Résumé Le marquage isotopique (HT18O) des larves agées de 3e et de 4e stades de la coccinelle aphidiphageS. 11notata Schneider permet d'estimer la consommation alimentaire totale de chacun de ces 2 stades. Par comparaison avec une méthode d'estimation de la consommation alimentaire basée sur la pesée des proies, le marquage isotopique donne des résultats excellents chez les larves de dernier stade et elle est sans doute utilisable pour des mesures comparatives chez les larves de 3e stade. Les avantages de cette méthode, dont le plus important est assurément son indépendance vis-à-vis de la nature de l'aliment ingéré par les larves, ses quelques inconvénients et également les différentes possibilités de son utilisation (alimentation artificielle, études sur la physiologie alimentaire, etc.) sont discutés. L'application de cette méthode à des larves L3 et L5 maintenues au laboratoire dans des conditions am biantes constantes, en présence de populations aphidiennes monospécifiques mais hétérogènes quant à leur stade de développement, nous a permis de vérifier à l'échelle individuelle que le gain de poids constitue effectivement un critère d'estimation de la consommation alimentaire totale correspondante. Dans ce cas également, les meilleurs résultats sont obtenus chez les larves du dernier stade.
Summary The isotopic labeling (HT18O) of aged larvae (3rd and 4th instars) of the aphidophagous ladybeetleS. iinotata allows the total food consumption of both stages to be estimated. From the comparison with a method of consumption estimation based on weighing the prey, the isotopic labeling gives good results in the 4th stage larvae and is und oubtedly useful for comparative determination in 3rd stage larvae. The advantages of the method which does not depend on the kind of food ingested, the few drawbacks and the different possibilities of its use (artificial food, physiological studies) are discussed. This method was applied to 3rd and 4th stages larvae growing in the laboratory (in constant ambiant conditions) and fed with aphids of one species in different stages of development. It allowed to test, in each individual, the validity of measuring the total food consumption through the gain of weight of the larvae. Again, in this case the best results were obtained in the 4th stage larvae.

Hepatic endothelial lipase (HEL) activity is as high in the neonatal (1-day old) rat liver as in adults. Most of the HEL activity is located at the capillaries since 75% of the total activity is released by heparin or collagenase perfusion. The residual activity (non-releasable) is located in hepatocytes and not in hemopoietic cells, which are the major cell type in neonatal liver. Per mg of protein, the HEL activity is 50% higher in neonatal than in adult hepatocytes. We suggest that neonatal hepatocytes have an increased capacity to synthesize and secrete HEL activity, so maintaining a high activity in the whole organ. it might contribute to the hepatic uptake of cholesterol from circulating lipoproteins, in a period in which endogenous cholesterol synthesis is known to be inhibited in the liver.  相似文献

Artificial insemination was carried out on three adult captive Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Oestrus in these animals was detected by behavioural observations and by the rise in urinary oestrogen metabolites. Semen was collected from a mature male by electroejaculation. Changes in the quality of semen and the size of the testes indicated a seasonal fluctuation in sperm production. Spermatozoa were capable of penetrating zona-free hamster oocytes and remained viable for up to five days at 15–20°C in a modified Tyrode's medium. After freezing and thawing in a cryopreserving diluent, approximately 50% of spermatozoa recovered progressive motility and displayed a similar velocity to spermatozoa prior to freezing. Unusual protrusions of the acrosome of the panda spermatozoon were noted.
Following insemination, one female conceived and gave birth, after a gestation of 159 days, to two cubs, one of which subsequently died. Another female exhibited a rise in circulating progesterone but pregnancy was not confirmed.  相似文献

