Isodar theory can be used to evaluate fitness consequences of density-dependent habitat selection by animals. A typical habitat isodar is a regression curve plotting competitor densities in two adjacent habitats when individual fitness is equal. Despite the increasing use of habitat isodars, their application remains largely limited to areas composed of pairs of adjacent habitats that are defined a priori. We developed a resampling method that uses data from wildlife surveys to build isodars in heterogeneous landscapes without having to predefine habitat types. The method consists in randomly placing blocks over the survey area and dividing those blocks in two adjacent sub-blocks of the same size. Animal abundance is then estimated within the two sub-blocks. This process is done 100 times. Different functional forms of isodars can be investigated by relating animal abundance and differences in habitat features between sub-blocks. We applied this method to abundance data of raccoons and striped skunks, two of the main hosts of rabies virus in North America. Habitat selection by raccoons and striped skunks depended on both conspecific abundance and the difference in landscape composition and structure between sub-blocks. When conspecific abundance was low, raccoons and striped skunks favored areas with relatively high proportions of forests and anthropogenic features, respectively. Under high conspecific abundance, however, both species preferred areas with rather large corn-forest edge densities and corn field proportions. Based on random sampling techniques, we provide a robust method that is applicable to a broad range of species, including medium- to large-sized mammals with high mobility. The method is sufficiently flexible to incorporate multiple environmental covariates that can reflect key requirements of the focal species. We thus illustrate how isodar theory can be used with wildlife surveys to assess density-dependent habitat selection over large geographic extents.  相似文献

Decomposing variation in population growth into contributions from both ecological and evolutionary processes is of fundamental concern, particularly in a world characterized by rapid responses to anthropogenic threats. Although the impact of ecological change on evolutionary response has long been acknowledged, the converse has predominantly been neglected, especially empirically. By applying a recently published conceptual framework, we assess and contrast the relative importance of phenotypic and environmental variability on annual population growth in five ungulate populations. In four of the five populations, the contribution of phenotypic variability was greater than the contribution of environmental variability, although not significantly so. The similarity in the contributions of environment and phenotype suggests that neither is worthy of neglect. Population growth is a consequence of multiple processes, which strengthens arguments advocating integrated approaches to assess how populations respond to their environments.  相似文献

The development of male secondary sexual characters such as antlers or horns has substantial biological and socio‐economic importance because in many species these traits affect male fitness positively through sexual selection and negatively through trophy hunting. Both environmental conditions and selective hunting can affect horn growth but their relative importance remains unexplored. We first examined how a large‐scale climate index, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), local weather and population density influenced both absolute and relative annual horn growth from birth to three years of male bighorn sheep Ovis canadensis over 42 years. We then examined the relative influence of environmental conditions and evolution mainly driven by trophy hunting on male horn length at three years of age. Horn growth was positively influenced by low population density and warm spring temperature, suggesting that ongoing climate change should lead to larger horns. Seasonal values of PDO were highly correlated. Horn growth increased with PDO in spring or summer at low density, but was weak at high density regardless of PDO. The interaction between population density and PDO in spring or summer accounted for a similar proportion of the observed annual variation in horn growth (32% or 37%) as did the additive effects of spring temperature and density (34%). When environmental conditions deteriorated, males allocated relatively more resources to summer mass gain than to horn growth, suggesting a conservative strategy favoring maintenance of condition over allocation to secondary sexual characters. Population density explained 27% of the variation in horn length, while evolutionary effects explained 9% of the variance. Thus, our study underlines the importance of both evolution and phenotypic plasticity on the development of a secondary sexual trait.  相似文献

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in photosynthesis is poorly understood as indicated by a number of studies in this field with often conflicting results. As various NO donors may be the primary source of discrepancies, the aim of this study was to apply a set of NO donors and its scavengers, and examine the effect of exogenous NO on photosynthetic electron transport in vivo as determined by chlorophyll fluorescence of pea (Pisum sativum) leaves. Sodium nitroprusside-induced changes were shown to be mediated partly by cyanide, and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillinamine provided low yields of NO. However, the effects of S-nitrosoglutathione are inferred exclusively by NO, which made it an ideal choice for this study. Q(A)(-) reoxidation kinetics show that NO slows down electron transfer between Q(A) and Q(B), and inhibits charge recombination reactions of Q(A)(-) with the S(2) state of the water-oxidizing complex in photosystem II. Consistent with these results, chlorophyll fluorescence induction suggests that NO also inhibits steady-state photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching processes. NO also appears to modulate reaction-center-associated nonphotochemical quenching.  相似文献

Isolation of multipotent adult stem cells from the dermis of mammalian skin   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We describe here the isolation of stem cells from juvenile and adult rodent skin. These cells derive from the dermis, and clones of individual cells can proliferate and differentiate in culture to produce neurons, glia, smooth muscle cells and adipocytes. Similar precursors that produce neuron-specific proteins upon differentiation can be isolated from adult human scalp. Because these cells (termed SKPs for skin-derived precursors) generate both neural and mesodermal progeny, we propose that they represent a novel multipotent adult stem cell and suggest that skin may provide an accessible, autologous source of stem cells for transplantation.  相似文献

The restriction fragment length polymorphism of the 195 bp repeated DNA sequence of Trypanosoma cruzi was analyzed among 23 T. cruzi stocks giving a reliable picture of the whole phylogenetic variability of the species. The profiles observed with the enzymes Hinf I and Hae III were linked together and supported the existence of two groups. Group 1 shows a 195 bp repeated unit (Hinf I) and high molecular weight DNA (Hae III), while group 2 presents a ladder profile for each enzyme, which is a characteristic of tandemly repeated DNA. The two groups, respectively, clustered stocks pertaining to the two principal lineages evidenced by isoenzyme and RAPD markers. The congruence among these three independent genomic markers corroborates the existence of two real phylogenetic lineages in T. cruzi. The specific monomorphic profiles for each major phylogenetic lineage suggest the existence of ancient sexuality and cryptic biological speciation.  相似文献

In optimizations the dimension of the problem may severely, sometimes exponentially increase optimization time. Parametric function approximatiors (FAPPs) have been suggested to overcome this problem. Here, a novel FAPP, cost component analysis (CCA) is described. In CCA, the search space is resampled according to the Boltzmann distribution generated by the energy landscape. That is, CCA converts the optimization problem to density estimation. Structure of the induced density is searched by independent component analysis (ICA). The advantage of CCA is that each independent ICA component can be optimized separately. In turn, (i) CCA intends to partition the original problem into subproblems and (ii) separating (partitioning) the original optimization problem into subproblems may serve interpretation. Most importantly, (iii) CCA may give rise to high gains in optimization time. Numerical simulations illustrate the working of the algorithm.  相似文献

Eight Trypanosoma cruzi stocks pertaining to the clonal genotypes 19/20, 32, and 39 have been characterized for three experimental parameters of infectivity in Balb/c mice: (i) percentage of mice with a patent parasitemia (% MPP), (ii) maximum parasitemia (MP), and (iii) percentage of mice with positive hemoculture (% MPH). By order of decreasing values, the values recorded for the clonal genotypes ranked as follows: 19/20, 32, and 39, except for the % MPP parameter, for which 19/20 and 32 were not statistically different. The rate of successful reisolation after infection in mice, analyzed by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and random amplified polymorphic DNA typing, was statistically different according to the clonal genotype and was different for uniclonal infections and for mixed infections by two different clonal genotypes. These results confirm that T. cruzi clonal genotypes differ significantly in their infectivity in mice.  相似文献
