Eye movement parameters in reading sentences with syntactic ambiguities in Russian

We studied eye movement parameters in reading syntactically ambiguous sentences with the feminine variant of relative clause in Russian. A priori difficulty in analyzing the structure of the sentence leads to the increased time of its reading, compared with the time of reading control (unambiguous) sentences. The time of reading increases due to higher frequencies of regressive saccades made by the subjects for rereading the ambiguous fragments of the sentence. This fact, in turn, leads to an increased number of fixations and their longer duration. The total reading time for the particular words that make up the ambiguous fragment depended on disambiguation result (the type of closure). When the subjects attached the subordinate clause to the first noun of the noun group (early closure), the time of reading this noun increased, compared to the reading time required for the second noun. When the subjects chose the second noun (late closure), the time of reading either of the two did not differ. Our results indicate that the increased time of reading the first noun of the noun group attached to the subordinate clause depends on the prevalence of early closure in the Russian language.     

Retino-pulvinar pathway of the cat brain

Peculiarities on axonal distribution and termination of the retinal ganglionar cells within the limits of the thalamic pulvinar nuclei have been studied in 10 cats by means of the radioautography method combined with silver nitrate impregnation (Fink--Heimer technique). The ganglionar cells have projections on two pulvinar nuclei -- the lateral and the inferior. The medial pulvinar nucleus has no similar connections. The retinal projections in the pulvinar nuclear complex are bilateral and nearly symmetrical, the contralateral projections of the pathway somewhat predominate.     

Genetic analysis of the Hsm3 protein domain structure in yeast <Emphasis Type="Italic">Saccharomyces cerevisiae</Emphasis>

Gene HSM3 encodes the Hsm3 protein involved in the minor branch in the system responsible for the correction of mismatched bases in DNA structure and controls replicative and reparative spontaneous mutagenesis in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Spontaneous and UV-induced mutagenesis was studied in three mutant alleles of gene HSM3, and repair effectivity of artificial heteroduplexes was assessed in DNA molecule. The resuts of these studies allowed establishment of the protein domain structure of protein Hsm3 and functions of each domain: the N-terminal domain is responsible for binding to mispaired bases, and the C-terminal domain ensures the interaction with other proteins involved in the system of mismatched base correction.
