Tree Diversity Limits the Impact of an Invasive Forest Pest   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The impact of invasive herbivore species may be lower in more diverse plant communities due to mechanisms of associational resistance. According to the “resource concentration hypothesis” the amount and accessibility of host plants is reduced in diverse plant communities, thus limiting the exploitation of resources by consumers. In addition, the “natural enemy hypothesis” suggests that richer plant assemblages provide natural enemies with more complementary resources and habitats, thus promoting top down regulation of herbivores. We tested these two hypotheses by comparing crown damage by the invasive Asian chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) on chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) in pure and mixed stands in Italy. We estimated the defoliation on 70 chestnut trees in 15 mature stands sampled in the same region along a gradient of tree species richness ranging from one species (chestnut monocultures) to four species (mixtures of chestnut and three broadleaved species). Chestnut defoliation was significantly lower in stands with higher tree diversity. Damage on individual chestnut trees decreased with increasing height of neighboring, heterospecific trees. These results suggest that conservation biological control method based on tree species mixtures might help to reduce the impact of the Asian chestnut gall.  相似文献

Many aspects of cell signalling, trafficking, and targeting are governed by interactions between globular protein domains and short peptide segments. These domains often bind multiple peptides that share a common sequence pattern, or “linear motif” (e.g., SH3 binding to PxxP). Many domains are known, though comparatively few linear motifs have been discovered. Their short length (three to eight residues), and the fact that they often reside in disordered regions in proteins makes them difficult to detect through sequence comparison or experiment. Nevertheless, each new motif provides critical molecular details of how interaction networks are constructed, and can explain how one protein is able to bind to very different partners. Here we show that binding motifs can be detected using data from genome-scale interaction studies, and thus avoid the normally slow discovery process. Our approach based on motif over-representation in non-homologous sequences, rediscovers known motifs and predicts dozens of others. Direct binding experiments reveal that two predicted motifs are indeed protein-binding modules: a DxxDxxxD protein phosphatase 1 binding motif with a KD of 22 μM and a VxxxRxYS motif that binds Translin with a KD of 43 μM. We estimate that there are dozens or even hundreds of linear motifs yet to be discovered that will give molecular insight into protein networks and greatly illuminate cellular processes.  相似文献

Abstract. Larvae of the scarabaeoid genera Germarostes Paulian, Cyphopisthes Gestro, Paulianostes Ballerio, Ceratocanthus White, Pterorthochaetes Gestro, Madrasostes Paulian, Astaenomoechus Martínez & Pereira (Ceratocanthidae) and Hybosorus Macleay, Phaeochrous Castelnau, and Anaides Westwood (Hybosoridae) are described, keyed and illustrated with fifty‐seven drawings. A phylogenetic analysis of these two families based on larval morphology is presented. Fifty‐four larval morphological and three biological characters from twenty‐seven taxa revealed nineteen equally parsimonious cladograms. The monophyly of (Ceratocanthidae + Hybosoridae) is supported by four unambiguous unique synapomorphies: dorsal medial endocarina on cranium extended anteriorly into frontal sclerite; presence of large membranous spot on apical antennomere; labium dorsally with four pores in centre (secondarily reduced to two pores in some groups); and presence of stridulatory organ on fore‐ and middle legs (secondarily reduced in some groups). Our analysis suggests that the family Hybosoridae is paraphyletic with respect to Ceratocanthidae. The clade comprising the hybosorid genera Hybosorus and Phaeochrous is the sister group of the remaining Hybosoridae plus Ceratocanthidae. It is supported by two unambiguous synapomorphies: two apical antennomeres completely joined and the stridulatory organ represented by seven to nine large teeth anteriorly on the middle leg. The hybosorid genus Anaides is a sister group to the remaining Hybosoridae plus Ceratocanthidae (without Hybosorus and Phaeochrous) and the ceratocanthid genus Germarostes is a sister group to the remaining Hybosoridae plus Ceratocanthidae (without Hybosorus, Phaeochrous and Anaides). The ceratocanthid genera Cyphopisthes, Astaenomoechus, Paulianostes, Pterorthochaetes, and Madrasostes constitute a sister group to the hybosorid genus Cryptogenius and are supported by the presence of two reversions: two dorsal pores on labium and completely reduced stridulatory organs on fore‐ and middle legs.  相似文献

