Improvement of degraded physical properties of a saline-sodic soil by reclamation with kallar grass (Leptochloa fusca) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of growing salt tolerant plants to improve the physical characteristics of a saline-sodic soil. Kallar grass [Leptochloa fusca (L.) Kunth], a species tolerant to salinity, sodicity and alkalinity, was irrigated for five years with poor quality ground water (EC = 0.14 S m–1, SARadj=19.3, RSC = 9.7 meq L–1). The soil physical properties of plant available water, saturated hydraulic conductivity, structural stability, bulk density and porosity were determined at the end of each year. The growth of kallar grass for three years significantly improved the physical properties of the soil and these were maintained with further growth of grass up to five years. Kallar grass significantly increased plant available water with time (r=0.97**). The available water was highly correlated (r=0.92**) with increases in soil organic matter content, porosity (r=0.99**) and other physical properties. Soil hydraulic conductivity increased substantially with time from 0.035 to 55.6 mm d–1 in the topsoil (0–20 cm) in five years and was significantly correlated with porosity, water retention, structural stability and organic matter content of soil. The soil structural stability index improved significantly from 32 to 151 with kallar grass and showed greater increases in the surface soil than at depth. The cropping of kallar grass resulted in a linear increase of soil organic matter content (r=0.92**) which improved porosity and other soil physical properties (r0.82*). This study confirmed that kallar grass is effective for rehabilitation and restoration of soil fertility in saline-sodic areas on a sustainable basis. 相似文献

Spindle poisons represent an important class of anticancer drugs that act by interfering with microtubule polymerization and dynamics and thereby induce mitotic checkpoints and apoptosis. Here we show that mammalian SNM1 functions in an early mitotic stress checkpoint that is distinct from the well-characterized spindle checkpoint that regulates the metaphase-to-anaphase transition. Specifically, we found that compared to wild-type cells, Snm1-deficient mouse embryonic fibroblasts exposed to spindle poisons exhibited elevated levels of micronucleus formation, decreased mitotic delay, a failure to arrest in mitosis prior to chromosome condensation, supernumerary centrosomes, and decreased viability. In addition, we show that both Snm1 and 53BP1, previously shown to interact, coimmunoprecipitate with components of the anaphase-promoting complex (APC)/cyclosome. These findings suggest that Snm1 is a component of a mitotic stress checkpoint that negatively targets the APC prior to chromosome condensation. 相似文献

This study assessed mouse strain-related differences in vertebral biomechanics and histomorphometry in inbred mice strains shown to differ in bone mineral content (BMC) and areal density (BMD) (as measured by pDEXA). Lumbar vertebrae L3 to L5 were collected from three mice strains (C3H/HeJ[C3], C57BL/6J[B6], and DBA/2J[D2], n=12/strain, 4-month-old female, 22.2 +/- 0.3g). BMC and BMD were measured in L3 and L4 using peripheral dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. The L4 vertebral body was then mechanically tested in compression to determine structural properties (ultimate/yield load, stiffness) from load-displacement curves and derive apparent material properties (ultimate/yield stress, and modulus of elasticity). L5 was processed for histomorphometric evaluation. Vertebral BMC and BMD were greater in C3 than in B6 and D2 mice. Vertebral trabecular/cancellous bone volume was smaller in C3 than in D2 and B6 mice. Trabecular bone formation rates were greater in D2 than in B6 and C3 mice. Osteoid surface was smaller in C3 mice than in B6 and D2 mice. Differences in osteoclast and mineralizing surfaces were not detected among the three mouse strains. In addition, there were no significant differences in biomechanical properties between the three strains. Despite the greatest BMC and areal BMD in C3 mice, the lack of strain-related differences in vertebral body strength data suggests that the biomechanical properties may be affected by the bone distribution and/or complex combination of cortical and cancellous bone at this site. 相似文献

Microphthalmia is an important developmental eye disorder. Although mutations in several genes have been linked to this condition, they only account for a minority of cases. We performed autozygome analysis and exome sequencing on a multiplex consanguineous family in which colobomatous microphthalmia is associated with profound global developmental delay, intractable seizures, and corpus callosum abnormalities, and we identified a homozygous truncating mutation in C12orf57 [c.1A>G; p.Met1?]. In a simplex case with a similar phenotype, we identified compound heterozygosity for the same mutation and another missense mutation [c.152T>A; p.Leu51Gln]. Little is known about C12orf57 but we show that it is expressed in several mouse tissues, including the eye and brain. Our data strongly implicate mutations in C12orf57 in the pathogenesis of a clinically distinct autosomal-recessive syndromic form of colobomatous microphthalmia. 相似文献

