (D. catholica, D.siifolia, D. virgata, and D. ollivieri) included all the species previously classified in the nigra phylogenetic lineage. D. virgata was confirmed to be a critical taxon, with one accession slightly diverging from the others. D. siifolia subsp. vicentina was separated from the others in a glucobrassicin-rich cluster. D. harra, a rather isolated representative of sub-genus Hesperidium, clustered together D. assurgens in a sinalbin-rich cluster. Another well defined cluster was represented by D. brachycarpa (gluconasturtin). The two sub-species of D. erucoides were well differentiated by their glucosinolate profile. The low glucosinolate species: D. tenuifolia, D. viminea, D. cretacea, D. muralis (subgenus Diplotaxis), and E. vesicaria, all previously included in the rapa/oleracea lineage, belonged to seven less defined clusters, mainly differing on the presence/absence or the relative abundance of some components (glucoraphanin, glucolepidin, 4-hydroxy-glucobrassicin, 4-phenylbutyl gls, glucoerucin and neoglucobrassicin). The data support previous taxonomic works. Glucosinolate-rich taxa, with well characterised profiles may be suitable for industrial uses, whereas the variability of edible D. tenuifolia and E. vesicaria may represent a basis for breeding horticultural types. 相似文献
