1. The bile salts of three frog species of the genus Ptychadena and of Rana catesbeiana have been compared with those of their tadpoles. For R. catesbeiana comparison was made of the bile salts in at least ten of the recognized stages of tadpole metamorphosis. 2. In all cases, adult bile salts were more complex than those of the tadpoles. 3. In R. catesbeiana after stage 18, 26-deoxy-5 alpha-ranol was hydroxylated to form 5 alpha-ranol (27-nor-5 alpha-cholestane-3 alpha, 7 alpha, 12 alpha, 24 xi, 26-pentol) and at least two other bile alcohols appeared in solvolysed bile salts. 4. Tadpole bile salts were not found to be biochemically more primitive than those of fully metamorphosed frogs; in some, but not all, cases tadpole bile alcohols could be regarded as biochemical precursors of those in the adult frogs. 5. Summary Synaptic ribbons, functionally enigmatic structures of mammalian pinealocytes, were studied during the postnatal development of the pineal gland in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). On day 4 post partum, synaptic ribbons appear in cells that have already started to differentiate into pinealocytes. Between days 4 and 9, an increase in the number of synaptic ribbons occurs, concomitant with the continuing differentiation of the pineal tissue. Between days 9 and 16, when differentiation of this tissue is almost completed, the number of synaptic ribbons decreases and approaches that characteristic of the adult pineal gland. During development, the synaptic ribbons increase in length, and dense core vesicles are frequently found in the vicinity of these structures. It is assumed that a functional relationship exists between dense core vesicles and the synaptic ribbons, which are considered to be engaged in a certain form of secretory activity of the mammalian pineal gland.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 相似文献

We have investigated the effect of some metabolic drugs, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), sodium azide (NaN3), on the photobehavior of single cells of Euglena gracilis, in order to clarify the relevance of different metabolic pathways in the process of photoperception and sensory transduction in this alga. The results obtained show that the photophobic response of Euglena is not affected by the action of these drugs. This suggests that neither the photosynthetic process nor oxidative phosphorylation play a significant role in the phenomenon of photosensory transduction in Euglena.List of Abbreviations DNP

Summary Structures identified as subsurface cisterns (SSC's) were found in neurons of the paraventricular nuclei of the rat hypothalamus. They appeared as cytoplasmic organelles consisting most often of stacks of parallel cisterns apposed to the neuronal plasmalemma. These SSC's were located in the interneurons of the parvocellular system, but not in neurosecretory cells and glial cells. SSC's were seen at zones of cytoplasm apposed to neuronal or glial cell processes, showing in some instances specific relationships with synaptic areas.The morphological features of these SSC's are described, and their possible functional significance is briefly discussed. 相似文献

Summary Changes in the distribution of the in vitro uptake of 125I-HCG by the ovaries of adult rats were examined histochemically throughout the estrous cycle.Only in follicles wider than 500 m, occurring mainly at diestrus and proestrus, could granulosa cells bind the labelled hormone. The labelling increased with follicular size and decreased in intensity from the peripheral granulosa cells inwards. No uptake occurred in the oocytes, in the cells of the cumulus oophorus nor in the granulosa cells of the atretic follicles.The binding capacity of the newly-formed corpora lutea of estrus was less than that of preovulatory follicles. The uptake of 125I-HCG by corpora lutea during the first cycle reached its maximum at diestrus but fell sharply by proestrus. The uptake was patchy in the corpora lutea of the second cycle and not significant in the older ones.The uptake of 125I-HCG by thecae increased with follicular size and was greater in the thecae of atretic follicles than in the thecae of growing follicles of like size. There was a greater uptake in the last formed interstitial tissue than there was in older tissue.At proestrus, the uptake of 125I-HCG was unaffected by the LH surge at 18.00h but had decreased slightly at 24.00 h.The implications of these data in relation to the regulation of receptor sites, is discussed. 相似文献

The thermal transition of poly[d(A-r5U)] polydeoxynucleotides (where r was a hydrogen atom, or a methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl or n-pentyl group) was studied by measuring the derivative melting profiles of the polymers in the range of 0.01--0.36 M K+, at pH 6.8. According to the Tm values, polydeoxynucleotide analogues show lower thermal stability than poly[d(A-T)] at any counterion concentration applied. At a given salt concentration, Tm of the alkyl analogues decreased as the number of carbon atoms (n) in the r substituent of poly[d(A-r5U)] increased. 1/Tm plotted against against 1/n yielded a linear relationship. Cooperativity of the melting of all poly[d(A--U)] analogues decreased with the increase of salt concentration in the solution. This change depended again on 5-substitution of the uracil moiety of poly[d(A-U)]. Smallest decrease was observed in the case of poly[d(A--U)] whereas largest decrease was shown by poly[d(A-pe5U)] (pe=pentyl group). 相似文献

Summary Activities of DNA polymerases and RNA polymerases were studied by autoradiographic methods in growing and differentiating root cortex cells ofZea mays — a species in which endomitosis occurs — andTulipa kaufmanniana — in which this process does not occur. InTulipa kaufmanniana, the highest activity of DNA polymerase appears in the nuclei of meristematic zone during the S phase of the cell cycle. InZea mays, endomitotic replication of DNA occurs in all growth and differentiation zones and the activity of DNA polymerase in the nuclei is similar to that in the meristematic zone. In both species, nuclear RNA synthesis, measured with3H uridine incorporation, is highest in the meristematic zone and declines steadily with development. Activity of nuclear RNA polymerase is present in all developmental zones in both species and is similar to that in the meristematic zone.3H uridine incorporation into nucleoli decreases markedly in both species, whereas the activity of nucleolar RNA polymerase remains at a high level in all root segments inZea mays and decreases slightly inTulipa kaufmanniana.It is argued that the differences between the incorporation of3H uridine and that or3H UMP may be caused by a reduction of the pool of endogenous ribonucleoside triphosphates. Phosphoethanolaminetransferase of high specific activity was solubilized from rat liver microsomes with the non-ionic detergent octyl glucoside. The solubilization method is fast and simple, allowing for processing of large amounts of material. The solubilized enzyme is stable. It contains virtually no phosphocholinetransferase activity. A preliminary characterization of the enzyme, with both diacyl- and alkylacyl-glycerol as substrate, is given.