Abstract: Three strains of cyanobacteria isolated from karstic Lake Arcas were tested for photosynthetic adaptations to soluble sulfide. One of them, AO11, was identified as Oscillatoria cf. ornata , and forms dense populations in the sulfide-rich anoxic hypolimnion of this lake. This cyanobacterium was able to perform sulfide-dependent anoxygenic photosynthesis and its oxygenic photosynthesis was relatively insensitive to sulfide. The other strains studied were AP1 and AO21, identified respectively as Pseudanabaena sp. and Oscillatoria cf. tenuis , populations of which were present only in epilimnetic waters at low population densities. Pseudanabaena sp. also carried out anoxygenic photosynthesis, but oxygenic photosynthesis was totally inhibited by 0.5 mM sulfide. Oscillatoria cf. tenuis lost most of its oxygenic photosynthetic capacity when submitted to 0.1 mM sulfide and anoxygenic photosynthesis accounted for less than 20% of sulfide-free controls. In addition to different photosynthetic capabilities, the three cyanobacteria exhibited differences in light-harvesting photosynthetic accessory pigments. Pigment analysis of cultures grown under different light conditions showed the capacity of Oscillatoria cf. ornata AO11 to produce phycoerythrin under low light intensity or under predominantly green light, while neither Pseudanabaena sp. AP1 nor Oscillatoria cf. tenuis AO21 produced this pigment. The complementary chromatic adaptation of Oscillatoria cf. ornata correlates well with its summertime distribution under the dim light field of the hypolimnion. The distribution and abundance of specific cyanobacterial populations in Lake Arcas can thus be explained by the interplay of light regime and presence of sulfide as some of the most determinant ecological parameters.  相似文献

In the dairy breeding industry, pregnancy of dairy cows is essential to initiate milk production, so that high fertility rates are required to increase their productivity. In this regard, sperm proteins that are indicative of sperm quality and/or fertility have become an important target of study. Glutathione S-transferase Mu 3 (GSTM3) has been established as a fertility and sperm quality parameter in humans and pigs and, consequently, it might be a potential biomarker in cattle. For this reason, the present work aimed to determine if GSTM3 could predict sperm quality and in vivo fertility in this species. Sperm quality was assessed with flow cytometry and computer-assisted sperm analysis. Immunoblotting and immunofluorescence analysis were performed to determine the presence and localisation pattern of sperm GSTM3. This enzyme was found to be present in bovine sperm and to be localised along the sperm tail and the equatorial segment of the head. No significant associations between sperm GSTM3 and sperm quality parameters were observed, except a negative association with morphologically abnormal sperm having a coiled tail. In addition, and more relevant, higher levels of GSTM3 in sperm were seen in bulls showing lower in vivo fertility rates. In conclusion, our data evidenced the presence of GSTM3 in bovine sperm. Moreover, we suggest that, despite not being associated with sperm quality, GSTM3 might be an in vivo subfertility biomarker in cattle sperm, and that high levels of this protein could be an indicative of defective spermatogenesis and/or epididymal maturation.  相似文献

Research on island species–area relationships (ISAR) has expanded to incorporate functional (IFDAR) and phylogenetic (IPDAR) diversity. However, relative to the ISAR, we know little about IFDARs and IPDARs, and lack synthetic global analyses of variation in form of these three categories of island diversity–area relationship (IDAR). Here, we undertake the first comparative evaluation of IDARs at the global scale using 51 avian archipelagic data sets representing true and habitat islands. Using null models, we explore how richness-corrected functional and phylogenetic diversity scale with island area. We also provide the largest global assessment of the impacts of species introductions and extinctions on the IDAR. Results show that increasing richness with area is the primary driver of the (non-richness corrected) IPDAR and IFDAR for many data sets. However, for several archipelagos, richness-corrected functional and phylogenetic diversity changes linearly with island area, suggesting that the dominant community assembly processes shift along the island area gradient. We also find that archipelagos with the steepest ISARs exhibit the biggest differences in slope between IDARs, indicating increased functional and phylogenetic redundancy on larger islands in these archipelagos. In several cases introduced species seem to have ‘re-calibrated’ the IDARs such that they resemble the historic period prior to recent extinctions.  相似文献

A homozygous flightless strain, obtained by selection from a laboratory population of Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae), has been reared under controlled conditions since 1982 after sampling in China. The adults of this flightless strain have normal elytra and wings but drop almost vertically when they attempt to fly. The origin of this mutation, whether laboratory or natural, is discussed. As the mutation does not affect the fitness of the beetles, this flightless strain can be used in biological control. Releasing flightless adults rather than larvae should provide the potential for more continuous control of aphids by both larvae and adults.  相似文献

A new method for the quantification of insect movements on leaves is presented and applied to larvae of a wheat aphid predator, C. septempunctata. The method results from behavioral definition of positions adopted by this predator during its advance along the wheat leaf. Through a factor analysis of multiple correspondences, the method allowed specification of some aspects of predator movements on plants, especially the frequency of position associations, to give a new definition of local search and to describe some behavioral interactions with aphids. The consequences for predator efficiency are discussed.  相似文献
