Cricket frogs (Acris crepitans) occupy a variety of acousticallydifferent habitats ranging from pine forest to open grassland.There is geographic variation in their calls and the tuningof their basilar papilla (BP) correlated with habitat. Here,we characterize the spectral content of environmental noisefrom two habitats, one a pine forest (Stengl) and one a grassland(Gill) habitat. We then used rounded exponential filter functionsbased on the mean tuning of auditory fibers in Stengl and Gillfemales to model the BP tuning characteristics of an averagefemale from the two cricket frog populations occupying thosehabitats to compare their ability to filter out environmentalnoise. Noise recordings were made at both sites from 1800 to2400 h on multiple nights throughout a breeding season (Marchthrough early August). Noise spectra were similar at both sites.Cross-correlation analyses of the sampled noise indicated thatnoise spectra were consistent throughout the night and variedlittle over the season other than during the month of May. Themodel auditory filter simulating an average Stengl female wassignificantly better than one simulating an average Gill femaleat filtering environmental noise at both sites. Previous workhad shown that cricket frog calls suffered greater attenuationand degradation in the Stengl site than the Gill site but thatthe male calls from Stengl frogs suffered less attenuation andless degradation than Gill calls during transmission throughboth habitats. These new results demonstrate that frogs fromthe more acoustically challenging Stengl habitat have enhancedboth the sender and receiver portions of their communicationsystem, evolving calls that transmit better and auditory filtersthat better eliminate noise.  相似文献

Given the growing wealth of downstream information, the integration of molecular and non-molecular data on a given organism has become a major challenge. For micro-organisms, this information now includes a growing collection of sequenced genes and complete genomes, and for communities of organisms it includes metagenomes. Integration of the data is facilitated by the existence of authoritative, community-recognized, consensus identifiers that may form the heart of so-called information knuckles. The Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) is building a mapping of identifiers across a group of federated databases with the aim to improve navigation across these resources and to enable the integration of their information in the near future. In particular, this is possible because of the existence of INSDC Genome Project Identifiers (GPIDs) and accession numbers, and the ability of the community to define new consensus identifiers such as the culture identifiers used in the StrainInfo.net bioportal. Here we outline (1) the general design of the Genomic Rosetta Stone project, (2) introduce example linkages between key databases (that cover information about genomes, 16S rRNA gene sequences, and microbial biological resource centers), and (3) make an open call for participation in this project providing a vision for its future use.  相似文献

Insect mushroom bodies, best known for their role in olfactory processing, also receive sensory input from other modalities. In crickets and grasshoppers, a tritocerebral tract containing afferents from palp mechanosensory and gustatory centers innervates the accessory calyx. The accessory calyx is uniquely composed of Class III Kenyon cells, and was shown by immunohistochemistry to be present sporadically across several insect orders. Neuronal tracers applied to the source of tritocerebral tract axons in several species of insects demonstrated that tritocerebral tract innervation of the mushroom bodies targeted the accessory calyx when present, the primary calyces when an accessory calyx was not present, or both. These results suggest that tritocerebral tract input to the mushroom bodies is likely ubiquitous, reflecting the importance of gustation for insect behavior. The scattered phylogenetic distribution of Class III Kenyon cells is also proposed to represent an example of generative homology, in which the developmental program for forming a structure is retained in all members of a lineage, but the program is not "run" in all branches.  相似文献

