At some point in their history, most forests in the Mediterranean Basin have been subjected to intensive management or converted to agriculture land. Knowing how forest plant communities recovered after the abandonment of forest-management or agricultural practices (including livestock grazing) provides a basis for investigating how previous land management have affected plant species diversity and composition in forest ecosystems. Our study investigated the consequences of historical “land management” practices on present-day Mediterranean forests by comparing species assemblages and the diversity of (i) all plant species and (ii) each ecological group defined by species’ habitat preferences and successional status (i.e., early-, mid-, and late-successional species). We compared forest stands that differed both in land-use history and in successional stage. In addition, we evaluated the value of those stands for biodiversity conservation. The study revealed significant compositional differentiation among stands that was due to among-stand variations in the diversity (namely, species richness and evenness) of early-, intermediate-, and late-successional species. Historical land management has led to an increase in compositional divergences among forest stands and the loss of late-successional forest species.  相似文献

Little is known about the relationship between illegal firms and local economic activity. In this paper I study changes in satellite night lights across Mexican municipalities after the arrival of large drug trafficking organizations in the period 2000–2010. After accounting for state trends and differences in political regimes, results indicate no significant change in night lights after the arrival of these illegal firms. Estimated coefficients are precise, robust, and similar across different drug trafficking organizations.  相似文献

Andean uplift and the collision of North and South America are thought to have major implications for the diversification of the Neotropical biota. However, few studies have investigated how these geological events may have influenced diversification. We present a multilocus phylogeny of 102 Protieae taxa (73% of published species), sampled pantropically, to test hypotheses about the relative importance of dispersal, vicariance, habitat specialization, and biotic factors in the diversification of this ecologically dominant tribe of Neotropical trees. Bayesian fossil‐calibrated analyses date the Protieae stem at 55 Mya. Biogeographic analyses reconstruct an initial late Oligocene/early Miocene radiation in Amazonia for Neotropical Protieae, with several subsequent late Miocene dispersal events to Central America, the Caribbean, Brazil's Atlantic Forest, and the Chocó. Regional phylogenetic structure results indicate frequent dispersal among regions throughout the Miocene and many instances of more recent regional in situ speciation. Habitat specialization to white sand or flooded soils was common, especially in Amazonia. There was one significant increase in diversification rate coincident with colonization of the Neotropics, followed by a gradual decrease consistent with models of diversity‐dependent cladogenesis. Dispersal, biotic interactions, and habitat specialization are thus hypothesized to be the most important processes underlying the diversification of the Protieae.  相似文献

Faced with an ephemeral prey, aphidophagous ladybirds rely on the hydrocarbons present in the tracks of their larvae to choose an unoccupied patch for egg laying. Although both conspecific and heterospecific larval tracks might deter females from oviposition, the response to the later is often less striking. Several explanations have been suggested to account for this. In this paper we tested the phylogeny hypothesis, which predicts that the chemical composition of the tracks of closely related species of ladybirds will be more similar to one another than to those of more distantly related species. Qualitative and quantitative information on the chemical nature of the larval tracks and a molecular phylogeny of seven species belonging to three different genera are provided, and the congruence between these two sets of results assessed. The results confirm the phylogeny hypothesis and infer a gradual mode of evolution of these infochemicals.  相似文献

Newly designed 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-containing fluorescent probes with four excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) sites were successfully tested in live cell-imaging assays using a confluent monolayer of human stem-cells (tissue). Catenations between sister chromatids result from DNA replication and must be resolved to ensure proper chromatid segregation in mitosis. Functionally active Topoisomerase II (Topo II), through its mechanism of concerted breaking and rejoining of double stranded DNA, is required to carry out this fundamental process. In previous studies we have shown that modifications in DNA sequence by halogenated pyrimidines and by the demethylating agent 5-azacytidine leads to malfunction of Topo II that results in an increased yield of endorreduplicated cells as a result of segregation failure. In the present work we have evaluated the possible influence of the methylating agent Budesonide to modify the frequency of endoreduplicated cells in AA8 Chinese hamster cell population. Our results seem to indicate that when Budesonide was administered for two consecutive cell cycles did induce an increase in the yield of endoreduplicated cells, as previously observed for the hypomethylating agent 5-azaC. We have also examined the possible relationship between extensive hypermethylation induced by Budesonide in DNA and stabilization of cleavable complexes by m-AMSA. Taken as a whole, our results show that the degree of methylation in DNA correlates with the effectiveness of m-AMSA to stabilize the Topo II-DNA complexes and to induce DNA cleavage. These findings evidence for the first time the functional importance of DNA hyper- and hypomethylation changes as epigenetic factors able to modulate Topo II activity for proper chromosome segregation.  相似文献

It has been sustained that the sticky traps present in some carnivorous plants could have evolved from ancestor species bearing leaves covered with secreting glands formerly associated with a defensive function. In this study, we evaluated the interaction of the carnivorous plant Pinguicula moranensis with its insect herbivores to assess the defensive role of the glandular trichomes. Firstly, we estimated the standing levels of insect herbivory in field conditions. We also evaluated the response of herbivore insects to the removal of the secreting glands from the leaves of P. moranensis in field and laboratory conditions. The mean damage was 1.61%, and half of the sampled plants showed no damage. The low level of herbivory in the field suggests that P. moranensis has an efficient defense ability. In the field experiment, after 25 d of exposure to natural damage, treated glandless plants received 18 times more damage than control plants. In the laboratory, the consumption of glandless tissue was three times higher during a 6 h evaluation period. Overall, our results provide evidence that secreting trichomes in Pinguicula are not only associated with prey capture but also have a defensive role. The defensive function could have favored the evolution of the sticky traps, the most extended prey‐capture strategy among carnivorous plants.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to characterize the structural and molecular changes in the coagulating gland from rats submitted to long-term alcohol treatment, as well as the possibility of recovery of these parameters after interrupting the alcohol administration. Ten Wistar and twenty UChB rats were divided into: Control group received tap water; Alcoholic group received 10% (v/v) ethanol daily for 150 days; and Abstinent group, received 10% (v/v) ethanol daily for 120 days and then tap water like the control for another 30 days. After 150 days, samples from the coagulating glands were processed for morphological and immunohistochemical analyses. The results showed atrophied epithelium and hypertrophied stroma, especially in the alcoholic group. Intensed androgen receptor (AR) immunolocalization was verified in the epithelium and weak in the stroma of the control group in relation to the other groups. Intensed insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGFR-1) immunolocalization was verified in the stroma of the alcoholic and abstinent groups. Thus, it could be concluded that the excessive alcohol consumption caused morphological and molecular changes in the coagulating gland, characterizing the inverse relation of AR and IGFR-1 localization. The alcohol was an important factor in cellular mitosis occurrence, which could be fundamental element involved in glandular lesions.  相似文献
