We studied the effects of landscape structure on species with resource nutritional partition between the immature and adult stages by investigating how food quality and spatial structure of a landscape may affect the invasion and colonization of the insect pest, Diabrotica speciosa. To this end, we formulated two bidimensional stochastic cellular automata, one for the insect immature stage and the other for the adult stage. The automata are coupled by adult oviposition and emergence. Further, each automata site has a specific culture type, which can affect differently the fitness attributes of immatures and adults, such as mortality, development and oviposition rates. We derived the mean-field approximation for these automata model, from which we obtained conditions for insect invasion. We ran numerical simulations using entomological parameters obtained from laboratory experiments (using bean, soybean, potato, and corn crops), and we compared the results of the automata with the ones given by the mean-field approximation. Finally, using artificially generated landscapes, we discussed how the structured heterogeneous landscape can affect dispersal and establishment of insect populations.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) has adapted to urban environments. The urbanization process provides suitable habitats for this disease vector, subsequently increasing the probability of the transmission of pathogens in high‐density environments. Urban environments provide metal‐stressed larval habitats. However, little is known about the physiological cost of metal stress or how this might affect the performance of this mosquito species. The present study aims to characterize the sublethal physiological consequences of metal stress in Aedes aegypti. Various parameters of mosquito physiology under larval metal stress are assessed, including larval metallothionein expression and the effects of larval metal stress on adult performance and their progeny. The results show that environmentally relevant larval metal stress compromises larval and adult development and performance, and also results in larval metal tolerance along with an increase in lipid consumption. These performance costs are coupled with a dramatic increase in metallothionein expression in the midgut. Metal stress results in a lowered adult body mass and neutral storage lipids at emergence, starvation tolerance, fecundity and starvation tolerance of offspring compared with non‐metal‐stressed individuals. Ironically, larval metal stress results in increased adult longevity. Taken together, these findings indicate that even low levels of environmentally relevant larval metal stress have considerable physiological consequences for this important disease vector.  相似文献

Bit and bridle accessories improperly fitted in ridden horses can cause oral trauma such as bone spurs, commissure ulceration, and tongue lacerations. This study was used to identify, grade, and compare the types of oral traumas commonly found within polo ponies and race horses. Injuries were assessed visually and by palpation on the tongue, lips’ commissures, and interdental space. A total of 50 polo ponies and 50 race horses were sampled in the South of England. A Poisson model was successfully fitted to the data (p < .001), and the variables of discipline (p < .001), injury type (p < .001), and age (p < .001) were significant. Race horses with snaffle bits were predisposed to significantly higher severities and prevalence of oral trauma than were polo ponies in gag bits. Only polo ponies were observed with tongue trauma. Race horses had higher severities of injuries in the commissures and bone spurs. Positive correlations were found between age and/or time in sport and induced biting injuries. Polo ponies had been playing longer before the occurrence of injuries.  相似文献

Achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism, is characterized by a mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). Achondroplasia is an orphan pathology with no pharmacological treatment so far. However, the possibility of using the dinucleotide diadenosine tetraphosphate (Ap4A) with therapeutic purposes in achondroplasia has been previously suggested. The pathogenesis involves the constitutive activation of FGFR3, resulting in altered biochemical and physiological processes in chondrocytes. Some of these altered processes can be influenced by changes in cell volume and ionic currents. In this study, the action of mutant FGFR3 on chondrocyte size and chloride flux in achondroplastic chondrocytes was investigated as well as the effect of the Ap4A on these processes triggered by mutant FGFR3. Stimulation with the fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9), the preferred ligand for FGFR3, induced an enlarged achondroplastic chondrocyte size and an increase in the intracellular chloride concentration, suggesting the blockade of chloride efflux. Treatment with the Ap4A reversed the morphological changes triggered by FGF9 and restored the chloride efflux. These data provide further evidence for the therapeutic potential of this dinucleotide in achondroplasia treatment.  相似文献