We provide the first faunal report for the early/middle Miocene fauna of Cerdas, Bolivia (16.5–15.3 Ma; 20° 52′ S, 66° 19′ W), based primarily on new specimens collected in 2007. As many as twelve species of mammals in nine families are represented. Notoungulates include Palyeidodon obtusum (Toxodontidae), Protypotherium cf. attenuatum and Protypotherium sp. nov. (Interatheriidae), ‘Plesiotypotherium’ minus and possibly Microtypotherium choquecotense (Mesotheriidae), and Hegetotherium? sp. nov. (Hegetotheriidae). Xenarthrans include Stenotatus planus and Prozaedyus sp. (Cingulata: Dasypodidae), Peltephilidae gen. et sp. nov. (Cingulata), and Xyophorus cf. bondesioi (Pilosa: Nothrotheriidae). A new species of litoptern is also present (Macraucheniidae) as well as an unidentified rodent (Chinchillidae: Lagostominae). Two of these Cerdas species occur in Friasian sensu stricto/Colloncuran SALMA faunas of Patagonia, and perhaps one in Santacrucian SALMA faunas. Among middle latitude localities, Cerdas resembles Chucal, Chile (late early Miocene, Santacrucian SALMA) in community composition (e.g., abundant mesotheriids, few rodent species), but has no species in common; it shares one species with Quebrada Honda, Bolivia (middle Miocene, Laventan SALMA), and perhaps as many as three more. These observations indicate that Cerdas is not referable to the Santacrucian, and that the upper limit of this SALMA in the middle latitudes falls somewhere between 17.5 Ma (the top of Chucal) and 16.5 Ma (the base of Cerdas). Based on the range of dates proposed for the youngest Santacrucian intervals in Patagonia, a diachronous offset of up to 2.1 Ma may exist at this point in the SALMA sequence between middle and high latitude faunas.  相似文献

Having successfully obtained new CCK(1) ligands holding appropriate groups on the anthranilic acid dimer used as molecular scaffold we were interested in increasing their micromolar affinity for the CCK(1) receptors by modifying the spatial relationship of the main pharmacophoric groups. Since, we have proposed simplified analogues reducing the anthranilic acid dimer to a monomer. In this stage of our research program we have prepared and tested on CCK receptors a series of N-substituted anthranilic acid derivatives keeping a Phe residue at the C-terminal site. The indole-2-carbonyl group imparts the best CCK(1) receptor binding affinity (compound 1: IC(50)=197.5 nM) while a sharp decrease in binding affinity is observed for the other indole containing derivatives. Moreover, in order to support the different binding behaviour observed for the synthesized compounds, a conformational investigation was carried out. Finally, on the basis of the main pharmacophoric groups of the obtained new lead compound (1) (coded VL-0395) a receptor binding hypothesis has been provided.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of ischemia on low-threshold motor unit conduction velocity. Nine subjects were trained to isolate the activity of a single motor unit (target motor unit) in the abductor pollicis brevis muscle with feedback on surface EMG signals recorded with a 16-electrode linear array. After training, the subjects activated the target motor unit at approximately 8 pulses per second (pps) for five 3-min-long contractions. During the third and fourth contractions, a cuff inflated at 180 mmHg around the forearm induced ischemia of the hand. The exerted force (mean +/- SE, 4.6 +/- 2.1% of the maximal voluntary contraction force), discharge rate (8.6 +/- 0.4 pps), interpulse interval variability (34.8 +/- 2.5%), and peak-to-peak amplitude of the target motor unit action potentials (176.6 +/- 18.2 microV) were not different among the five contractions. Conduction velocity, mean power spectral frequency, and action potential duration were the same in the beginning of the five contractions (2.8 +/- 0.2 m/s, 195.2 +/- 10.5 Hz, and 5.4 +/- 0.3 ms, respectively) and changed over the 3 min of sustained activation only during the fourth contraction. Conduction velocity and mean power spectral frequency decreased (10.05 +/- 1.8% and 8.50 +/- 2.18% during the 3 min, respectively) and action potential duration increased (8.2 +/- 4.6% in the 3 min) during the fourth contraction. In conclusion, 1) subjects were able to isolate the activity of a single motor unit with surface EMG visual feedback in ischemic conditions maintained for 16 min, and 2) the activation-induced decrease in single motor unit conduction velocity was significantly larger with ischemia than with normal circulation, probably due to the alteration of mechanisms of ion exchange across the fiber membrane.  相似文献

In situ bioremediation of industrial chlorinated solvents, such as trichloroethene (TCE), is typically accomplished by providing an organic electron donor to naturally occurring dechlorinating populations. In the present study, we show that TCE dechlorinating bacteria can access the electrons required for TCE dechlorination directly from a negatively polarized (?450 mV vs. SHE) carbon paper electrode. In replicated batch experiments, a mixed dechlorinating culture, also containing Dehalococcoides spp., dechlorinated TCE to cis‐dichloroethene (cis‐DCE) and lower amounts of vinyl chloride (VC) and ethene using the polarized electrode as the sole electron donor. Conversely, neither VC nor ethene formation occurred when a pure culture of the electro‐active microorganism Geobacter lovleyi was used, under identical experimental conditions. Cyclic voltammetry tests, carried out on the filter‐sterilized supernatant of the mixed culture revealed the presence of a self‐produced redox mediator, exhibiting a midpoint potential of around ?400 mV (vs. SHE). This yet unidentified redox‐active molecule appeared to be involved in the extracellular electron transfer from the electrode to the dechlorinating bacteria. The ability of dechlorinating bacteria to use electrodes as electron donors opens new perspectives for the development of clean, versatile, and efficient bioremediation systems based on a controlled subsurface delivery of electrons in support of biodegradative metabolisms and provides further evidence on the possibility of using conductive materials to manipulate and control a range of microbial bioprocesses.