The Punjab Urial (Ovis vignei punjabiensis) is an endangered subspecie of ovidae, distributed as small scattered populations in the forest belt of the Himalayan foothills of Pakistan and in the areas enclosed by the Indus and the Jhelum rivers. The present study was conducted to evaluate the liquid storage of Punjab Urial spermatozoa in different extenders for use in future in situ conservation activities. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation from three captive Punjab Urial rams. Suitable ejaculates of individual animals were pooled and divided into three aliquots for dilution with the experimental extenders (Tris–citric acid, skim milk and sodium citrate) at 37 °C. Extended semen was cooled from 37 °C to 5 °C in 2 h, and stored for three days at 5 °C. Sperm motility (%), viability (%; live/dead), acrosome integrity (%) and plasma membrane integrity (%) were assessed on days 1, 2 and 3 of storage. On day 1, sperm motility, viability as well as acrosome and plasma membrane integrity were similar (p > 0.05) in all three experimental extenders. On day 2, sperm motility, viability, acrosome and plasma membrane integrity were higher (p < 0.05) in Tris–citric acid extender compared to sodium citrate based extender. On day 3 of storage, the values of motility, viability and acrosome integrity were higher (p < 0.05) in Tris–citric acid extender than in skim milk and sodium citrate based extenders. In conclusion, Tris–citric acid extender appears to be a better option compared with skim milk and sodium citrate extenders for liquid storage of Punjab Urial semen. 相似文献

Combined nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide [nano (ZnO–TiO2)] has been reported first time for the synthesis of novel series of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-6-((5-substituted-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)methyl)thieno[2,3-c]pyridine. All the synthesized compounds (7a–7m) are novel and were screened for their antimicrobial activity against four different strains like Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and antifungal activity was determined against two strains Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. SAR for the newly synthesised derivatives has been developed by comparing their MIC values with ampicillin, ciprofloxacin and miconazole for antibacterial and antifungal activities, respectively. Among the synthesized compounds, 2,6 dichlorophenyl analogue (7f), 4 fluorophenyl analogue (7k) and 2,6 dichlorophenyl analogue (7l) shows promising antibacterial as well as antifungal activity whereas thiophene substituted compound (7j) shows promising antibacterial activity. 相似文献

Described herein is the development of a potent non-nucleoside, small molecule inhibitor of genotype 1 HCV NS5B Polymerase. A 23 μM inhibitor that was active against HCV polymerase was further elaborated into a potent single-digit nanomolar inhibitor of HCV NS5B polymerase by additional manipulation of the R and R1 substituents. Aims
To determine serum zinc level and other relevant biological markers in normal, prediabetic and diabetic individuals and their association with Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) parameters.Methods
This cross-sectional study was conducted between March and December 2009. Any patient aged ≥30 years attending the medicine outpatient department of a medical university hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh and who had a blood glucose level ordered by a physician was eligible to participate.Results
A total of 280 participants were analysed. On fasting blood sugar results, 51% were normal, 13% had prediabetes and 36% had diabetes. Mean serum zinc level was lowest in prediabetic compared to normal and diabetic participants (mean differences were approximately 65 ppb/L and 33 ppb/L, respectively). In multiple linear regression, serum zinc level was found to be significantly lower in prediabetes than in those with normoglycemia. Beta cell function was significantly lower in prediabetes than normal participants. Adjusted linear regression for HOMA parameters did not show a statistically significant association between serum zinc level, beta cell function (P = 0.07) and insulin resistance (P = 0.08). Low serum zinc accentuated the increase in insulin resistance seen with increasing BMI.Conclusion
Participants with prediabetes have lower zinc levels than controls and zinc is significantly associated with beta cell function and insulin resistance. Further longitudinal population based studies are warranted and controlled trials would be valuable for establishing whether zinc supplementation in prediabetes could be a useful strategy in preventing progression to Type 2 diabetes. 相似文献270.

After packaging of DNA into the head of bacteriophage T4 is completed, a neck is formed at the portal vertex of the head to be ready for the tail attachment. The main components of the neck are gp13 and gp14 (gp: gene product), which consist of 309 and 256 amino acid residues, respectively. In order to elucidate the structure and subunit arrangement in the neck, overexpression systems of gene 13 and gene 14 were constructed and purified to homogeneity. Far-UV circular dichroism (CD) spectra of gp13 and gp14 indicated that gp13 is rich in alpha-helices whereas gp14 is rich in beta-sheets. Sedimentation velocity analysis of gp13 and gp14 revealed that both proteins are present as monomers in solution. The frictional ratios (f/f(0)) of the two proteins indicated that gp14 has a more elongated shape than gp13. Although isolated gp13 and gp14 do not interact with each other when mixed under physiological conditions, they form a hetero-oligomer complex with the stoichiometry of 10:5 after treatment with ammonium sulfate. Electron microscopy of this complex has shown that it forms a ring-like structure of 15 nm in diameter. 相似文献
