This study aimed at investigating two aspects of neuromuscular control around the hip and knee joint while executing the roundhouse kick (RK) using two techniques: Impact RK (IRK) at trunk level and No-Impact RK at face level (NIRK). The influence of technical skill level was also investigated by comparing two groups: elite Karateka and Amateurs. Surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals have been recorded from the Vastus Lateralis (VL), Biceps Femoris (BF), Rectus Femoris (RF), Gluteus Maximum (GM) and Gastrocnemious (GA) muscles of the kicking leg in six Karateka and six Amateurs performing the RKs. Hip and knee kinematics were also assessed. EMG data were rectified, filtered and normalized to the maximal value obtained for each muscle over all trials; co-activation (CI) indexes of antagonist vs. overall (agonist and antagonist) activity were computed for hip and knee flexion and extension. Muscle Fiber Conduction Velocity (CV) obtained from VL and BF muscles was assessed as well. The effect of group and kick on angular velocity, CIs, and CVs was tested through a two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). An effect of group was showed in both kicks. Karateka presented higher knee and hip angular velocity; higher BF-CV (IRK: 5.1 ± 1.0 vs. 3.5 ± 0.5 m/s; NIRK: 5.7 ± 1.3 vs. 4.1 ± 0.5 m/s), higher CIs for hip movements and knee flexion and lower CI for knee extension. The results obtained suggest the presence of a skill-dependent activation strategy in the execution of the two kicks. CV results are suggestive of an improved ability of elite Karateka to recruit fast MUs as a part of training induced neuromuscular adaptation.  相似文献

In the eighties, Miquel and Fleming suggested that mitochondria play a key role in cellular aging. Mitochondria, and specially mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), are major targets of free radical attack. At present, it is well established that mitochondrial deficits accumulate upon aging due to oxidative damage. Thus, oxidative lesions to mtDNA accumulate with age in human and rodent tissues. Furthermore, levels of oxidative damage to mtDNA are several times higher than those of nuclear DNA. Mitochondrial size increases whereas mitochondrial membrane potential decreases with age in brain and liver.

Recently, we have shown that treatment with certain antioxidants, such as sulphur-containing antioxidants, vitamins C and E or the Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761, protects against the age-associated oxidative damage to mtDNA and oxidation of mitochondrial glutathione. Moreover, the extract EGb 761 also prevents changes in mitochondrial morphology and function associated with aging of the brain and liver. Thus, mitochondrial aging may be prevented by antioxidants. Furthermore, late onset administration of certain antioxidants is also able to prevent the impairment in physiological performance, particularly motor co-ordination, that occurs upon aging.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this article is to use the episode of the baby allegedly cloned by the Raelians and born on the day after Christmas 2002 in order to analyse what is threatened by the prospect of cloning as a reproductive method, and why it is a matter of such importance as to provoke immediate and general condemnation. The announcement made by the Raelians provoked public debate in the media. Therefore, analysis of the articles published in the main Italian newspapers during that period allows exploration of the hypothesis that the Raelians' attempt of cloning was generally interpreted as a threat against the basis of our conception of human identity, not only at the individual level—which defines each of us as a balance between difference and continuity—but also at the social level, where human identity is the result of a classification system in which human beings are identified in contrast to other living beings. For these reasons, the case of the Raelians is of particular interest because it strains the reproduction/identity nexus in an extreme way which highlights what otherwise may lie buried beneath a thick layer of taken-for-granted beliefs.  相似文献

The transmission of vector-borne protozoa such as parasites of the Order Haemosporida is dependent on both biotic and abiotic factors such as host life history traits and environmental conditions. This study aimed to identify the variables that determine haemosporidian prevalence, parasitaemia and aggregation within the context of elevation and avian life history traits in Central Veracruz, Mexico. We sampled 607 birds from 88 species; we used microscopy and the mtDNA cytochrome b gene to detect parasites. We found an overall prevalence of 32.3%. Haemosporidian prevalence was 21.6% in tropical sub-deciduous forest (at sea level), 38% in tropical deciduous forest (265 m above sea level (asl)), 19.4% in montane cloud forest (1630 m asl), and 51.7% in pine-oak forest (2790 m asl). The prevalence of each parasite genus was strongly influenced by elevation (a proxy of habitat type). Plasmodium showed the highest prevalence at low elevation. Haemoproteus increased in prevalence with elevation. Leucocytozoon displayed the highest prevalence at the highest elevation (pine-oak forest). Haemoproteus spp. and Leucocytozoon spp. prevalences were higher in open cup than in closed nests. Haemoproteus prevalence and haemosporidian parasitaemia were lower in solitary birds than birds with pairing and gregarious behavior. Haemosporidian aggregation decreased with elevation, yielding the significantly lowest values at the pine-oak forest. Elevation distribution patterns of prevalence for each genus were similar to those previously reported in other geographical areas (e.g., South America, Europe).  相似文献

This work examined the diet of the porbeagle shark Lamna nasus in the south-west Atlantic Ocean (SWAO, Argentina, 52° S–56° S) by analysing the stomach content information obtained by scientific observers who sampled specimens captured as by-catch on-board commercial fishing vessels from 2010 to 2020. A total of 148 fishing sites were analysed, in which the estimated catch was composed mainly of hoki Macruronus magellanicus (56.00%) and southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis (33.13%). From 413 porbeagle sharks sampled (292 females and 121 males) ranging from 71 to 241 cm total length (LT) (mean: 179.76 ± 26.74 cm), 310 (75.06%) contained food in the stomachs. The forage fish were mainly hoki M. magellanicus (23.53%) and southern blue whiting M. australis (19.05%), followed by the Patagonian sprat Sprattus fuegensis (4.48%) and nototheniids (1.4%). Cephalopods and crustaceans accounted for 10% of the diet. The estimated trophic level was 4.35. Generalized linear models revealed that the consumption of hoki M. magellanicus and southern blue whiting M. australis increased with the LT of the porbeagle shark. Moreover, smaller porbeagle sharks preyed upon both small and large teleost fish, whereas larger porbeagle sharks predated exclusively upon large fish. The diet of porbeagle shark involved interactions with fisheries as it fed upon the fish species that constituted the main catch in the analysed fishing sites, as well as the main catches of the austral trawl fisheries. The ecological role of porbeagle shark observed in the SWAO exposed implications for fisheries management from a multispecies perspective.  相似文献

The present study aimed to develop a protocol for somatic embryogenesis and encapsulation of coffee embryos (Coffea arabica L.), for the conservation of genotypes with characteristics of commercial interest. Somatic embryos were induced from leaf explants in Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 1 mg · L−1 of 2,4-dichlorophenoxiacetic acid (2,4-D) combined with 2 mg · L−1 of benzyladenine (BA). Somatic embryos (SE) at the globular stage were encapsulated in a sodium alginate matrix; two treatments were tested: MS + 5 mg · L−1 BA + 1 mg · L−1 NAA + 3% (w/v) alginate, and MS + 7 mg · L−1 BA + 5.7 mg · L−1 indoleacetic acid (IAA) + 3% (w/v) alginate. Alginate was complexed with 100 mM calcium chloride (CaCl2). Viability of the encapsulated SE was determined by staining with 0.01% fluorescein diacetate (FDA) after 0, 15, 30, and 45 days of storage at 4°C. Embryo viability was 100% in both treatments.  相似文献
