Loss in seed yield and therefore decrease in plant fitness due to simultaneous attacks by multiple herbivores is not necessarily additive, as demonstrated in evolutionary studies on wild plants. However, it is not clear how this transfers to crop plants that grow in very different conditions compared to wild plants. Nevertheless, loss in crop seed yield caused by any single pest is most often studied in isolation although crop plants are attacked by many pests that can cause substantial yield losses. This is especially important for crops able to compensate and even overcompensate for the damage. We investigated the interactive impacts on crop yield of four insect pests attacking different plant parts at different times during the cropping season. In 15 oilseed rape fields in Sweden, we estimated the damage caused by seed and stem weevils, pollen beetles, and pod midges. Pest pressure varied drastically among fields with very low correlation among pests, allowing us to explore interactive impacts on yield from attacks by multiple species. The plant damage caused by each pest species individually had, as expected, either no, or a negative impact on seed yield and the strongest negative effect was caused by pollen beetles. However, seed yield increased when plant damage caused by both seed and stem weevils was high, presumably due to the joint plant compensatory reaction to insect attack leading to overcompensation. Hence, attacks by several pests can change the impact on yield of individual pest species. Economic thresholds based on single species, on which pest management decisions currently rely, may therefore result in economically suboptimal choices being made and unnecessary excessive use of insecticides.  相似文献

Exposure of heparinized human venous blood that was diluted with a phosphate buffer to a combination of a static magnetic field (42 µT) and a weak (amplitude range 108–3440 nT) variable low-frequency (1, 4.4, and 16.5 Hz, ratio of amplitudes 6: 1: 1.6, respectively) magnetic field collinear to the static magnetic field enhanced blood chemiluminescence that was induced by the addition of luminol or lucigenin at physiological temperature. The free-radical scavenger edaravone (MCI-186) and apocynin, an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, reduced the intensity of blood chemiluminescence and alleviated the effects of the magnetic fields.  相似文献

Plant secretome comprises dozens of secreted proteins. However, little is known about the composition of the whole secreted peptide pools and the proteases responsible for the generation of the peptide pools. The majority of studies focus on target detection and characterization of specific plant peptide hormones. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the whole extracellular peptidome, using moss Physcomitrella patens as a model. Hundreds of modified and unmodified endogenous peptides that originated from functional and nonfunctional protein precursors were identified. The plant proteases responsible for shaping the pool of endogenous peptides were predicted. Salicylic acid (SA) influenced peptide production in the secretome. The proteasome activity was altered upon SA treatment, thereby influencing the composition of the peptide pools. These results shed more light on the role of proteases and posttranslational modification in the “active management” of the extracellular peptide pool in response to stress conditions. It also identifies a list of potential peptide hormones in the moss secretome for further analysis.  相似文献

We studied how short-term preexposure of the thymus zone in male outbred NMRI mice to helium-neon laser light (632.8 nm, 0.2 mW/cm2) affects the activity of cells of the immune system under acute toxic stress. The stress was modeled by introducing a bacterial lipopolysaccharide that significantly enhanced the production of a number of cytokines in macrophages: interleukins 1α, 1β, 6, and 10, and tumor necrosis factor TNF-α. Single exposure of healthy mice to laser light did not cause any significant change in the production of cytokines and nitric oxide in cells but increased the production of the heat shock proteins HSP25, HSP70, and HSP90. Nonetheless, if mice were exposed to red light before inducing toxic stress, then the production of almost all the cytokines studied and nitric oxide was noticeably normalized. Moreover, the production of the heat shock proteins studied was also normalized. Thus, preexposure of a small region of the animal skin surface to laser light markedly decreased the toxic effect of lipopolysaccharide.  相似文献

The effect of recombinant LIF cytokine (Leukemia inhibitory factor) on the isolated mouse embryos at the stages of middle and late blastocyst has been investigated. We have demonstrated here that this agent is necessary in vitro at the stage of normal trophoblast formation after the blastocysts hatch from zona pellucida. This cytokine (10 ng/ml) caused intensification of adhesion and proliferative activity of the trophoblast cells. This is important for intercellular interactions with endometrium and for invasion of embryos into the uterus. The recombinant LIF insignificantly influenced cells of the inner cell mass.  相似文献

It was shown that weak combined magnetic fields (constant field 25-130 microT; variable field 0.01-0.2 microT; the range of effective frequencies of the alternating component 1-10 Hz) substantially increase the rate of hydrolysis of some proteins and peptides (eight various sequences). The concentration dependence of the dynamics of the process and the dependence of the magnitude of the effect on the parameters of the magnetic field. It was found that: (1) the effect is transmitted through a solvent preliminarily treated by magnetic fields and (2) the effect occurs in the presence of inhibitors of proteases and enzymes inactivating peroxides (catalase and horse radish peroxidase with substrate).  相似文献

The regularities of changes in factors of 137Cs transfer to natural and sown grasses in the longterm period after the Chernobyl accident are described. The dynamics of changes in factors of 137Cs transfer to sown grasses over the period of 1993 to 1999 was of a non-uniform character. On average, these transfer factors (TF) tended to decrease in that period. A significant tendency for an increase in TF to sown grasses was noted for 1997-1999. The half-life periods of decrease in TF to natural grasses in the period 1993-1999 were shown to be ranged from 4.6 to 24.6 years. It was demonstrated that the differences in the TF dynamics between sown and natural grasses were related to the peculiarities of their development and application of countermeasures.  相似文献

Telomeres, DNA-protein structures, are important elements of the eukaryotic chromosome. Telomeric regions of the majority of higher plants contain heptanucleotides TTTAGGG arranged into a tandem repeat. However, some taxa have no such repeats. These are some species of lilies (Lilium) and onions (Allium). For example, terminal regions of chromosomes of Spanish onion (Allium fistulosum) contain satellite DNA whose unit repeats are 380 bp in length, and the short arm of its chromosome 8 contains rDNA repeats. This study deals with the terminal heterochromatin and organization of the satellite repeat in A. fistulosum. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to locate the satellite DNA on chromosomes and on extended DNA of A. fistulosum. Nonsatellite DNA was found in the structure of telomeric repeat. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern hybridization were used for analysis of terminal heterochromatin. Various rearrangements were found in the satellite repeat. The roles of retrotransposones and microsatellites in the formation of terminal heterochromatin are discussed.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the strategy of countermeasures aimed at reducing exposure doses to the rural population is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed system of countermeasures assessed by criteria such as reduction factor of exposure doses and cost of averted doses. Costs of countermeasures in the rural settlements located in the affected zone are calculated for a long term after the Chernobyl NPP accident.  相似文献