The relative contribution of the high‐affinity K+ transporter AtHAK5 and the inward rectifier K+ channel AtAKT1 to K+ uptake in the high‐affinity range of concentrations was studied in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia (Col‐0). The results obtained with wild‐type lines, with T‐DNA insertion in both genes and specific uptake inhibitors, show that AtHAK5 and AtAKT1 mediate the ‐sensitive and the Ba2+‐sensitive components of uptake, respectively, and that they are the two major contributors to uptake in the high‐affinity range of Rb+ concentrations. Using Rb+ as a K+ analogue, it was shown that AtHAK5 mediates absorption at lower Rb+ concentrations than AtAKT1 and depletes external Rb+ to values around 1 μM. Factors such as the presence of K+ or during plant growth determine the relative contribution of each system. The presence of in the growth solution inhibits the induction of AtHAK5 by K+ starvation. In K+‐starved plants grown without , both systems are operative, but when is present in the growth solution, AtAKT1 is probably the only system mediating Rb+ absorption, and the capacity of the roots to deplete Rb+ is reduced.  相似文献

The responses of Quercus robur (oak) and Fagus sylvatica (beech) seedlings to four different light environments (full, 50%, 40% and 15% sunlight) and to a rapid increase in irradiance were explored during the summer, after 2 years of growth in a forest nursery at Nancy (France). Significant differences between the two species were found for most variables. Phenotypic plasticity for morphological variables (root-shoot ratio, leaf size, leaf weight ratio) was higher in beech than in oak, while the reverse was true for anatomical (stomatal density, epidermis thickness, exchange surface area of the palisade parenchyma) and physiological (maximum photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, Rubisco activity) variables. Predawn photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) was higher in oak than in beech in all light environments except in 15% sunlight. Fv/Fm was significantly lower in 100% sunlight than in the other light environments in beech but not in oak. Maximum photosynthetic rates (Amax) increased with increasing light availability in the two species but they were always higher in oak than in beech. Oak exhibited higher Rubisco activity than beech in full sunlight. The transfer of shade-adapted seedlings to the open caused a decrease of Fv/Fm, which was larger for beech than for oak. Transferred oak but not beech plants recovered gradually to the control Fv/Fm values. The decreased chlorophyll content and the increased non-photochemical quenching observed in high-light beech seedlings were not enough to avoid photoinhibition. The results suggest that a greater tolerance of strong irradiance is linked to an enhanced physiological plasticity (variables related to photosynthesis), while shade tolerance relies on an enhanced plasticity in light-harvesting variables (crown morphology and chlorophyll content).  相似文献

Species of the subgenus Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) have been reported in cattle and other domestic and wild ruminants worldwide. A previous study in Brazil found at least four genotypes infecting cattle (Bos taurus), but only one in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). However, the small number of isolates examined from buffalo, all inhabiting nearby areas, has precluded evaluation of their diversity, host associations and geographical structure. To address these questions, we evaluated the genetic diversity and phylogeographical patterns of 25 isolates from water buffalo and 28 from cattle from four separate locations in Brazil and Venezuela. Multigene phylogenetic analyses of ssrRNA, internal transcribed spacer of rDNA (ITSrDNA), 5SrRNA, glycosomal glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH), mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cyt b), spliced leader (SL) and cathepsin L-like (CATL) sequences positioned all isolates from sympatric and allopatric buffalo populations into the highly homogeneous genotype TthIA, while the cattle isolates were assigned to three different genotypes, all distinct from TthIA. Polymorphisms in all of these sequences separated the trypanosomes infecting water buffalo, cattle, sheep, antelope and deer, and suggested that they correspond to separate species. Congruent phylogenies inferred with all genes indicated a predominant clonal structure of the genotypes. The multilocus analysis revealed one monophyletic assemblage formed exclusively by trypanosomes of ruminants, which corresponds to the subgenus T. (Megatrypanum). The high degree of host specificity, evidenced by genotypes exclusive to each ruminant species and lack of genotype shared by different host species, suggested that the evolutionary history of trypanosomes of this subgenus was strongly constrained by their ruminant hosts. However, incongruence between ruminant and trypanosome phylogenies did not support host-parasite co-evolution, indicating that host switches have occurred across ruminants followed by divergences, giving rise to new trypanosome genotypes adapted exclusively to one host species.  相似文献