Previous studies indicated that inputs from the Clinch River Plant (CRP), a coal-burning, power-generating facility in Carbo, Virginia, caused impairment to transplanted freshwater mussels. These findings necessitated the examination of instream biological responses to CRP effluents. Therefore, our objective was to derive a site-specific Criterion Maximum Concentration (CMC) for copper (Cu), the toxic constituent of the effluent. This was accomplished by conducting acute toxicity tests with Cu using 17 different genera native to or currently residing in the Clinch River watershed. Four native unionids and a mayfly (Isonychia bicolor) had genus mean acute values of 60?µJ.g/L or lower (ranging from 37 to 60?µJ,g/L). With a GMAV of 88?µJ,g/L, Ceriodaphnia dubia ranked sixth among the 17 genera tested, and the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, ranked fourteenth with a GMAV of 310?µJ.g/L. Despite the sensitivity of the indigenous mussels tested, the site-specific CMC of 18?µJg/L was not substantially lower than the national CMC for Cu (20?µJ,g/L, hardness = 150?mg/L as CaCO3). While we conducted acute exposure tests, future investigations should incorporate both biomarker and population or community-level studies to determine low-level contaminant impacts on freshwater mussels.  相似文献

The effectiveness of using a mixture of the chiral selectors vancomycin and ristocetin A to achieve chiral recognition was examined in this study. The results of using the mixed chiral selector vancomycin and ristocetin A in capillary electrophoresis were compared with the results of using each chiral selector alone. Chiral separations were carried out using a coated capillary column to suppress electroosmotic flow and minimize interactions with the capillary wall. We employed a countercurrent process where the solute reaches the detection cell window after the chiral selector has cleared the window, minimizing the background absorbance from the chiral selector and improving sensitivity. Using a mixture of vancomycin and ristocetin A, separations were achieved which often exceeded the resolving power of either chiral selector when used alone. The effect of voltage on resolution was also studied, and the optimal voltage was found to be between -5 and -8 kV.  相似文献

We investigated the consequences of altering the form and valence of defined autodeterminants on the initiation and spreading of experimentally induced La/Ro autoimmunity. Anti-La and Ro (SS-A) Ab responses were monitored following immunization of healthy mice with defined immunodominant and subdominant T cell determinants of the La (SS-B) autoantigen synthesized as either monomeric or multiple antigenic (MAP) peptides. Abs to mouse La (mLa) developed faster and were of higher titer in mice immunized with the subdominant mLa25-44 MAP compared with mice immunized with the 25-44 monomer. Rapid intermolecular spreading of the autoimmune response to 60-kDa Ro was observed in AKR/J mice immunized with mLa25-44 MAP, but not in mice immunized repeatedly with monomeric peptide. A/J mice immunized and boosted with the known tolerogenic mLa287-301 determinant delivered as monomeric peptide failed to develop Abs to either intact mLa or mLa287-301 peptide. However, immunization with the multivalent mLa287-301 peptide led to the rapid production of high titer mLa autoantibodies associated with a proliferative T cell response to the mLa287-301 peptide. The data suggested that the enhanced immunogenicity of MAPs was not due to augmented Ag presentation or T cell stimulation. However, MAP-, but not monomer peptide-, containing immune complexes were potent substrates for Ab-dependent fixation of complement. These results demonstrate that the form of Ag responsible for inducing autoimmunity can profoundly influence the nature and magnitude of the immune response. Thus, molecular mimicry of tolerogenic and nontolerogenic self determinants might trigger autoimmunity under conditions of altered valence.  相似文献

The insect mushroom bodies are prominent higher order neuropils consisting of thousands of approximately parallel projecting intrinsic neurons arising from the minute basophilic perikarya of globuli cells. Early studies described these structures as centers for intelligence and other higher functions; at present, the mushroom bodies are regarded as important models for the neural basis of learning and memory. The insect mushroom bodies share a similar general morphology, and the same basic sequence of developmental events is observed across a wide range of insect taxa. Globuli cell progenitors arise in the embryo and proliferate throughout the greater part of juvenile development. Discrete morphological and functional subpopulations of globuli cells (or Kenyon cells, as they are called in insects) are sequentially produced at distinct periods of development. Kenyon cell somata are arranged by age around the center of proliferation, as are their processes in the mushroom body neuropil. Other aspects of mushroom body development are more variable from species to species, such as the origin of specific Kenyon cell populations and neuropil substructures, as well as the timing and pace of the general developmental sequence.  相似文献
