Purpose
The aim of this study is to develop and test the applicability of a new subcategory assessment method (SAM) for social life cycle assessment using a case study on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) production by Dow Chemical Canada facility in Alberta, Canada. Methods
The methodology is characterized by six steps: (1) definition of the goal and scope of the assessment; (2) life cycle inventory data collection including context data at country level and company-specific data for foreground processes; (3) impact assessment where the subcategories’ results for foreground processes at company level are evaluated using a new SAM developed and the country social performance in the different subcategories is evaluated using some assessment intervals; (4) comparing the social performance of foreground processes to the social background context in sector or country; (5) evaluating the social performance of background processes using sector performance evaluation from Product Social Impact Life Cycle Assessment (PSILCA) database or country performance evaluation conducted in the study; (6) and discussion and conclusion. Results and discussion
The method developed was able to identify the subcategories that need high level or some level of improvements along the cradle-to-gate life cycle of HDPE. In addition, the stakeholders with high negative effect were highlighted in every life cycle stage. Through this approach, Dow Chemical Canada is able to prioritize its actions and focus on the areas where its performance is still low compared to its peers in the sector or compared to the situation in the country. Moreover, through using PSILCA database or country performance evaluation to investigate the social performance of background processes, Dow Chemical Canada can determine the social hotspots areas that need more focus from its suppliers. Conclusions
Applying the new subcategory assessment approach proposed in this study provides an objective way to assess the subcategories while differentiating between two levels of assessment: (1) the commitment to the social subcategory in the company’s policy (defined as cutoff requirement) and (2) the evidence of good/bad practices of the subcategory. In addition, the comparison of performance of the companies in foreground processes to the social background in sector or country has improved the objectivity further.42.

The first part of this study evaluated contents of hydrolysable tannins (HT) and condensed tannins (CT) of 65 accessions of tagasaste. In the second part, the effects of harvesting stage and growing season on the contents of HT, CT and alkaloids in different plant parts of the widely grown tagasaste variety ‘MOA’ was studied in a randomized complete block design. Regrowths of tagasaste was harvested in one experiment at 4, 6, 8 and 10 months, separated into growing buds, leaves, barks, branches and stems and in another trial at 6 months regrowth during the main rainy, dry and short rainy seasons. The leaves of different tagasaste accessions contained on average 115 g/kg dry matter (DM) HT in a range of 16–197 and 12.5 abs/g NDF CT in a range of 6.9–35.0 abs/g NDF. The edible fractions (growing buds and leaves) were higher in HT and CT contents compared to the structural parts (stems and barks). The leaf fraction contained higher HT and CT (177.2 g/kg DM and 20.1 abs/g NDF) and the HT tended to decline with progressing harvesting stages. High concentration of alkaloids was found in the non-edible fractions, with the highest content in the bark (235 mg/kg) and the lowest in the leaf (40 mg/kg DM) fractions. These levels increased in the fractions from the 4th to the 8th month of harvesting stage and then declined at the 10th month. About 90% of the alkaloids found in tagasaste were sparteine. Higher concentration of HT was found in tagasaste leaves, harvested during the rainy season compared to the dry season. The concentration of CT was low during the main rainy season, while the highest was during the short rainy and dry seasons. Contents of HT and CT were positively correlated (r = 0.25, P<0.01). However, both the HT and CT contents had negative correlation coefficient of r = −0.43 (P<0.001) and r = −0.73 (P<0.001) with alkaloids, respectively. The results of this study showed that varietal selection, and harvesting management could be used as a means to modulate the level of tannins and alkaloids in tagasaste. 相似文献

Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor-deficient (IP3RKO) B-lymphocytes were used to investigate the functional relevance of type 1 inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R1) and its cleavage by caspase-3 in apoptosis. We showed that inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor-deficient cells were largely resistant to apoptosis induced by both staurosporine (STS) and B-cell receptor (BCR) stimulation. Expression of either the wild-type IP3R1 or an N-terminal deletion mutant (Delta1-225) that lacks inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate-induced Ca2+ release activity restored sensitivity to apoptosis and the consequent rise in free cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i). Expression of caspase-3-non-cleavable mutant receptor, however, dramatically slowed down the rate of apoptosis and prevented both Ca2+ overload and secondary necrosis. Conversely, expression of the "channel-only" domain of IP3R1, a fragment of the receptor generated by caspase-3 cleavage, strongly increased the propensity of the cells to undergo apoptosis. In agreement with these observations, caspase inhibitors impeded apoptosis and the associated rise in [Ca2+]i. Both the staurosporine- and B-cell receptor-induced apoptosis and increase in [Ca2+]i could be induced in nominally Ca2+-free and serum-free culture media, suggesting that the apoptosis-related rise in [Ca2+]i was primarily because of the release from internal stores rather than of influx through the plasma membrane. Altogether, our results suggest that IP3R1 plays a pivotal role in apoptosis and that the increase in [Ca2+]i during apoptosis is mainly the consequence of IP3R1 cleavage by caspase-3. These observations also indicate that expression of a functional IP3R1 per se is not enough to generate the significant levels of cytosolic Ca2+ needed for the rapid execution of apoptosis, but a prior activation of caspase-3 and the resulting truncation of the IP3R1 are required. 相似文献

Incursion of water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, has been a potential threat to Lake Tana and its ecosystem services. Its expansion is currently managed by abstraction (removing by hand); nonetheless, the disposal of mats and formation of pools are remaining problematic. This study aimed to assess the potential effects of water hyacinth and its management on water quality and human health. Biotic and abiotic data were collected on open water, water hyacinth covered and water hyacinth cleared out habitats. A total of 3673 invertebrates belonging to twenty-one families were collected from 45 sites. Culicidae was the most abundant family accounting (37.2%), followed by Unionoidae (19.4%) and Sphaeriidae (8.1%). Abundance of anopheline and culicine larvae were significantly higher in water hyacinth cleared out habitats (p?<?0.05). Water conductivity and total dissolved solids were significantly higher in habitats covered with water hyacinth (p?<?0.05). In conclusion, water hyacinth infestation had a negative impact on water quality and biotic communities. The physical abstraction of water hyacinth provided a very good habitat for the proliferation of mosquito larvae. Therefore, integrating water hyacinth management practices along with mosquito larvae control strategy could help to abate the potential risk of malaria outbreak in the region. In addition, developing watershed scale nutrient management systems could have a vital contribution for managing water hyacinth invasion in the study area. 相似文献

Fine root turnover of trees is a major C input to soil. However, the quality of litter input is influenced by root morphological traits and tissue chemical composition. In this study, fine roots of ten tropical woody species were collected from an Afromontane forest in the northern highlands of Ethiopia. The fine roots were analysed for root morphological traits and tissue chemistry measured as proxy carbon fractionations. Based on stem increment, the 10 species were divided into faster- and slower-growing species. Faster-growing species exhibited higher specific root length (1362 cm g?1) than slower-growing species (923 cm g?1). Similarly specific root area was higher in faster-growing species (223 cm2 g?1) than in slower-growing species (167 cm2 g?1). Among the carbon fractions, the acid-insoluble fraction (AIF) was the highest (44–51%). The carbon content, AIF, and the lignocellulose index were higher for slower-growing species. Root tissue density was lower in faster-growing species (0.33 g cm?3) than slower-growing species (0.40 g cm?3) and showed a strong positive correlation with carbon content (r 2 = 0.84) and the AIF (r pearson = 0.93). The morphological traits of fine roots between faster- and slower-growing species reflect the ecological strategy they employ. Slower-growing species have a higher tissue density which may reflect a greater longevity. 相似文献

