The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus Montagu, 1821) is a regularly observed species in the Mediterranean Sea, but its network organization has never been investigated on a large scale. We described the network macrostructure of the bottlenose dolphin (meta)population inhabiting the Pelagos Sanctuary (a wide protected area located in the north-western portion of the Mediterranean basin) and we analysed its connectivity in relation to the landscape traits. We pooled effort and sighting data collected by 13 different research institutions operating within the Pelagos Sanctuary from 1994 to 2011 to examine the distribution of bottlenose dolphins in the Pelagos study area and then we applied a social network analysis, investigating the association patterns of the photo-identified dolphins (806 individuals in 605 sightings). The bottlenose dolphin (meta)population inhabiting the Pelagos Sanctuary is clustered in discrete units whose borders coincide with habitat breakages. This complex structure seems to be shaped by the geo-morphological and ecological features of the landscape, through a mechanism of local specialization of the resident dolphins. Five distinct clusters were identified in the (meta)population and two of them were solid enough to be further investigated and compared. Significant differences were found in the network parameters, suggesting a different social organization of the clusters, possibly as a consequence of the different local specialization. 相似文献

Conflicting data are reported on pro- or anti-inflammatory activity of bovine lactoferrin (bLf) in different cell models as phagocytes or epithelial cell lines infected by bacteria. Here we evaluated the bLf effect on epithelial models mimicking two human pathologies characterized by inflammation and infection with specific bacterial species. Primary bronchial epithelium from a cystic fibrosis (CF) patient and differentiated intestinal epithelial cells were infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa LESB58 isolated from a CF patient and Adherent-Invasive Escherichia coli LF82 isolated from a Crohn’s disease patient. Surprisingly, bLf significantly reduced the intracellular bacterial survival, but differently modulated the inflammatory response. These data lead us to hypothesize that bLf differentially acts depending on the epithelial model and infecting pathogen. To verify this hypothesis, we explored whether bLf could modulate ferroportin (Fpn), the only known cellular iron exporter from cells, that, by lowering the intracellular iron level, determines a non permissive environment for intracellular pathogens. Here, for the first time, we describe the bLf ability to up-regulate Fpn protein in infected epithelial models. Our data suggest that the mechanism underlying the bLf modulating activity on inflammatory response in epithelial cells is complex and the bLf involvement in modulating cellular iron homeostasis should be taken into account. 相似文献

Penicillium variabile P16 immobilized on polyurethane sponge produced gluconic acid in presence of rock phosphate, the latter being simultaneously solubilized during five repeated batches. A total production of 42, 60, and 90 g gluconic acid/l was obtained for 3, 7, and 14 g rock phosphate/l, respectively. Accordingly, soluble phosphorus concentration increased with gluconic acid production, reaching a maximum of 350 mg/l at the 3d batch in medium supplemented with 14 g rock phosphate/l. 相似文献

BackgroundYouth suicide is a major public health issue throughout the world. Numerous theoretical models have been proposed to improve our understanding of suicidal behaviours, but medical science has struggled to integrate all the complex aspects of this question. The aim of this review is to synthesise the views of suicidal adolescents and young adults, their parents, and their healthcare professionals on the topics of suicidal behaviour and management of those who have attempted suicide, in order to propose new pathways of care, closer to the issues and expectations of each group.ConclusionThe violence of the message of a suicidal act and the fears associated with death lead to incomprehension and interfere with the capacity for empathy of both family members and professionals. The issue in treatment is to be able to witness this violence so that the patient feels understood and heard, and thus to limit recurrences. 相似文献

Glucose oxidase (GOD) production by 84 strains of the genus Penicillium was studied in order to define the distribution of the activity among and within the species. Plate screening and sub-screening in shake culture showed a rather homogeneous behaviour of strains belonging to the same species. Penicillium chrysogenum, P. expansum, P. italicum and P. variabile had a concomitant good production of GOD and catalase activity; peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase were never present. The involvement of frontopolar cortex in mediating prospective memory processes has been evidenced by various studies, mainly by means of neuroimaging techniques. Recently, one transcranial magnetic stimulation study documented that transient inhibition of left Brodmann Area (BA) 10 impaired verbal prospective memory. This result raises the issue of whether the BA 10 involvement in prospective memory functioning may be modulated by the physical characteristics of the stimuli used. The present study aimed to investigate the role of the frontopolar cortex in visual-spatial PM by means of the application of inhibitory theta-burst stimulation. Twelve volunteers were evaluated after inhibitory theta-burst stimulation over left BA 10, right BA10 and CZ (control condition). In the prospective memory procedure, sequences of four spatial positions (black squares) each were presented. During the inter-sequence delay, subjects had to reproduce the sequence in the observed order (ongoing task forward) or the reverse order (backward). At the occurrence of a target position, subjects had to press a key on the keyboard (prospective memory score). Recall and recognition of the target positions were also tested. We found that prospective memory accuracy was lower after theta-burst stimulation over right BA10 than CZ (p<0.01), whereas it was comparable in left BA10 and CZ conditions. No significant difference was found among the three conditions on recall and recognition of target positions and on ongoing task performance. Our findings provide a novel strong evidence for a specific involvement of right frontopolar cortex in visual-spatial prospective memory. In the context of previous data providing evidence for left BA 10 involvement in verbal prospective memory, our results also suggest material-specific lateralization of prospective memory processes in BA 10. 相似文献

