Some species of flowering plants engage in nonmodel deceptive pollination, attracting pollinators by large nonmimetic floral displays and providing no reward. Pollinators can learn to avoid deceptive plants and to favor nectariferous species. The reproductive success of these species is expected to be density dependent for two opposite reasons: the commoner cheating flowers are, the easier they are to avoid and the lower the quality of the patch, making it more difficult to recognize that unrewarding flowers are not profitable. When a deceptive species is made up of multiple floral variants, pollinators' learning could decrease the reproductive success of any particularly common floral variant. Within a population of deceptive plants, mean reproductive success could, therefore, vary with the number of floral variants. We investigate these three hypotheses by modeling the behavior of pollinators foraging in communities of deceptive and rewarding flowers. Simulations revealed that the reproductive success of deceptive flowers varies in a density-dependent manner and that floral variants can be submitted to negative frequency-dependent selection. We compare density dependence in nonmodel deceptive species to what is expected in Batesian mimics and discuss possible selection of morphological variants. Finally, we survey how pollinators' learning capacities can make mean reproductive success depend on morphological variability within a population.  相似文献

Understanding the ecology and evolution of parasites is contingent on identifying the selection pressures they face across their infection landscape. Such a task is made challenging by the fact that these pressures will likely vary across time and space, as a result of seasonal and geographical differences in host susceptibility or transmission opportunities. Avian haemosporidian blood parasites are capable of infecting multiple co‐occurring hosts within their ranges, yet whether their distribution across time and space varies similarly in their different host species remains unclear. Here, we applied a new PCR method to detect avian haemosporidia (genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium) and to determine parasite prevalence in two closely related and co‐occurring host species, blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus, N = 529) and great tits (Parus major, N = 443). Our samples were collected between autumn and spring, along an elevational gradient in the French Pyrenees and over a three‐year period. Most parasites were found to infect both host species, and while these generalist parasites displayed similar elevational patterns of prevalence in the two host species, this was not always the case for seasonal prevalence patterns. For example, Leucocytozoon group A parasites showed inverse seasonal prevalence when comparing between the two host species, being highest in winter and spring in blue tits but higher in autumn in great tits. While Plasmodium relictum prevalence was overall lower in spring relative to winter or autumn in both species, spring prevalence was also lower in blue tits than in great tits. Together, these results reveal how generalist parasites can exhibit host‐specific epidemiology, which is likely to complicate predictions of host–parasite co‐evolution.  相似文献

Chain and ring chromosome configurations were detected in a small percentage of the lymphocytes of a patient suffering from Thiberge-Weissenbach syndrome. Precise recognition of the chromosomes involved in the rearrangements did not indicate a systematic order of end-to-end fusions. Ecologists and population geneticists have long suspected that the diversity of living organisms was connected to the structure of their environment. In heterogeneous environments, diversifying selection combined to restricted gene flow may indeed lead to locally adapted populations. The freshwater snail, Galba truncatula, is a good model to address this question because it is present in a heterogeneous environment composed of temporary and permanent waters. In order to test the selective importance of those environments, we proposed here to measure survival of lineages from both habitats during drought episodes. To this purpose, we experimentally submitted adults and juveniles individuals from both habitats to drought. We found a difference in desiccation resistance between temporary and permanents waters only for adults. Adults from temporary habitats were found more resistant to drought. This divergence in desiccation resistance seems to explain the unexpected life history traits differences between habitats observed.  相似文献

The wildlife populations of Northern Central African Republic experienced precipitous declines during the 1970s and 1980s. While anecdotes coming out of the region indicate that the wildlife populations remain under serious threat, little is known about their status. An aerial sample count was carried out in the Northern Central African Republic at the end of the dry season in June 2005 and covered an 85,000 km2 complex landscape containing national parks, hunting reserves and community hunting areas. Results show a dramatic decline of wildlife since the previous survey in 1985. In 20 years, large mammals’ numbers decreased by 65%, probably because of poaching and diseases brought by illegal cattle transhumance. Elephant (Loxodonta africana) and Buffon kob (Kobus kob) populations showed the greatest decline (over 80% each), while buffalo (Syncerus caffer), roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) and Giant Lord’s Derby Eland (Taurotragus derbianus) populations seem stable or increasing over these last 20 years. The analysis of the wildlife population distribution by status of the different types of protected areas (national parks, hunting areas) showed that individual encounter rates of elephant and buffalo were lower in national parks than in neighbouring hunting areas, while those for roan, giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) and Buffon kob were higher in the national parks.  相似文献

The process of thyroid hormone synthesis, which occurs in the lumen of the thyroid follicles, results from an oxidative reaction leading, as side effects, to the multimerization of thyroglobulin (TG), the prothyroid hormone. Although hormone synthesis is a continuous process, the amount of Tg multimers is relatively constant. Here, we investigated the role of two molecular chaperones, protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and immunoglobulin heavy chain-binding protein (BiP), present in the follicular lumen, on the multimerization process due to oxidation using both native Tg and its N-terminal domain (NTD). In vitro, PDI decreased multimerization of Tg and even suppressed the formation of NTD multimers. Under the same conditions, BiP was able to bind to Tg and NTD multimers but did not affect the process of multimerization. Associating BiP with PDI did not enhance the ability of PDI to limit the formation of multimers produced by oxidation. However, when BiP and PDI were reacted together with the multimeric forms and for a longer time (48 h), BiP greatly increased the efficiency of PDI. Accordingly, these two molecular chaperones probably act sequentially on the reduction of the intermolecular disulfide bridges. In the thyroid, a similar process may also be effective and participate in limiting the amount of Tg multimers present in the colloid. These results suggest that extracellular molecular chaperones play a similar role to that occurring in the endoplasmic reticulum and, furthermore, take part in the control of multimerization and aggregation of proteins formed by oxidation.  相似文献