Background
Eating disorders are very complex, frequently developed and have a public health impact on adolescents. Different studies revealed that eating disorders is a pressing public health problem among adolescents. Eating disorders may also lead to mortality due to their physiological sequelae. There is no previous study regarding disordered of eating attitude in Ethiopian adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to assess prevalence of disordered eating attitude and its associated factors among adolescents in Addis Ababa high schools. Methods
A school-based cross sectional study was conducted. Data were collected among 836 high school adolescents aged 12–19 years from May to June, 2015 in Addis Ababa city. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire containing eating attitudes test-26 items (EAT-26) and socio-demographic factors. Binary logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify factors associated with disordered eating attitude. Both crude odds ratio and adjusted odds ratio were calculated to show the strength of association. In multivariable analysis, variables with a P value of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results
The prevalence of disordered eating attitude among adolescents was 8.6% [95% CI 4.9, 12.3]. Being female [AOR = 1.75, 95% CI 1.03, 3.00], Mother’s educational status (Primary [AOR = 0.28, 95% CI 0.11, 0.78], Certificate/diploma [AOR = 0.22, 95% CI 0.07, 0.58] and first degree and above [AOR = 0.16, 95% CI 0.07, 0.40]) were found to be significantly associated with disordered eating attitude.Conclusion
The finding of this study revealed that a significant number of adolescents were susceptible to developing disordered eating attitude. Being female and Mothers’ education status were significantly associated with disordered eating attitude among adolescents. Provision of screening test for eating disorders focusing on female adolescents is highly recommended.48.

Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & H.E. Robins. (Asteraceae) threatens several economic and environmental activities in the eastern subtropical regions of South Africa and is a target for biological control. Three populations of Pareuchaetes insulata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) originating from Florida (USA), Cuba and Jamaica were released at 30 separate sites in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Subsequent overlapping of two of these populations in the field and the likelihood of interbreeding posed a potential risk of establishment failure. To explore the genetic diversity of the different P. insulata populations and test for the existence of pre- and post-zygotic reproductive isolation between them, molecular analyses and cross-mating experiments were conducted. Mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed significant genetic similarity between them. Cross-mating trials between Floridian and Jamaican populations of P. insulata revealed no significant pre- and post-zygotic isolation, with no demonstrable differences in measured parameters between the ‘parental’ populations, the F1 ‘hybrids’ and the backcrosses. These results suggest that P. insulata populations released in South Africa are part of the same ‘parental’ population. Genetic incompatibility is, therefore, relatively unlikely to be the cause of any failure in establishment of P. insulata at any of the release sites. 相似文献

The functional regulation of integrins is a major determinant of cell adhesion, migration and tissue maintenance. The binding of cytoskeletal proteins to various sites of integrin cytoplasmic domains is a key mechanism of this functional regulation. Expression of recombinant integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3) and alpha(M)beta(2) lacking the GFFKR-region in CHO cells results in constitutively activated integrins. In contrast, CHO cells stably expressing either a GFFKR-deleted alpha(V(del))beta(3) or a FF to AA-substituted alpha(V(AA))beta(3) do not reveal a constitutively activated integrin. Adhesion to immobilized fibrinogen is strongly impaired in alpha(V(del))beta(3) or alpha(V(AA))beta(3)-expressing cells, whereas it is not impaired in alpha(IIb)beta(3) and alpha(M)beta(2), both lacking the GFFKR-region. In a parallel plate flow chamber assay, alpha(V)beta(3)-expressing cells adhere firmly to fibrinogen and spread even at shear rates of 15 to 20 dyn/cm(2), whereas alpha(V(del))beta(3) or alpha(V(AA))beta(3) cells are detached at 15 dyn/cm(2). Actin stress fiber formation and focal adhesion plaques containing alpha(V)beta(3) are observed in alpha(V)beta(3) cells but not in alpha(V(del))beta(3) or alpha(V(AA))beta(3)-expressing cells. As an additional manifestation of impaired outside-in signaling, phosphorylation of pp125(FAK) was reduced in these cells. In summary, we report that the GFFKR-region of the alpha(V)-cytoplasmic domain and in particular two phenylalanines are essential for integrin alpha(V)beta(3) function, especially for outside-in signaling. Our results suggest that the two beta(3)-integrins alpha(IIb)beta(3) and alpha(V)beta(3) are differentially regulated via their GFFKR-region. 相似文献