The presence of a stable tertiary structure in the bioactive N-terminal portion of parathyroid hormone (PTH), a major hormone in the maintenance of extracellular calcium homeostasis, is still debated. In this work, 15N relaxation parameters of the 33 backbone amides of human PTH(1-34) were determined in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) and in the presence of dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles. The relaxation parameters were analyzed using both the model-free formalism (G. Lipari and A. Szabo, Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1982, Vol. 104, pp. 4546-4549) and the reduced spectral density functions approach (J.-F. Lefevre, K. T. Dayie, J. W. Peng, and G. Wagner, Biochemistry, 1996, Vol. 35, pp. 2674-2686). In PBS, the region around Gly12 possesses a high degree of flexibility and the C-terminal helix is less flexible than the N-terminal one. In the presence of DPC micelles, the mobility of the entire molecule is reduced, but the stability of the N-terminal helix increases relative to the C-terminal one. A point of relatively higher mobility at residue Gly12 is still present and a new site of local mobility at residues 16-17 is generated. These results justify the lack of experimental nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) restraints with lack of tertiary structure and support the hypothesis that, in the absence of the receptor, the relative spatial orientation of the two N- and C-terminal helices is undefined. The flexibility in the midregion of PTH(1-34), maintained in the presence of the membrane-mimetic environment, may enable the correct relative disposition of the two helices, favoring a productive interaction with the receptor. 相似文献

The Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) has been introduced as a training tool to improve the efficiency of eccentric hamstring muscle contraction. The aim of this study was to perform a biomechanical analysis of the NHE. Eighteen participants (20.4 ± 1.9 years) performed two sets of five repetitions each of the NHE and maximal eccentric voluntary contraction (MEVC) of the knee flexors on an isokinetic dynamometer whilst knee angular displacement and electrical activity (EMG) of biceps femoris were measured. EMG was on average higher during the NHE (134.3% of the MEVC). During the forward fall of the NHE, the angle at which a sharp increase in downward velocity occurred varied between 47.9 and 80.5 deg, while the peak knee angular velocity (pVelocity) varied between 47.7 and 132.8 deg s?1. A significant negative correlation was found between pVelocity and peak EMG (r = ?0.62, p < 0.01) and EMG at 45 deg (r = ?0.75, p < 0.01) expressed as a percentage of peak MEVC EMG. Some of the variables analyzed exhibited good to excellent levels of intra- and inter-session reliability. This type of analysis could be used to indirectly monitor the level of eccentric strength of the hamstring muscles while performing the NHE and potentially any training- or injury-related changes. 相似文献

Adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus plays a critical role in hippocampus-dependent spatial learning. It remains unknown, however, how new neurons become functionally integrated into spatial circuits and contribute to hippocampus-mediated forms of learning and memory. To investigate these issues, we used a mouse model in which the differentiation of adult-generated dentate gyrus neurons can be anticipated by conditionally expressing the pro-differentiative gene PC3 (Tis21/BTG2) in nestin-positive progenitor cells. In contrast to previous studies that affected the number of newly generated neurons, this strategy selectively changes their timing of differentiation. New, adult-generated dentate gyrus progenitors, in which the PC3 transgene was expressed, showed accelerated differentiation and significantly reduced dendritic arborization and spine density. Functionally, this genetic manipulation specifically affected different hippocampus-dependent learning and memory tasks, including contextual fear conditioning, and selectively reduced synaptic plasticity in the dentate gyrus. Morphological and functional analyses of hippocampal neurons at different stages of differentiation, following transgene activation within defined time-windows, revealed that the new, adult-generated neurons up to 3–4 weeks of age are required not only to acquire new spatial information but also to use previously consolidated memories. Thus, the correct unwinding of these key memory functions, which can be an expression of the ability of adult-generated neurons to link subsequent events in memory circuits, is critically dependent on the correct timing of the initial stages of neuron maturation and connection to existing circuits. 相似文献
